Interview with Craven Idol done on 5-21-21

1.Hello please introduce yourself to the readers?

Vrath: Hi, my name’s Vrath and I’m the founding member – guitarist/vocalist - of London’s Craven Idol. Thanks for having us!

2.When did you first discover metal music and who were the first bands that caught your attention?Who are some of the newer bands that you have been listening to?

Vrath: Rock and metal have always been part of my life, but I really started seeking it out and collecting in my early teens. My first love were NWOBHM bands like Priest and Maiden, whom I still obsessively listen to today. I think the biggest revelation came when I heard the likes of Satan and Venom, and realised just how deep the rabbit hole truly went. Newer UK bands I can recommend warmly are Grave Miasma, Adorior, Insurgency, and Dungeon.

3.When did you first meet the other members of Craven Idol and was it long before you formed the band?

Vrath: I met co-founder J. Scourger (drums/guitar) at university through common friends and we founded the band almost immediately over a few beers. We were both new to London and looking to form an old school extreme metal band. We continued as a two-piece for around five years, before eventually assembling a live line-up for out debut gig at the Armageddon Festival in 2010. I had known our bassist Suspiral for a good few years before he joined.

4.How did you choose Craven Idol as the name of this band and does it have a special meaning? What is the bands current line-up?

Vrath: The name came to us almost by accident. I listed band names I liked the sound of to Scourger on the phone and one of them happened to be Craven Idol… I have no idea where that came from (perhaps linked to the term ‘graven image’). The name has since taken on many meanings, often eluding to religions and other such corrupt organisations that people hang their hopes and dreams on. These are the craven idols of the modern world. On the cover of Forked Tongues two such creatures – Zeus and Typhon - face off against each other in a battle of cosmic supremacy.

5.Who would you say are the bands biggest influences and have they remained the same over the years? For the readers unfamiliar with your band how would you best describe Craven Idol's musicial style?

Vrath: Bathory, Sodom, Manilla Road, Master’s Hammer, Absu, Mercyful Fate, D666, Gospel of the Horns… just to name a few. I would say the influences have remained exactly the same and I very much doubt they ever will change. I tend to dub us Old School Extreme Metal, because we attempt to slot right into that sweet spot between the first and the second wave of black metal…. Before metal became all about rules and accessibility. Many a writer has called us black/thrash, which I think it a bit too one-dimensional given our wide array of influences…

6.Forked Tongues is the bands third full length release how long did it take the band to write the music for the new release? How long does it usually take the band to complete onesong?

Vrath: Looking back, I believe it took less than two years to write the album. Some of these tracks were around before our second album The Shackles Of Mammon was even released. Of course the music itself doesn’t mean the job’s complete, there’s covers, layouts, and release schedules to sort out… not made easier by Covid. So here we are four years later.

I don’t think there’s a blanket answer to your second question. Some of the songs achieve near completion in just a few rehearsals, whilst others – like say Deify The Stormgod – took around a year of strive to complete.

7.Where does the band draw influences for the lyrics and what are some subjects written about on the new release?Which usually comes first the music or the lyrics?

Vrath: Unlike our previous works, the lyrics on Forked Tongues are heavily rooted in Greek Mythology, more precisely the Titanomachy. The album recites the tale of Typhon, the father of monsters, and his battle against Zeus. According to legend, Zeus won the conflict by throwing Mount Aetna at the Titan and thereby imprisoning him beneath the volcano (that’s eruptions are credited to the enduring wrath of Typhon). Rather than merely retelling the olden tale, Forked Tongues acts more as a sequel, as we witness Typhon’s vengeance on the Olympians. I would say it’s somewhat of a concept album lyrically.

8.Besides the upcoming Forked Tongues release are the bands previous releases still availible to purchase?Besides physical releases does the band have any other merchandise currently availible for the readers to purchase if yes what is availible and where can the readers buy it?

Vrath: Our first album Towards Eschaton was repressed some years back so is still available for purchase. Our second record The Shackles Of Mammon has been sold out for a while now, but I believe it’s getting a repress soon as well. As far as merch is concerned, we have shirts and patches available on our bandcamp. The cover of Forked Tongues will be available as a flag.

9.Has Craven Idol had the opportunity to play live very often or do you prefer working in the studio? What have been some of the bands most memorable shows and who are some bands you have shared the stage with?

