Ural--Anthropic Genetic Involution (CD) {2026 Xtreem Music}

Ural play a mixture of Bay Area and Germanic thrash styles, often having the speed of Kreator and the jagged riffs of Forbidden. The guitar playing is quite excellent, especially when the solos hit and the guitarists' talent truly shows. The vocals remind me a little of Death SS with a somewhat thick Italian accent and the little melodies the singer weaves alongside his yells and shouts, occasionally veering away from thrash vocals and into classic metal territory. The band is quite capable of technical playing as some of their transitions show, with the occasional wild rhythm and off-time riff. Some of this amazing playing is at the beginning of the song "Wrong Children," which actually made me sit up and listen. These themes come back and intensify as the song progresses. The songs themselves are a bit hit and miss, but the playing is interesting enough to keep me listening. I just wish this was a bit more intense and catchy.

1.Hello how are things going in Brazil this week? Please introduce yourself to the readers?

Hello man, firstly I want to thank you for the interview opportunity, but I'm fine, this is William, drummer, let's go...

2.When did you first discover Thrash Metal and what is it about this genre of music that drew you in?

Discovering thrash metal as a teenager, when a friend lent me a K7 tape of Metallica, Kill em all, from then on everything changed, I had never heard that in my life, I already knew some "lighter" things, but that speed and aggression in the riffs left me impacted.

3.Who were the first bands and artists that you discovered and who are some of your current favorite bands?

At this time of discovery, Metallica was the first, then more bands appeared, Slayer, Megadeth, Exodus, the best known, after that we went deeper into Thrash metal, came Kreator, Destruction, Dark Angel and other more aggressive bands, they are influences for us to this day, of course, in addition to Brazilian metal as well.

4.Deathraiser was formed in 2009 when did you all decide to start this band? How did you choose Deathraiser as the name of the band?

Deathraiser came up with the name Mercilless before, the band was formed in 2006, but in 2009 we changed the name to Deathraiser, since then we have been the same lineup. The name came from the song by the band Attomica, from the album "Disturbing the noise", as we really liked that album, that's where the band's name came from.

5.Who would you say are the bands biggest influences and have they remained the same over the years? For the readers who have never heard Deathraiser how would you best describe the bands musical style?

Our influences remain the same, our sound proposal is to play old school, fast and aggressive thrash metal, our main influences are Sepultura (old), Sarcophagus, Attomica, Kreator, Demolition Hammer, Dark Angel, Slayer, among many others, we hate modernity (laughs).

6.Forged In Hatred is the bands second full length that will be released through Xtreem Music when did you all first come in contact with this label?

This contact came about through the extinct "Myspace", at the time we put out our first demo "Possessed by Thrash", and Dave from Xtreem Music contacted us to launch a new album.

7.Does the whole band take part in the writing process or does one member usually write the music for the songs? How long does it usually take to complete one song?

Our composition process is very slow (Laughs) that's why it took so long to release the second album (More laughs), but we started with the riffs, I also play the guitar, so that makes it a lot easier, and Thiago also does some riffs, and that's how the first songs appear, in the composition part it's more me and him, after putting together the skeleton of the song, the other musicians give their ideas. But there were songs that came out quickly and others that took too long, our process is careful for each riff (laughs).

8.Where does the band draw inspiration for the lyrics and what are some subjects written about on the new release?

A very good question, but I see few people talking about the lyrics, our lyrics process is also time consuming, we want to convey something with the lyrics, that's what happened in this second album, there were current and old issues that happened in our country, and in our locality, lyrics about the pandemic, problems that happened years ago in Brazil and that have now been revealed, and of course an overview of everything that has happened here in the last few years in our view.

9.Besides the upcoming Forged In Hatred release are there any copies of the debut release still for sale? What other merchandise do you currently have available for the readers to purchase?

10.Has Deathraiser had the opportunity to play very many live shows over the years? If yes what have been some of your most memorable shows?Who are some bands you have gotten to share the stage with?

We played a lot of shows throughout our history, without a doubt our first tour through the North and Northeast of Brazil was something memorable, but for us every show is important, but we can say that one of our last shows alongside Violator in Belo Horizonte was very special, playing in the city where Sepultura and Sarcofago were created, visiting the tomb where the cover of the album "INRI" became was incredible for us.

