Interview with Rigor Sardonicous

1.Hello please introduce yourselves to the readers?

Hi. I’m Joe from the legendary Rigor Sardonicous. Who and what the hell is that, you ask? Read on to find out and click the 4 links below to listen.

2.When did you first discover Metal music? Who were the first bands and artists that you listened to?

The song God Of Thunder by KISS is what we credit as our primary mover into this territory. It was slow, dark, and heavy and we heard it before Black Sabbath. As time went on we learned the heavier and darker the music the more we liked it. At that time there was a lot of oldies, disco, and light rock as some of it came to be known. But then the 80’s came in and bands got better.

3.When did you first discover doom and funeral doom music and what is it about this genre that drew you in? Who are your all-time favorite doom metal bands?

Our region of Long Island can be credited as the styles first true forays as Winter, Sorrow, even Type O Negative are from here. Nearby there was Symphony Of Grief and Incantation. We were not into grooves, though I moshed often at shows and had some scars to show for it, but the mood that came from such dreary, slow, and heavy parts is what called to us. Obituary, Autopsy, Black Sabbath, Confessor, Cathedrals debut album were among the primary initial influences. Tyranny is great and Skepticism is one of the best bands around and I am grateful that nobody has tried to emulate their sound and style.

4.Rigor Sardonicous was started back in 1988 what gave you the idea to start this band? Are you satisfied with how things have gone over the years?

Glenn started the band then and it went on hiatus in 1990 when he joined a death metal band called Abhorrence. I later joined that band and it faltered. In 1992 he decided to put Rigor Sardonicous back together and I joined and we eventually codified our style. We released our demo in 1994 and then 2 albums throughout the decade that we promoted on our own  since we didn’t have money nor a label. We knew we were in a niche genre that was the underground of the underground and we are proud of the fact that we do sound like ourselves and not a clone of other bands.

5.Who would you say are the bands biggest influences and have they remained the same over the years? For the readers who have never heard Rigor Sardonicous how would you best describe the music?

When we started people compared us to Disembowelment but we had not known them nor of Thergothon at the time. We do not sound like Slayer but they have always been one of our favorite bands, though they later sounded like a run-on sentence. Mercyful Fate, Autopsy, Bathory have remained at the core of our favorite bands.

We are known as Funeral Death/Doom but people like to gripe over labels and it has changed during our career based on what others insist on labeling it. Our sound is raw and dense with existential dread. It is mood music and not something you can dance to or find grooves. We think of it as slowed down death metal primarily since our sound is not clean. If one is not comfortable with themselves being still and deeply emotional while feeling rage then we might not be for them. The only way to know is to listen to a song or two and decide and people should do so.

6.Diatriba Deorum is the newest full length how long did it take to write the music for this release? Do you both work on the music together? How long would you say it usually takes to write one song?

Diatriba Deorum, released by Meuse Music Records from Belgium, Remorseless Records from USA, and Lecons des Tenebres Productions from Columbia, is our 8th album and it came together rather quickly. It was completed in 6 months. It was not planned but events occurred that left some strong energies that needed to be focused and thus writing new Rigor Sardonicous music was the easiest thing for me onto grasp onto at that time.

We used to work together a lot at the start of the band but over time we focused on our own simply because life happens.

Usually songs come together somewhat quickly, the opening track Caelum Ardere Vidistis of our previous album Praeparet Bellum was completed in less than 15 minutes. If a song takes too long to build then it might not be worth following through with.

7.Where does the band draw inspiration for the lyrics and what are some subjects written about on the new release?

Life in general provides all the miserable inspiration for what we write about. This latest album Diatriba Deorum subject matter is anti-god. It is not Satanic, Luciferian, nor occultic. It expresses rage felt at human life and since man is said made in gods image then god was the subject of vile contempt and human futility.

8.Has the band ever made a music video for any of your songs? If you had the opportunity to make a video for one song off the new release which song would you like to see made into a music video?

Yes we have 3 videos for the latest album, With God’s Love, Commandment, and Death Cult as well as a few others from prior releases. Check them out on our channel https://www.youtube.com/@demortua.

9.I know the band is a duo but do you ever hire session musicians to do live concerts or do you prefer to work in the studio only?

Initially it was the drummers idea to get Rigor Sardonicous back together but he quickly backed off. We got the Boss DR-660 drum machine to do demos for the songs but since we were stuck without a drummer we determined to move forward with the machine and it soon became integral to our sound.

10.If the band has performed live how was the concert? Are there any shows planned for this year or next?

