Interview with RL. Vocalist and instruments for Charon Kruk Posted on 3-31-22

1.Hello RL. please introduce yourself to the readers?

-Hello everyone my name is Roberto Loera or best known as R.L. or Maar. I am originally from Aguascalientes Mexico and I currently reside in Gypsum Colorado.

2.When did you first become interested in writing and playing music? What are the instruments that you currently play?

-My interest in music dates way back since my childhood, I started taking music writing and recording at the age of 16 when I was in high school.

Currently I play all guitars, Bass and keyboards I unfortunately have to program drums since I don’t have the space for a drum set.

3.Are you self taught or did you take some lessons when first starting out? Are their any instruments that you currently do not play but would like to learn one day?

-No I never wanted to take lessons I wanted to learn at my own pace and experiment with the instruments I had available.

Drums are an instrument that I wish I could play full time.

4.RL.you also handle the vocals for the band when did you first become interested in screaming and growling?Do you do anything special to keep your throat and voice healthy?

-I remember I heard this band called Bethlehem in 2015* don’t remember correctly and I got really hooked up on that vocal style.

Drink hot tea, personally I recommend black tea.

5.Who some of your all-time favorite musicians and vocalists over the years?

-The Cure, The Cult, Ulver, Mayhem, Watain I could go on. As for Vocalists not clue everyone has a special way to sing and express themselves uniquely.

6.RL. you started Charon Kruk in 2018 what gave you the idea to start this band? How did you choose Charon Kruk as the name of the band and does it have a special meaning?

-Actually Charon Kruk started in 2016 under the name of Stormblast I had a line up of 5 members,, we recorded the Bleak Path Demo MMXVI and the hard drive got lost, as of the former members they left and started their own bands, in 2020 during the pandemic I got with R.S. (Lyrics and keyboards now) and I told her that I had said band and I decided to rename it Kruk (crow in Polish language) Crows are part of my culture in Mexico , where I’m from crows are known for being bad omens or witches even.

As for the new name we had to change it because a band named Kruk (completely different music genre) wanted us to “rename it or face consequences” and lo and behold Charon Kruk is born

Charon it’s the ferryman from the underworld

Charon it’s also a moon.

7.For the readers who have never heard Charon Kruk's music how would you best describe it?Who would you say are the bands biggest influences?

-unsettling, ethereal, mournful.

Believe it or not but The Cure it’s one of them, Plaga, Portal, Seth, just to name a few.

8.I believe you are the sole member of the band did you plan to work alone or would you like to find more musicians to work with in order to do some live shows one day?

-I work alone, I did recorded the first EP The King of Death and my first full length Wrapped in the Morning Red all by myself.

I truthfully think that this music is better experienced not live, I tried to find musicians to play live but nobody was into black metal, so at this point Charon Kruk it’s a studio only band.

9.Wrapped In The Morning Red is the debut full length that was released through Plague Demon Rec and Blasphemous Creations Of Hell when did you first come in contact with these labels?

-I found out about Plague Demon Records through one of my friends Wvlfgar (Isataii, Kvlt ov Odium, Esus in Tenebris) I had the album out already I submitted my album to other labels but no answer , until I sent Namtar from PDR my album to have him listen to it, it was a real nice welcoming. Truly grateful to be with these two labels.

10.How long did it take to write the music for this release? How long would you say it usually takes to complete one song?

-To write a song it could take me days or even weeks, I try not to copy myself or just repeat the same song over and over.

For the album Wrapped in the Morning Red it took me 4 months to write it and between October and November I recorded it, I also took advantage I was diagnosed with Covid, took time off from work and focused on music.

11.Besides the Wrapped In The Morning Red release you have some past demo's and EP's out are these still availible for the readers to purchase?Besides physical releases do you currently have any other merchandise for the readers to purchase if yes what is availible and where can the readers purchse it?

- There are tapes from The King of Death available through Staring Into Darkness, I have a demo track compilation that I self released under a micro label I started named Contra el Mundo Contra la Vida.

Frost Root Records has still some copies left on tape of Wrapped in the Morning Red. So there is still some merch available.

12.What does Underground Metal mean to you?

- The underground metal scene means so much to me. It means support, it means creativity, no rules, the Underground is freedom! I really don’t have much to say, there’s a lot of great talent that needs to be appreciated !

13.When you need to take a break from working on new music or band business what do you like to do in your free time?