11.Are there any tours or shows planned in support of Forged In Hatred? If yes where will the band be playing?

At the moment we are focused on playing here in Brazil this year, and we have plans for a European tour next year, which will be our main goal with this album.

12.Deathraiser comes out of Brazil's thrash metal scene what are your thoughts of the scene in Brazil over the years?

The Brazilian scene is very rich, we have great bands, since the 80s revealing bands to the world, this is very important for us, we know how difficult it is to have a band here in Brazil, it is not easy, but we know the importance of our bands and this is what motivates us to continue.

13.Who are your all-time favorite bands coming out of Brazil?Are their any new bands you could recomend to the readers?

As I said above, we have great bands, and memorable bands that influenced us, we can mention Sepultura, Sarcofago, Chakal, Mutilator, Attomica, The mist, among many others, from our generation, in addition to the friendship we have, they were also influential for us, such as Farscape, Violator, Blasthrash, that's what I always recommend.

14.Besides working in Deathraiser do any of the members currently work with other bands or solo projects? If yes please tell the readers a little about them?

At the moment we don't have other projects, but we wanted to, but over the years the commitments increased, so we don't have much time for other projects (laughs).

Mortal Scepter--Ethereal Dominance (CD/LP/CS) {Xtreem Music}

This quartet from France have released their second full length a full six years after their first. This is black thrash, but very heavy on the thrash, being quite technical and skillful. The music is a hybrid of the Bay Area and German thrash sounds, leaning more toward the German side, with driving riffs on the one hand and speed and technicality on the other. The vocals are a rabid growl that would be at home on any good black metal record and the singer is is both powerful and authentic. He's somewhat rhythmic in his vocal patterns, reminding me a lot of early Kreator and slightly of early Sodom. The cover of the record is interesting, geared more toward science fiction than anything, and that's quite different for black thrash.  I'd be willing to bet these bastards kill in a live setting, and I know my neck would hurt the next day. This comes highly recommended - this is not "pizza and party" thrash, this is the real deal.

Interview with Putrevore

 

1.Hello please introudce yourselves to the readers?

Rogga - Rogga Johansson, maker of a lot of music I guess you could say. Guitarist, even though I wouldnt really label myself any good at that. In Putrevore Im anyways the guy doing the riffing.

2.At what age did you two first discover death metal music and what is it about this genre that drew you in?

Rogga - I grew up with heavy metal since I was a small kid, who borrowed and copied tapes from older friends. I dont know when it got more extreme really, I guess in sixth grade both more extreme metal and industrial music was getting more and more interesting to me and then a few years after I started making my own music really.

3.Who were the first bands that caught your attention?Who are some of the current bands that you all have been listening?

Rogga - Well the first bands that really made me love music was stuff like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest, WASP and Twisted Sister. Then I got into stuff like Dismember, but also industrial music like Skinny Puppy. As for current bands Im not very interested really, I more like old band and also like when they make new albums. I still listen to the new stuff they release. I think a new band I really enjoy though is High Parasite, very good stuff.

4.When did the two of you first meet and was it long before you started this band

Rogga - I think we came across each other maybe 25 years ago. I dont recall how but my guess would be that it was when Dave signed Paganizer to his label.

5.Who would you say are Putrevore's biggest influences and have they remained the same over the years?For the readers who may not have heard the band yet how would you describe the music?

Rogga - Actually Dave is my biggest influence when it comes to Putrevore haha. Sounds strange maybe but I have my own style of writing, and Dave told me to stop that haha, and make something more brutal and heavy and eeire. He told me to check out Funebre and Rottrevore and stuff like that, which I wasnt very familiar with, and then I simply tried to make music that was as heavy. I dont know how to describe Putrevore best but I try to make it as crushing as I can. But still I tend to put some melody work into it aswell.

6.Rogga J. you handle the guitars and bass for the band when did you first become interested in writing and performing music?Who are some of your biggest influences over the years?

Rogga - It was back in the sixth grade, when I was listening to both metal and industrial music. Then I tried making my own stuff with electronic gear, and then I started growling. And a few years later I also picked up the guitar, mainly because I didnt just wanna be the growler and try to describe my ideas to the guitarplayer, I felt it was easier if I just played  them myself. Then through the decades I have kept doing it, growling, making industrial music and playing guitar. I like to be diverse and do all theses different parts myself.