Vrath: Before the pandemic hit, we completed a one-month European tour with Brazil’s mighty Mystifier. Aside from creating new music, being on the road is easily the best part of band life, especially when you get to tour alongside your idols. Being in the recording studio itself can be a fairly nerve wrecking and stressful experience, so I definitely prefer actually writing the songs in our rehearsal space (called Death Trap) to recording them.We have had some ripping shows through the years, but most recently our gig in Berlin as part of the aforementioned tour was truly memorable. Bands we have shared the stage with include Sadistic Intent, Nifelheim, Watain, Pestilence, Vulcano, Pentagram, Impaled Nazarene, Demilich, Necros Christos, just to name a few…

10.When the pandemic is over and bands are able to tour and play live again are their any plans to tour in support of Forked Tongues?

Vrath: We currently have a release show planned at London’s Electrowerkz on the 11th of July with our Dark Descent label comrades Grave Miasma. At the time of writing, bans are being lifted in the U.K. so we are hopeful the gig will go ahead. We would obviously love to hit the road for another European tour… though it’s hard to tell when that can happen…

11.When you need to take a break from working on new music or band business what do you like to do in your free time?

Vrath: There is rarely a time when I’m not working on some band business or another. Playing music is an integral part of who I am, and I become extremely irritable if I go without my guitar for too long. That said, I’m a keen reader of history, mythology, sci-fi, and graphic novels, which also is where I draw a lot of my lyrics from. I also thoroughly enjoy drinking craft beer.

12.Besides Craven Idol do any of the members currently work with any other bands or solo projects? If yes please tell the readers a little about them?

Vrath: Members work in many other projects. Three fourths of the band also play in black metal act Crom Dubh. I’m also part of Scythian and Phaethon, whilst our drummer Heretic Blades plays in Fen.

13.What does Underground Metal mean to you?

Vrath: The underground is the truest form of metal. The word gatekeeper has gathered quite negative connotations, but it’s a big part what the underground is. It’s a community where metal exists unblemished from outside trends. There is no ulterior motives like money or fame through gimmicks… it’s music for music’s sake.

14.Thank you for taking the time to fill this interview out do you have any final comments for the readers?

Interview Constantius bass and vocals of Constantio and Crematorial Scatterings done on 5-16-21

1.Hello Constantius please introduce yourself to the readers?

- i am Constantius Chlorus (better known as Margul Demonic), creator of many obscure and underground projects.

2.When did you first start listening to metal music and who were the first bands you discovered?Who are some of the current bands and artists that you are listening to?

- in 2002 when i discovered some new metal acts like Static X and a band that changed it all for me, Mortician. nowadays i'm more focused of creating something of my own. barely listening to any of the new stuff, but maybe some funeral doom like Rigor Sardonicous inspires me.

3.When did you first become interested in writing and performing music? What was the first instrument you learned to play?

- as soon as i got a bass guitar in 2006 i started experimenting with some of my own ideas.

4.What are some of the current instruments that you play and are you self-taught or did you take lessons when first starting out? Are their any instruments that you would like to learn to play one day?

- i own a bass guitar and i do what i can with it. yeah i am self taught. i'm pleased with what i deliver through it.

5.You also handle the vocals for the bands when did you first start growling and screaming?Do you do anything special to keep your voice healthy?

- well, i'm not a professional singer, i tried with lot of styles and combinations, and nothing particular to shape the voice.

6.How long does it take to complete one song?Where do you draw inspiration for the lyrics?

- not too long, in the range of half an hour and the lyrics pop out of my head while recording.

7.Your newest project is Crematorial Scatterings when did you first get the idea to start this band? How did you choose Crematorial Scatterings as the name of the band?

- i had an idea for a while so i decided to try it and i reckon it was somewhat successful. Crematorial Scatterings was the name i had up in my sleeve from earlier times.

8.I believe you are the sole member of both bands would you like to find more musicians to work with or do you prefer working alone?

- sure i would, i tried with everything alone, but having other members would be cool.

9.If you had the opportunity to work with any musicians past or present who would you like to work with?

- never thought about that, some more underground acts and members.

10.Where can the readers listen to and buy your releases for both Constantio and Crematorial Scatterings?

- my releases are free to obtain and stream on the offered pages.

11.Besides the two projects do you currently work with any other bands or solo projects? If yes please tell the readers a little about these?