At first we did do some shows but that was never the overall plan. Glenn hated doing them so after some time I did have a session bassist who used to be with Evoken and we played a few shows. Glenn and I decided to make a live album, Viviscere Exitium, which can be freely downloaded at http://www.smilingdeath.com/RigorSardonicous/media.php and was also released on cassette by Witch Sermon Productions. I used to do sound for free at that place so I asked them to let us play on an off time so we could make the record and we had a fun crowd.

11.When not working on new music what do you like to do in your free time?

I love to hike and get lost in nature though we are true hermits at the same time.

12.Thank you for taking the time to fill this interview out do you have anything that you would like to add?

Thank you for this time to talk to whoever is reading this interview and to you, Patrick, for keeping this zine alive! Please check us out at the links that follow so you can determine for yourselves how much we suck. Take care.

Interview with Abysmal Growls Of Despair

1.Hello   Hangsvart please introduce yourself to the readers?
Hello Patrick, my first name is Aimeric, I was born in France in 1991 and moved to live in the UK in 2020. I am now located in the north east of England. I had a few other solo projects beside AGoD and sang for a few bands. I have been also a singer for hire for a while but I have diminished all of these things to focus on AGoD and now Abysmal Rage and personal things.

2.At what age did you become interested in writing and  performing  music?Who would you say are some of your all-time favorite  musiciaans and influences over the years?
I started playing bass and guitar in 2007. I had been suffering for a few months from schizophrenia and depression. It is really what got me into music and writing poetry. I have discovered metal at the same time but in some very unusual ways. The first bands I discovered were Ataraxie, Funeralium, Remembrance (three French bands of funeral doom), Shape of Despair, Skepticism, Comatose Vigil, Catacombs/Hierophant, SUNN O))), My Shameful, and other similar bands. They have stayed with me all these years. Amenra has been very present as well, but I discovered them a little later, more around 2010. Earth has been very present, some black metal bands such as Gris, Hate Forest, Siebenburgen. Beside metal, I have always listened a lot to dark ambient like Northaunt, dark folk, like Nebelung (which makes me think about Empyrium which I love too), Pop like Pink Floyd and London Grammar, a lot of classical music and film soundtracks, and a lot of traditional songs/bands like Huun Huur Tu. More recently I have been listening to more mainstream metal bands like Cannibal Corpse, Immolation and Behemoth, as I can find their tabs easily and I am now focusing on Abysmal Rage, death doom metal.

3.What  instruments do you  currently play? Are you self taught or did you take lesons when first starting out?
Currently I play 8 string guitars, 5 string bass and the Tsuur, an ancestral vertical flute from Mongolia. I am self taught in everything regarding music, playing, singing, composing, recording, mix/mastering.

4.Are their any instruments that you would like to learn to play one day?
If I had the money and the time, I would love to learn to play many ancestral flutes, musical horns and the carnyx.

5.You also handle the vocals for the band when did you first start growling and singing?Do you  do anything special to keep your throat and voice  healthy?

I started to growl/grunt very early on. I am not a good clean singer, I had taken a few lessons in lyrical singing around 2013/14, I am not sure of the date anymore, but I always felt too disconnected with clean singing to continue. I can only express myself through guttural singing. And now I have mastered 4 very different techniques of guttural singing. The grunt, that you hear in most metal bands, like Cannibal Corpse, Behemoth and such, can be high, mid and low pitch. The growl, that you almost never hear, I am only sure to have heard it in the band Devangelic. But I think some bands of brutal death/grind death and such, use it. It can be mid and ultra low, spoken, whispered or louder than normal speech but it is not as aggressive as grunt which is why it is rarely used. It has been my main type of guttural singing in AGoD. The Kargyraa, which is an ancestral type of singing. It was used all over the world but now can only be heard in Mongolia/Tuva/Siberia, Tibetan Monks, and a few other groups. But bands like Heilung are using it a lot. And what I call guttural harmonics, which is basically a mix between grunt and kargyraa and yet sounds very different, with amazing harmonics. I try to sing everyday, and I often start with kargyraa or guttural harmonics to warm up my voice. But besides that, I do not do anything special.

6.Hangsvart you  started Abysmal Growls Of Despair back in  2013  when did you get  the idea to start this band? How did you choose Abysmal Growls Of Despair  as the name of the band?
Since I started to play bass and guitar I started to compose as well. For one, at the time you could not find tabs of the bands I was listening to. I quickly discovered My Dying Bride and tabs were available of them but it is no funeral doom. I just had to do it, to put down what is in my mind, poetry or music. For the name I wanted something to reflect the despair and the main type of vocals I was using, deep growls. And I thought that the word Abysmal was a good idea as it is conveying many different meanings. Where abyssal has only one, really.