7.Dave R. you take care of the vocals for the band when did you first start growling and screaming? Do you do anything special to keep your voice healthy?

Dave - No, I don't really do anything special to take care of my voice, I live a normal life and the truth is that I don't usually sing except in rehearsals, recordings or live shows.

8.Who would you say are your favorite vocalist over the years?

Rogga - Ive always been very fond of Kam Lee and Dan Swanö.

9.Unending Rotten Cycle is the bands newest full length how long did it take to write the music for this release?How long would you say it takes to complete one song?

Rogga - Oh I dont recall really. when I start writing for an album it usually goes rather fast. So I would guess the whole album and the lyrics maybe took a couple of weeks. But then there's of corpse time added for arranging Dave's vocals and arranging drums by the drummer.

11.Both of you have been involved in the Underground Metal scene for deacades what is it that has kept you active in the scene for so long?

Rogga - I love the music, its as simple as that. I love playing music and theres a lot of nice people as well thats nice to share ideas with and to work with.

12.When you need to take a break from working on new music or band business what do you like to do in your free time?

Rogga - I like to spend time with the family, barbequing and drinking beer is also a great hobby haha.

1.Hello Paul  thank you for taking the time to  fill this interview out.Please introduce yourself to the readers?

I'm Paul Zavaleta from Deteriorot. I'm a songwriter, composer, producer. The Lead Guitarist and Vocalist from an Underground Death Metal band that would be considered one of many that pioneer'd the genre during it's infancy in the 80's and early 90's

2.When did you first start listening to underground metal and who were some of the first bands you listened to?Who are  some of your  current favorite  bands?

Well I only knew metal on the more commercial end like Slayer, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Dio, Judas Priest, Motorhead, until I was around 13 years old and my friend Renzo introduced me to Hellhammer, Celtic Frost, Sodom, Kreator, Destruction, Bathory. Eventually after starting a band and having demos/promos in circulation then lead to more Underground unsigned bands started writing to me and that more or less is it. 

3.Paul you  started Deteriorot     back in 1990 when did you  first get the idea to  start this band?

1990 is when the name was changed to DETERIOROT after 2 years already. 1990 is more or less is miscommunication by many advertisements and articles. The idea for the band started in 1987 and by 1988 I formed a full lineup and recorded 2 releases with our prior name Mortuary. When we found out in 1990 about the Mexican band also called Mortuary, we had to change the name to something unique, our own word, so we wouldn't have the same problem of having another band with the same name.

4.Who would you  say  Deteriorot's  biggest influences and how  do you feel the bands music has  changed  over the years?

Biggest influences has to be Black Sabbath, Metallica, Judas Priest, Megadeth, Slayer. These are all the bands I listened to when learning to play guitar, and it is what taught me how songs are best structured. When music wasn't just the guitar riff, it was also the great drumming, the bass was a rhythm that went along with the drums more vs bass following the guitar. The only real change I can say for Deteriorot is that I wanted to focus more on feeling, and atmosphere in the composition vs what was on the initial first demo recording. This question about change is probably best suited for a different band honestly. The reputation of what Deteriorot is known for is that people are expecting it to still sound like it was in 1992 and it's our niché and something that we've become known for now. Some are afraid when they hear of a lineup change that it will affect the sound to evolve into a more contemporary Death Metal style. The traditionalist don't want the formula to be messed with and I agree, I happen to be one of those traditionalist and I analyze and plan it while writing it to make sure it coincides with what sounds like Deteriorot. We don't want the recipe of Coca Cola to be messed with and people come home to Grandma's Cooking and expect it to taste the same. That's what you get with Deteriorot. I believe in consistency of a brand and when your music is more than 3 decades it then does become a brand on it's own. 

5.The Rebirth is the bands third full length  how long did it take you to write the music for the new release?