- currently no, i had a lot of projects during the past.

12.Constantius you live in Croatia what is your opinion of the metal scene there?

- well, it's no different than in most countries but not that much exposed, i think.

13.Who are your all-time favorite bands coming out of Croatia? Are their any new bands you feel the readers should check out soon?

- can't really recommend anything at this moment but maybe Usud, a death metal band.. Relating to new bands on the scene, i can't think of any haha.

14.What does Underground Metal mean to you?

- a lot it is a means to express something.

15.When you need to take a break from working on new music or band business what do you like to do in your free time?

- lot of activities involved like photograhy, history, exploration, astronomy...

16.Thank you for taking the time to fill this interview out do you have any final comments for the readers?

- yeah, be yourself and pursue what you're after.                                                                                          Band's Contacts                                                                                                                                              https://www.facebook.com/constantiosludgedeath                                                                                      https://www.facebook.com/crematorialscatteringssludgeslam

Interview with Robin Van Oyen vocalist, instruments for Gateway done on 5-15-21

1.Hello Robin please introduce yourself to the readers?

Hails, I'm Robin (R.) from Bruges. A small medieval town in Belgium where I reside and work as a youth worker. Gateway started back in 2014 as a solo side project where I could manifest my putrid love for everything death and doom, inspired by my hometown heritage.

2.When did you first become interested in writing and playing music? And what was the first instrument you learned to play?

Somewhere between 2008-2009, my first instrument was a cheap Epiphone SG that I later abused on the first Gateway demo.

3.Are you self-taught or did you take lessons when first starting out? What are some instruments that you currently play?

I'm fully self-taught. Guitar and Bass.

4.Robin you started Gateway in 2014 what gave you the idea to create this band? Are you satisfied with how things have progressed with the band over the years?

When I started Gateway it was a vessel for abrasive noise and distortion. Simple "caveman" riffs, Sabbath-style tuned down to the lowest I could go. Nasty vocals, sluggish grooves, the good stuff. If I wouldn’t be satisfied, I would quit, so yes. Progression in this project is something that always happens spontaneously, naturally.

5.Who would you say are Gateway's biggest influences and have they remained the same over the years? For the readers unfamilar with Gateway's musical style how would you best describe it?

Yeah, bands like Mortician, Cianide, Rippikoulu, Demilich, Winter, Thorr’s Hammer, Thy Grief Eternal... add some more obscure early 90's death metal.

“As dark and suffocating as strapping an oxygen mask to your truck’s muffler. Play at loud volume and watch worms come out of the ground with the sheer reverb produced.”

The above quote from CVLT NATION is quite accurate.

6.I believe you are the sole member of the band when you started out did you plan on working alone or would you like to find some new musicians to work with?

I was looking for local like-minded musicians when I started Gateway, but that didn't work out. Simple as that. I eventually found someone who added tons of atmosphere to the lead work of Gateway on the latest EP. Michiel (M.) is a good friend of mine who is also involved in my other band Cowl.

7.What do you feel is the easiest and hardest part about being a one-man band? If you had the opportunity to work with any musicians who would you like to work with?

I'm in full control of everything, that is the easiest and hardest part. If it comes to working together: musicians who share the same vision and passion.

8.Flesh Reborn is the newest EP. being released through Chaos Rec. when did you first come in contact with this label?

They reached out when I released an early version of the track "Slumbering Crevasses", I responded.

9.How long did it take to write the music for the new release? How long does it usually take to complete one song?

About 3 months for the new EP. Song completion varies from 1 to 2 weeks, when there is enough inspiration and mental strength, I pin things down easily.

10.Where do you draw inspiration for the lyrics and what are some subjects written about on the new EP.? Which usually comes first the music or the lyrics?

There are no real lyrics on this thing, the growls and screams are just another instrument for me really, adding tons of atmosphere. I have some sentences here and there, but that's it. The music comes first, always. Flesh Reborn is something of a weird Lovecraftian torture fantasy where I unleashed some inner demons.

11.Besides the Flesh Reborn EP are the previous releases still available for the readers to buy? Besides physical releases do you have any other merchandise currently available if yes what is available and where can the readers purchase it?

Go check out gatewaydeathdoom.bandcamp.com for all merch related stuff. Debut album is sold out, as well as the cassette version of “Scriptures of Grief” on Sentient Ruin. There will be shirts out soon, a first for this project.