-aside from music I like to practice sports, baseball was a big part of me growing up, still playing, hiking, I don’t play video games and that’s something people find “concerning” haha.

14.Besidies working in Charon Kruk do you currently work with any other solo projects or bands? If yes please tell the readers a little about them?

-I started another BM project last year, Lamento Eterno It’s a symphonic Black Metal band, there’s a demo out called “The Eternal Lament”

Me and R.S. are working on a unnamed synthwave project. With big influences such as Ulver, Manes, Perturbator.

5.Thank you RL. for taking the time to fill this interview out do you have any final comments for the readers?

- Thank you a lot Patrick for this opportunity.

Interview with Fumigation posted on 3-12-22

1.Hello please introduce yourselves to the readers?

Hey this is Chris, bassist for Fumigation “Your Death Metal Pest Control Specialists” from Ottawa, ON, Canada.

2.When did you first discover death metal and who were the first bands that caught your attention?Who are some of the current bands that you have been listening to?

Sometime in high school I heard Cannibal Corpse and that was the gateway into death metal and the underground for me. From there I got into bands like Cryptopsy, Immolation, Cephalic Carnage, Malignancy, Spawn of Possession... Still listen to all those bands but currently I've been playing a lot of Soreption and Visceral Disgorge.

3.When did you first meet the other members of Fumigation and was it long before you formed this band? How did you choose Fumigation as the name of the band?

Ah the origin story... Basically sometime in early 2008 me and Vitto (guitar) were hanging out one night shortly after I got a job as an Exterminator, and were joking around about how funny it would be to start a band based around my job and the pest control industry. He came up with the name right away, but we kind of just laughed it off... but the next day I still had it top of mind, and had a bunch of riffs laying around. A few weeks later I finished and posted some tracks with drum machine on Myspace with the Fumigation name and Vitto was down to make it a real band. We then posted some ads looking for members to complete the lineup and got things moving.

4.Who would you say are the bands biggest influences? For the readers unfamilar with Fumigation's music how would you best describe the bands musical style?

Fumigation has a strong mid-paced death metal and groove base (Skinless, Bloodbath, Suffocation, Immolation, Pantera, Crowbar), with elements of tech and melodic death (Martyr, Soreption, Cryptopsy, Decapitated) and brutal slamming death metal thrown in (Visceral Disgorge, Severed Savior, Katalepsy).

5.Structural Extermination is the bands latest full length release how long did it take the band to write the music for this release?Do all the members take part in the writing process or does one member usually write everything?

8 years! I do all the writing, and a couple tracks were written back in the “IPM” sessions of our first release. Over the years I was always writing songs we just never learnt them all, but also released a couple EP's in between. A few tracks were written within a year of recording Structural Extermination so it's not like every song is old, it just took a while to get the right mix of songs ready for an album.

6.Where does the band draw inspiration for the lyrics and what are some subjects written about on the new release?

The entire theme of the band basically revolved around the life of an Exterminator and the pest control industry. Insects, rodents, chemicals, bad clients, units with poor sanitation... we don't really take it too seriously. Very tongue in cheek jokey lyrics, but the music is serious. We spend a lot of time on the music side of things making sure that is well written and constructed and performed.

7.Besides the Structural Extermination release are the bands past releases still available?Does the band have any other merchandise currently available If yes what is available and where can the readers purchase it?

Yeah! We're sold out of our first full length “Integrated Pest Management” but all our releases are available for streaming at all your favourite streaming sites and as digital downloads from our Bandcamp site - https://fumigationmetal.bandcamp.com If you prefer a physical CD then go to our label CDN Records - https://cdnrecords.com/label-artists/fumigation

For merch we have a classic selection - https://fumigation.bigcartel.com and also an exclusive collection - https://www.twistedtsmerch.com/fumigation

8.What does Underground Metal mean to you all?

Underground metal means camaraderie, support, collaboration, community. We're all one big gross disgusting family.

9.When you need to take a break from working on new music or band business what do you like to do in your free time?

Music is the main thing for sure, but outside that I’d say sports gambling and fantasy sports is up there. Sports!

10.Besides working in Fumigation do any of the members currently work with other bands or solo projects? If yes please tell the readers a little about them?