7.I believe you are the sole member of the band have you always  worked alone? Would you like to find more members to do some live shows or do you prefer to work alone?

I much prefer to work alone. I was extremely withdrawn from reality and to be around other people has always been very hard for me, triggering a lot of my symptoms. I need to live away from human interactions, as much as possible to feel well. Before living on my own I was pushed to be normal and have friends and do things with others. I tried. I tried hard and for so long. But every single band I have tried to be part of or to form quickly made my sickness worse and I had to quit. I have been a singer for others but via online/international collaborations, that was fine. But I much prefer working alone. Since living in the UK and having to handle both French and English in my daily life, I was not able to write anymore and that is why I stopped all poetry. However, I was/am very open to use other people's writings if they wished to. Especially when the texts/poems/lyrics are of good quality. Like for Torn, the lyrics were written by Jorg, a wonderful writer. And the first album of Abysmal Rage, soon out with Wormhole Death, is using my companion's poems. I do not want to do any live shows. I had the chance to do some in Toulouse, France, as the singer of a death metal band. The concerts themselves were fun to do, but all the hours before where I had to be among humans were hard.
8.If you  had the opportunity to work with any musicians who would you  like to work with?
If I had the opportunity to work with other musicians it would be as a singer for them. I do not have any artist in mind. But I would be open to any ancestral music, or bands searching for ancestral singing. Bands who do not want to have any physical contact or live show. 9.Who would you  say are the bands biggest  influences and have they remained the same over the years? For the readers who have never heard Abysmal Growls Of Despair  how would you  best describe your music?

I would say the main influences that have remained the same until now are Ataraxie, Remembrance, Comatose Vigil, Amenra, Hate Forest and Northaunt. It is not easy to describe AGoD because I have composed albums of funeral doom, of dark ambient and of drone. But I would think the main albums would be of funeral doom. I would say that AGoD is focused on slow overwhelming music with deep growls. The main themes are despair, madness, death, grief, ancient civilisations and spirituality and misanthropy. It is not a music for everybody and I know that most people won't like it and won't even sit through a full song, being often longer than 10 minutes. My music always focuses on feelings, it is made to make you feel something, it is emotional and ambient. It is not something you headbang along. It is something you experience because it is created from what I experience, because I do music to be myself, to express things that are inexpressible, things that haunt me.

10.Torn is the newest  full length  how long did it take you to write the music for this release? How long does it usually take you to complete one song?
I don't really remember, I would say between 4 and 6 months for the full album, from composition to master. For one song, it depends, but I'll say between one week and 3 weeks, from composition to master. But the master is always done last, once I have all the songs mixed. And before to have all the songs mixed, I can rerecord some instruments/vocals if needed to have the most coherent sound through the album.
11.Where do you draw inspiration for the lyrics and what are some subjects written about on the new release?
The last release's lyrics were written by Jorg Puschmann. They are autobiographical and relate what he went through while caring for his wife when she was fighting her cancers. For previous releases, my main inspiration has always been my own sickness and depression, but also in a general way despair, madness, death, grief, ancient civilisations and spirituality and misanthropy. 12.Besides Torn are the bands previous releases still availible for the readers to purchase? If yes  where can the readers purchase your releases?

Yes, of course, all the previous releases are on my bandcamp, to stream and download. And all the major releases are on all streaming platforms like youtube, spotify and such. Torn will soon be available in CDs, from my bandcamp and many online stores. A few older releases in CDs/physicals must still be available here and there online. 13.Do you  currently work with any other bands or solo projects? If yes  please tell the readers a little about them?
I do not work with any other bands but I am currently working on my new solo project, Abysmal Rage. The first album, A House No One Could Live In, will be available with Wormhole Death Records the 6th of November. It will be only a digital release. The lyrics were written by my companion. Let me share with you the official description of the album: A House No One Could Live In is an oppressive album of Death Doom Metal. The massive and crushing power of 8 string guitars and 5 string bass immerse the listener in hatred and rage. The vocals are drenched in desperation, rage, blasphemy and human terror. The lyrics of some tracks describe autobiographical events, others consist of spiritual metaphors.

14. When you  need to take a break from working on new music or band business what do you like to do in your free time?
Spirituality is very important to me and is a big part of my daily life. The shortest way to give you an idea is to let you imagine shamanic practices. I enjoy playing video games on PC as well, like The Elder Scrolls, The Witchers, Shadow of Mordor/Shadow of War, Diablo 3 and 4, Senua's Sagas, ...
15.Thank you  Hangsvart  for taking the time to fill this interview out do you have any final comments for the readers?