12. Gateway comes out of Belgium's death, doom metal scene what is your opinion of the scene in Belgium over the years?

I don't really have an opinion on that. Aborted is probably the biggest Death Metal band around here, but they play quite fast and technical. In death and doom metal, not much around. If so, let me know!

13.Who are your all-time favourite bands coming out of Belgium and are there any new bands you could recommend to the readers?

Thee Plague of Gentlemen, Serpentcult, Sardonis, Bones, Opium Heathen, Wyatt E., Enthroned, Hemelbestormer,... Check out the latest Wolvennest, Alkerdeel and Gotmoor albums.

14.Besides working in Gateway do you currently work with any other solo projects or bands? If yes please tell the readers a little about them?

Cowl
: cowldoom.bandcamp.com, my main full band at the moment. Blending doom and some heavy metal with hints of death. Inspired by bands like Reverend Bizarre, Candlemass, Acid Witch… spooky pulp and exploitation. We’re still figuring out shit, it’s a fun project that’s in an early stage. Atrocious Command: atrociouscommand.bandcamp.com, chaotic black/ death, war metal. Made a demo in one take. Could be something more when time comes.

Maybe some new projects in the future…

15.Robin when you need to take a break from working on new music or band business what do you like to do in your free time?

Strength training and forest hikes. Reading and some hardcore Dark Souls and Bloodborne.

16.Thank you Robin for taking the time to fill this interview out do you have any final words for the readers?

Stay strong, stay healthy. Go visit the torture museum in Bruges. Thank you.                                             Band Contacts                                                                                                                                               https://www.facebook.com/gatewaydeathdoom                                                                                           https://gatewaydeathdoom.bandcamp.com/                                                                                                  Label Contacts                                                                                                                                               https://www.chaos-records.com/                                                                                                                   https://chaos-records.bandcamp.com/                                                                                                          https://www.facebook.com/chaosrecords                                                                                                    https://twitter.com/ChaosRecs

Interview with Marco Bassist of Chronic Hate done on 5-4 -21

1.Hello Marco please introduce yourself to the readers?

Hello, I’ m Marco the bass player of the Italian Death metal band Chronic Hate and one of the founding members

2.When did you first discover death metal and who were the first bands you listened to?Who are some of the current bands that have caught your attention?

I think I started listening to Death metal in 1998/1999 after years of Punk and Hardcore, I discovered Thrash metal and then Death metal and Black metal. The first Death metal band that destroied my mind was Possessed and all the great band that forged this style like Morbid Angel Death, Malevolent Creation, Cannibal Corpse , Dismember, Sinister, Angelcorpse ,Macabre, Incantation and all the well known initiators that Death metal fans know very well. Now I’m listening lots of bands and different styles but if we talk about Death Metal this year started with the new one of The Amenta, Solstice and Perdition temple.

3.Chronic Hate was started back in 2001 when did you and the other members first get the idea to start this band? Are you satisfied with how things have gone with the band over the years?

The idea of starting an extreme metal band was born in 2000 and the first months of 2001 ,speaking about this project with friends that like me play instruments and having the same vision and passion for metal music. Yes and no. Yes because I’m very proud of our band and about still being around after 20 years. We recorded albums, did a lot of great concert in Italy and across Europe ,met great people without ever compromising with no one. No, because I am an eternal dissatisfied and I always try to improve myself and Chronic Hate and reach new goals.

4.What is the current line-up of the band? For the readers who have never heard Chronic Hate's music how would you describe the bands musicial style?

The current line-up is: Andrea on vocals, Daniele guitar and backing vocals, Massimo guitar, Aleksandar drums and me Marco on bass. We play Death metal that combine old attitude of the masters and the modern blasting style of the last two decades. In our music you can find influencies of all Death Metal styles and specially in the new stuff a bit of Black metal. We have no cleam to innovate but we want to respect and honour the music that best reflects our ideas and messages.

5.The band is currently finishing up their newest release which i believe is a EP. how many songs will be on the new release? Will it be self-released or would you like to find a label to work with?

Yes, we have just finished the recording of a new EP titled ‘Reflection on ruin’, it includes four tracks, three new songs and a cover of the song Misanthropic by Dismember. It is a self release and it will be a sort of presentation of our new line up and the work that we start to do together after the realization of our previus album ‘The worst form of life’. The EP will be available in digital format and downloadable for free at our bandcamp page.