Yeah pretty much every band in Ottawa has members scattered in different bands. Matt & Tom are also in Signs of Chaos (melodic groove metal) and join Norilsk (doom) for live shows, Vitto is in Whispers in the Maze (melodic metal) and has some new black metal project brewing, Dan was most recently in Deformatory (tech death), while I did session work for the latest Spilling Entrails (slam) album.

11. Fumigation comes out of Canada's brutal death metal scene what are your thoughts of the scene in Canada over the years?

Cryptopsy and Gorguts got the ball rolling, then came Beneath the Massacre and just took everything to a new level of brutality. Canada is a great source of brutal metal from coast to coast, but also a lot of really good technical and progressive bands. Frankly Canada has a lot good bands period, regardless of metal genre you can and will find exactly what you're looking for.

12,Who are your all-time favourite bands coming out of the Canada and are their any new bands you feel the readers should check out?

All time faves...hmmmmm that’s a tough question and the answers could change at any time here, but for the bigger bands I’ll say Archspire (tech), Cryptopsy (tech death), Martyr (melo tech). For the local scene I’ll go with Deformatory (tech), Deamon (brutal death), and Immersed (tech death). For the deeper underground Goreworm (tech), and Oracles of Oppression (melo death). New bands to keep an eye on are Purity in Perversion (SBDM), Ignominy (death), Creme Flesh (slam)

13.Thank you for taking the time to fill this interview out do you have any final comments for the readers?

Thanks man! Go to this link - https://linktr.ee/fumigation – from there you can check out everything that is Fumigation. Besides that, with Spring around the corner all the insects will be coming to invade your home soon. Be sure to call your local exterminator to setup exterior treatments of your home to prevent pest access.                                                                                                                                        Band Contacts                                                                                                                                                https://linktr.ee/fumigation                                                                                                                            https://fumigationmetal.bandcamp.com/                                                                                                      https://www.facebook.com/fumigationmetal                                                                                                https://fumigation.bigcartel.com/                                                                                                                  Label  Contacts                                                                                                                                              https://cdnrecords.com/                                                                                                                                  https://cdnrecords.bandcamp.com/                                                                                                                https://www.facebook.com/cdnrecords                                                                                                          https://twitter.com/cdnrecords

Interview with Howling posted on 3-6-22

1.Hails Draugr please introduce yourself to the readers?

Hails to you! I'm Draugr, the sole member behind the black metal project called Howling. I am based in Cincinnati Ohio where I was born and raised.

2.When did you first discover Black Metal and who were the first artists and bands you heard?Who are some of the current bands that have caught your attention?

I first heard Bathorys self titled through a buddy of mine in high school. I was really into death metal at the time and the internet wasn't as big as it is now but I immediately found something in it. I went home and devoured everything I could find and its been a staple ever since. As for newer bands I've really been into Deathspell Omega, Leviathan, Taake, Minenwerfer, Spectral Wound, Helleruin, Enepsigos, White Death and Arkhtinn to name a few. I always find something every five minutes that I really like.

3.When did you first become interested in writing and performing music? What was the first instrument that you learned to play?

I used to hear a lot of different styles of music growing up but I was definitely more attracted to anything with a heavy guitar in it so I constantly searched for stuff that had that particular kind of sound, from then on I got into metal through sabbath and the big 4 of thrash and after a while I got my 1st guitar at 12-13 and began to teach myself how to play from books and online videos.

4.What are the current instruments that you play? Are their any instruments that you would like to learn to play one day?

I play the electric and acoustic guitar, bass, a little bit of drums and some keyboard when its necessary. I'd love to learn how to play the violin or the piano since I've always been into symphonic stuff.

5.Who would you say are your biggest influences and favorite musicians over the years?

Wrest from Leviathan is a huge inspiration for me. His music was visceral and incredibly punishing and mellow all at the same time, all around honest and creative musician. I really love Quorthon as well for his ability to write dark passages and his boldness to do what he did on his albums in the 90s. Mortuus/Arioch from Funeral Mist/Marduk for his creativity and ability to write the most brutal stuff I've ever heard. I've had the privilege to meet people like Hoest from Taake and Morgan from Marduk and talk with them about how they write stuff and thats rubbed off on me a little bit since it was earlier in Howlings formation when that happened.

6.You also handle the vocals when did you first start screaming and growling?Do you do anything special to keep your throat and voice healthy?