Thank you for submitting this interview. I liked your questions, many of them are not often asked. I like to add to my interviews that people with financial difficulties and/or health issues can contact me via my bandcamp if they wish to download an album for free. I will gladly provide a download code.

Interview with  Postmortal  done on 6-7-25

1.Hello please introduce yourselves to the readers?

Dawid: Hello. We are Postmortal, a funeral doom metal band from Kraków in Poland.

Michał: Hello all.

2.When did you first discover death and funeral doom metal music and what is it about this genre of music that you love so much?

Dawid: For me the first touch with death metal was in 2007. I remember I was sitting in an internet cafe and checking different music videos on some site. That day I’ve found Vader - This is the War music video and I fell completely in love with that band. Back then everything had to be heavier and faster for me. Around 2009-2010 I’ve found Draconian. This band led me to more slower riffs. The turning point was 2012 when I went to the Ahab concert on Brutal Assault. I was absolutely mesmerized by the slow and heavy riffs and crushing vocals. I love the feeling doom metal music gives me. The tranquility and melancholy. It makes me calm.

Michał: I first discovered funeral doom music around 2014 or 2015. I remember my friend Sludge who later became the band's first bassist showed me Thergothon. I've always been more drawn to heavy and slow riffs than fast and aggressive ones, so when I heard extreme slow and heavy playing I immediately decided that this was something for me.

3.Who were the first bands that caught your attention?Who are some of the current bands that you have been listening to lately?

Dawid: As described earlier - Ahab, Draconian, Type o Negative. Currently I have a mix of different genres on my playlist - Zeal&Ardor, Bloodywood, Heilung, Vartra, Born of Osiris, Ahab, Type o Negative, Therion and Draconian. Could say that’s my main focus nowadays.

Michał: First of all, the aforementioned Thergothon, The Funeral Orchestra, Ahab, Tyranny, Evoken. I don't listen to much funeral doom these days, but Pantheist caught my attention recently. I recently watched their concert from 2023 at Organic Doom vol. 1, a wonderful, mystical performance.

4. Postmortal was started in 2016 when did you first decide to start this band? Are you satisfied with how things have gone with the band over the years? How did you choose Postmortal as the name of the band?

MichaÅ‚: the idea which appeared in our minds during 20th edition of Brutal Assault festival in Czech Republic in 2015. Almost all Postmortal first line-up were there. Yes, I am but I feel a certain dissatisfaction. I regret a bit that I relied more on other bands  I played in in the past, which was reflected at the expense of Postmortal. The band’s name was suggested by our first bassist “Sludge” .

5.Who would you say are the bands biggest influences? For the readers who have never heard Postmortal how would you best describe the bands music?

Michał: First of all, I would list here the bands from Question 3 when it comes to funeral doom. But I also drew inspiration from Black and Death metal when writing Postmortal music

6.Profundis Omnis is the debut full-length how long did it take to write the music for the debut? How long does it usually take to complete one song?

Michał: The material for this album was created so long ago that it's hard for me to say. From what I remember, the material was created in no more than 2 years. In fact, half of the material for Profundis Omnis was already ready during the recording of our EP Soil. A single song can be created very quickly if all the components of it stick together. It can take even a week. However, if something doesn't quite fit and you start to rework the song in every possible way, sometimes a year is not enough time for one song.

7.Where do you draw inspiration for the lyrics?Which usually comes first the music or the lyrics?

Dawid: Everything started with music. When I joined the band in 2018, most of the songs were ready, they just needed lyrics. On the other hand I wrote them independently and afterwards tried to fit them into music. I’m mostly a happy person so my lyrics aren’t inspired by my own experiences. I treat my lyrics as a novel, I think of a story and try to become the main character. Then I write what he might feel and think.

8.Besides the debut Profundis Omnis is their any other releases or merchandise currently availible for the readers to purchase? If yes what is availible and where can the readers purchase it?

Dawid: We have released an EP called “Soil”. There are still a few copies available to buy on our bandcam. Any future releases and merch will be available there

MIchał: However there is the possibility to buy album in digital form all the time.

9.I believe Postmortal is a two man band. Would you like to add new musicians to perform some live shows soon?Or do you prefer to work as a duo?

Dawid: We are gathering musicians needed for live shows. It’s very hard in this genre but we are successful. We already had our first live rehearsal. I guess we will be ready for autumn to give some live shows.

Michał: I hope we will play shows in future, I love to play live..

10.What is your opinion of the doom and funeral doom scene in Poland over the years?