6.Does the whole band take part in the writing process or does one member usually write everything? How long does it take the band to complete one song?

All members take part in the composition, writing and specially in the arrangement of the songs. All The ideas, riffs or drums parts of a song presented by a member of the band are then elaborated by everyone. We have no deadlines , the final result must satisfy all of us to be declared over.

7.Who usually handles writing the lyrics for the music and what are some subjects the band writes about? Which usually comes first the music or the lyrics?

Usually I write all the lyrics and each time I submit my work to the judment of the other guys. Normally Lyrics are born first and than we adapt them to the music. Lyrics reflect our visions about the sick society we live in, our angry vision about to all that is leading the world to ruin, disinformation , media control, mind collapse and degeneration of the youth of today. Our hateful words try to wake up dead brains in this world that is going towards implosion. No zombie man eaters, no killer aliens from Mars, no demons from beyond. Cruel Reality , everyday problems, fighting for survive and our society in metastases are our lyrical themes.

8.Besides the upcoming EP. are the bands previous releases still availible for the readers to purchase?Besides physical releases does the band have any other merchandise currently availible to buy if yes what is availible and where can the readers purchase it?

All our previous works are available in physical copies and digital format at our bandcamp page or directly contacting us, as for t-shirts and hoodie. Feel free to contact us for every details and keep an eye to our social page (facebook, istagram) for the imminent realization of the new merchandise.

9.I know with the pandemic bands are not able to play live right now but what have been some of the bands most memorable shows over the years?Who are some bands you have shared the stage with?

I have great memories about a lot of gig, too many too mention but few remains special. Especially shows in Poland and across Europe ,Metal Days in 2015 in Tolmin (Slovenia) and a great concert for our tenth anniversary with old members of Chronic Hate and a lot of great bands and friends . We had the possibility to share the stage and open concerts for great bands like Destruction, Obituary, Impiety, Sadist, Fleshgod apocalypse, Disharmonic Orchestra, Severe Torture, Misery Index and many more... Great experience and great pleasure for us.

10.Marco you handle the bass duties for the band when did you first become interested in playing the bass?Who would you say are your favorite bass players?

I started play bass when I was 16 years old, therefore a little late compared to the average of young people who approach to a musical instruments. I always loved the sound of bass and that’s all. Only one name and a great influence for me: Mr. D.D. Verni from Overkill.

11.Besides the bass do you currently play any other instruments? Are their any instruments that you would like to learn to play someday?

I trying with bad results to play guitar but only for composition and one day I would like to approach to the drums.

12.Chronic Hate comes out of the Italian death metal scene what is your opinion of Italy's death metal scene over the years?

The Italian scene has grown a lot over the years and all our regions offer aggressive and prepared bands, too many too mantion. If in 2021 we talk about Italian Death metal we have to thank professional and respected band like Hour of penance, Fleshgod Apocalypse, Sadist , Antropofagus and many other ensemble who whit perseverance and sacrifice have brought the name of Italy abroad.

13.Who are your all-time favorite bands coming out of Italy and are their any new bands you could recomend to the readers?

My all-time favorite Italian metal bands are Death ss and Spite extreme wing. I can recommend Sententia Mortis the band of my friend Demon and his last great album ‘Untold abominations’, then Nova ,Psychotomy, Gates of doom, Idolatria, Sepolcral, Aganis, Azrath-11,Kryptonomicon and The Dead flowers graves, all bands from our area and very close to u

14.What does Underground Metal mean to you?

Underground metal for me is infinite passion and true attitude. In the underground you can find who screams their anger with nothing to loose.

15.When you need to take a break from working on new music or band business what do you like to do in your free time?

I am an insatiable devourer of music and I’m always looking for old or new albums to buy for my collection. In normal condition (no pandemic to waste our life!) I try to go to as many concerts as possible. For the rest in this ugly period I spent my time between work and house, I watch some good movies especially horrors, read some selected books and drink good beers.

16.Besides working in Chronic Hate do any of the members currently work with any other bands or solo projects?

Yes, Daniele and Aleksandar play in the Death metal band Sepolcral and I play bass in a new secret Heavy/Doom project . I also play in the Death metal band Psychotomy. Andrea have sung in the last album of Sententia Mortis and I gave my contribution by writing some lyrics.