One of the songs "Dark Embrace" I got together with a friend of mine who plays drums earlier this year and we were at a studio. He just wanted to see if we can just free jam, improvise and he just play along and see if we have any musical chemistry. I just came up with the riff on the spot, had an idea of the next verse, chorus. Wrote it and put it together in 15 minutes. It's become our most streamed and down loaded song of all time. The Rebirth Album was really an on the spot album to write. I had taken somewhere around 3 months to write an album I called "Awakening" 12 songs in total. I spent around 6 weeks in recording all the guitars, bass, and vocals. I sent it to my friend James who is playing the European Tour this year 2023. But he just has had so much on his plate, it's a lot of time for anyone to learn out set of 10 to 11 songs. And he also plays in 2 other bands. He had to also learn music for a band he had just joined. Add that to also the responsibility of being a husband, a father, and working full time. So our first focus had to of course be the live set. By April and May, the time was going and passing fast and I know we needed to put out an album by summer to help the tour with promotion, publicity of a new album would help our tour with people hearing, reading on it, getting the album and then seeing we're coming to their city and country. I had to write an album that is a catchy album, and something that would be quality and I just turned my phone on record and played some stuff that came naturally to me. I like to make a plan like a template of how a song should go when I write so there is a structured formula. I wrote the music for the album in 2 days. Recorded what both guitar parts would be on separate tracks. We already had that one song "Dark Embrace" which was a demo version. So we had that one to re record. I drove up to Kentucky to teach the songs to the lineup and we recorded 3 songs a day for a 3 day weekend. After I wrote the lyrics the next week and finished the recording for my guitar, leads and vocals. 

6.Where do you draw inspiration for the lyrics amd what are some subjects written about on the new release?

 The inspiration all comes from the music itself. The music without the vocals has a story. Like a movie score. A song title comes. Then the lyrics go around what the song title is. Which usually comes first the music or the lyrics? Always the music. I feel inspired by a melody and I try to play what is in my head. I think about the drums, which is the centerpiece of the whole atmosphere to me. It's all about the feeling. All of the subjects of the new album is really more or less the concept of the album title. The Rebirth. Coming back. I write the lyrics and put thought into them for people to read it, like a story. I rather a fan read them vs me telling them what it is about. 

7.Besides the The Rebirth  release you have two previous full lengths and some splits  are these still availible for the readers to purchase?Besides physical releases do you currently have any other merchandise for the readers to purchase if yes what is availible and where can the readers purchse it?

 8.Deteriorot  will  be doing a European tour  soon  is this the bands first time playing Europe?

We've been to Europe before. 

9.Who are some  bands you will be touring with and sharing the stage with?

We're touring with Ascended Dead. We're playing over 20 something shows all with different openers. Some bands I know from some other shows are Deadspeak, Anatomia, Druid Lord. 

10.What does Underground Metal mean to you and how do you feel it has changed over the years?

 

It means everything to me. It's a culture within itself and completely outside the more common pop rock commercial metal, or whatever is of the Thrash scene. This community is like no other and the way the network operates is incredible. It's changed for the better with the ease of the Internet and being able to send files, video chat, instant communication. More can be down now and the scene is bigger than it ever was. 

 11.Back in the 90's i know  fanzines were huge did you read very many fanzines?What do you feel made a good fanzine?

I did read fanzines but only when they were sent to me. Being in a band them and now with releases was overwhelming then and now when it comes to the amount of replies you have to do. It sucks really to be honest when you work all day and then feel you have all of this homework to do that takes 4 or 5 hours every night. Then I had 30 to 50 letters coming every day along with fanzines and tapes. Today I get probably a dozen instant messages from Facebook, Instagram, along with a dozen interviews a week constantly. Either email or podcast. Then the podcast they tell me it's an hour. It's Sunday and I am now 5 hours deep in it. It's too much really. Thats my long drawn out answer to say I don't have time to read fanzines or remember. I don't have time for any of this really. 

12.What are your all-time favorite  fanzines?

I don't really have the time. My wife is next to me and I'm ignoring her the past 2 hours just filling out these questions so I for sure don't have time to read fanzines. 

13.Tape trading was also huge  did you ever do  much tape trading?

I did trades when I would receive a cassette from another band and they would ask for a Deteriorot tape in trade. 

14.When you need to take a break what do you enjoy doing in your free time?

Spending time with my wife and daughter Cooking for my family. Watching funny reels on Instagram or Facebook.