The Polish doom metal scene is mainly bands playing stoner doom, which is probably the most popular of all doom subgenres lately. We have very strong representatives here, such as Dopelord, Belzebong, Weedpecker, Spaceslug. There used to be more bands playing more traditional doom or gothic doom. Most of them splitted up or are still deep in the underground.

11.Who are your all-time favorite Polish bands? Are their any new bands you could recomend to the readers?

Dawid: Vader, Hunter, Decapitated, Miyasis, Cień, Mgła.

Michał: From what I've been listening to lately: Obscure Sphinx, Mag, Wij, Sunnata. From black metal, which is a lot here: Mgła, Mord'A'Stigmata, Totenmesse, Medico Peste, Jarun, Above Aurora, Gorycz. Bands that I don't necessarily listen to every day now but I have a lot of sentiment for: Medebor, Hunter, Acid Drinkers, Sirrah

Interview with Rigor Sardonicous done by Patrick posted on 12-18-18

Interview with Rigor Sardonicous  done by Patrick

1. Hello how are things going in New York these days? Please introduce yourself to the readers?
Greetings Patrick and thank you. We are Joe Fogarazzo and Glenn Hampton of Rigor Sardonicous. New York is not the bastion it once was and is getting very expensive to live, but what would one expect from a leader of the criminal state.

2. Rigor Sardonicous was started in 1988 what gave you the idea to start this band? How did you choose the name Rigor Sardonicous as the name of the band?
Glenn founded and named the band years before I came into the fold. And yes we feel that the name very much is in line with our visions. He derived the name from a short story called Mr. Sardonicus and is about the body contorting a smile after passing into death caused by the rigidity of the muscles and tissues.

3. Who would you say are the bands biggest influences over the years and have they remained the same since the beginning til present day?
Slayer, Autopsy, Bach, post-Ozzy Black Sabbath, have been among our highest influences.

4. I know Rigor Sardonicous is a two man band would you like to find new musicians to make a full line up or do you prefer to work as two piece?
We have made many attempts to get a drummer, even if only for live performances such as Mortician does, but a competent drummer is hard to find. We did have Steve Moran, ex-Evoken, who recorded on our Apocalypsis Damnare album and played a few shows, but otherwise Rigor will likely remain Glenn and I.

5. Ridenti Mortuus is the bands newest release how long did it take the band to write the music for the new release? How long does it usually take to complete one song?
Everything for this release was composed over a weekend. It all just fell into place while another band I was involved with faltered on a recording session.

6. I believe that Ridenti Mortuus is a digital only release. Are their any plans to do a physical release in 2019? If yes will it be self released or would you like to work with a label?
We would prefer a label to do a physical release but we will see in time if we will do a small run on our own. I have gone nearly broke with postage in the past as many others have struggled with that as well.

7. Rigor Sardonicous has released quite a few full lengths and splits and EP's are these still available for the readers to purchase? Besides releases does the band have any other merchandise available if yes what is available and where can the readers buy it?
Only digital downloads are available on our Bandcamp site. All else is sold out.

8. The band comes out of the New York doom metal scene what is your opinion of New York's death, doom metal scene over the years?
The doom scene in this area doesn’t really exist. Many other bands of this style here are no more, such as Winter and Symphony Of Grief. It’s just us and Evoken that I know of who are in an adjacent state. I hope to see more bands like this rise from this area.

9. Who are your all-time favorite metal bands coming out of New York and are their any new bands you feel the readers should check out soon?
The New York sound, as it was known, was never an inspiration to us. We sought to go entirely left-field from that. But some bands worth looking into are Artificial Brain, Braindead, and Steel Wolf.

10. Besides working in Rigor Sardonicous do either of you work in any other bands or solo projects? If yes please tell the readers a little about them?
I was in Dimentianon for years and more recently Teloch Vovin, which has just gone into hiatus. I was also in a rock band called Pink Chameleon for a little while and a classical guitar ensemble. I like doing differing bands and styles as I find it can help to direct focus.

11. When you need take a break from working on new music or band business what do you like to do in your free time?
I love going into nature and separating from the world as often as I am able.

12. 2018 is about to come to a close what have been some of your favorite releases this year?
While not new to this year as I recently heardthem, I go with Shape Of Despair’s Monotony Fields and Hail Of Bullets The Rommel Chronicles.

13. Thank you for taking the time to fill this interview out do you have any final comments for the readers?
Thank you to all for reading to this point. Find us on Bandcamp where all of our music is and some of it free .https://rigorsardonicous1.bandcamp.com/