I first tried it years ago and kind of gave up because I have a naturally monotone deep voice and I couldn't get very high with it. Over time I learned how to use my diaphragm and mix my vocals on recordings the correct way and I was able to do something great with it. As far as keeping my vocals intact I tend to take as many breaks as I need during recordings and relax as much as possible. Seldom recording vocals helps too so I have a lot of respect for people who do this shit all the time.

7.Who are your all-time favorite vocalists?

Mortuus/Arioch from Marduk/Funeral Mist/Triumphator, Wrest from Leviathan, Mikko from Deathspell Omega, Hoest from Taake, Damon from Bestial Warlust, Dagon from Inquisition, Daemon from Limbonic Art and of course Quorthon from Bathory just off the top of my head.

8.When did you first get the idea to form Howling and are you satisfied with how things have gone with the band so far?

I had briefly played with other people from around my area and there just wasn't a scene for this kind of music. Everyone wanted to play some variation of death metal or power metal and although I like both genres it wasn't what I wanted to do so I started listening to 1 man bands starting with Burzum and going down the list and eventually said to myself "I can do that." so began the process of teaching myself how to record and write songs alone. I have to say though I am pretty happy with how things are going. I never thought anyone would pick me up but I'm currently sitting here on Blasphemous Creations Of Hell Records and Plague Demon records and I'm very proud of that fact.

9.Draugr you are the sole member of the band when you started this band did you plan to work alone or would you like to find some musicians to make a full line up?

I fully intend for Howling to be my personal project. I'm open to doing stuff with other people when I have time but Howling is a very personal thing for me and letting someone in on it would be uncomfortable for me.

10.Who would you say are Howling's biggest influences and for the readers unfamilar with your music how would you best describe Howling's style?

Definitely Bathory, Bestial Warlust, Revenge, Behexen, Leviathan, Burzum, Deathspell Omega, Taake, Funeral Mist, Krieg, Mayhem, Darkthrone, etc. I would describe Howling as a more dissonant take on the more brutal styles of black metal with some mellow passages added in to keep a flow going for the tracks.

11.If you had the opportunity who are some musicians you would like to work with?

I'd work with anyone, theres definitely a few like Wrest or Akhenaten of Judas Iscariot but if they are original and open to being as creative as possible I would definitely work with that person in a heart beat.

12.Altar Of Depravity is the debut full length that was released at the end of 2021 how long did it take you to write the music for the debut release? How long does it usually you to complete one song?

I started writing for it after the release of The Aesthetics Of Rot EP and a lot of it was brand new material but some were unused riffs that I had on the shelf so I believe it took me a good 8 months to compose every track. Every song has its complexities and its own character so the time varies, its taken me as long as a few months and as short as one night to write a single track from beginning to end but on average about a month if I don't go back and change something that no longer works for me.

13.Where do you draw inspiration for the lyrics and what are some topics written about on the debut release?Which usually comes first the music or the lyrics?

Music is ALWAYS first, its the most important factor for me. If the riffs don't work or the structure then I don't care what the lyrical content is. As far as the lyrics go I do write open ended passages that give an opportunity for the reader to interpret it in their own way. I haven't released the lyrics to the debut yet (which I will soon) but anytime I write its from a visceral angle, its always about my observations and/or experiences with humanity and the complex state of being that we are in, good or bad.

14.Besides the debut full length are Howling's past releases still availible for the readers to purchase?Besides physical releases does the band have any other merchandise currently availible if yes what is availible and where can the readers purchase it?

Absolutely. My bandcamp has CDs and digital editions for both the EP and the album and there is clothing and misc merch available through Blasphemous Creations Of Hell Records. You may find the links through their social media.

15.What does Black Metal mean to you?

Black Metal for me is freedom and power. Its an extension of myself and others that comes from deep within that forms something dark, abrasive and punishing yet can be incredibly meaningful and insightful, the direction is purely up to the artist and when you have many different realms to explore and many outcomes and interpretations to work towards you have total freedom and endless power to draw from and you cannot put a price on something that powerful.

16.Besides Howling do you currently work with any other solo projects or bands? If yes please tell the readers a little about them?

I do not at the current time.

17.Thank you Draugr for taking the time to fill this interview out do you have any final comments for the readers?

The label and I both have social media you can like and follow so if you wish to support the underground please go to those pages and do so. All of the links to our respective bandcamps are on our platforms and anyone who wishes to inquire about anything may send me a message and I'll do my best to answer.
