Interview with Bjorn guitarist of Mordbrand done by Patrick
1.Hello Bjorn please introduce yourself to the readers and at what age did you discover metal music?
I play guitars, bass and I'm the main songwriter of Mordbrand. I discovered rock and metal in my early childhood, but got more involved and fanatical about metal in my teens (I'd say around '95 or so). It all started with Guns 'n' Roses as a kid (ask any child of the early 80's) and things just got heavier and more aggressive as time passed.
2.Who were some of the first bands you listened to and who are some of your current favorites?
As above mentioned: Guns 'n' Roses was the gateway drug for me. Later on it was Iron Maiden, Metallica, Judas Priest and all the classic bands. Slayer, Sepultura and Morbid Angel later on opened my eyes to the more dark and sinister stuff. Today I wouldn't really say I have favorites since I listen to so much different music and so many bands. I constantly check out new stuff and search for that high that you get from discovering a new/old band that you haven't heard before. So many talented players out there and the competition is stiff nowadays, which is cool.
3.When did you first meet the other members of the band? And how did you all choose the name Mordbrand as the name of the band?
Me and Johan (Rudberg, drums) go way back. We've been in many bands together, so when we started out this band we just made some filthy death metal in the vein of Autopsy and Master, for kicks. The songs turned out pretty cool and was released on a split LP with Evoke on Me Saco Un Ojo Records in 2010. That lit something within us so we decided to stop messing around and turn this project into something more severe and serious. We asked Per (Boder, vocals) if he'd like to join since we knew that he's basically the best voice around. He unexpectedly said 'yes' and the rest is history. We truly aren't the same band today as we were 7 years ago, but the filth withstands.
4.What is the current line up of the band? and for the readers who have never heard Mordbrand's music how would you say it has changed since the beginning of the band until present day?
Me on strings, Per on vocals and Johan on drums. Well, the first split LP is sort of goofy but still raw with a punkish attitude. Today we are more focused on bringing atmosphere and a sense of danger into the sound. Every song should stand on it's own. It's not about finding the "right sound" - it's about making quality music that survives current trends.
5. Mordbrand is getting ready to release their second full-length "Wilt" how long did it take to write the music for this release?Does the whole band work on the music or does one member usually write everything?
We started writing the album in February last year and finished the recordings in november the same year. We worked very hard and went through a lot of trials in order to get it done. Everything that could've fucked up eventually did. But it came out just a great as we had hoped. We are tremendously proud of the result and we feel that it represents exactly what we strived to do and who we are as a band today. A melodic, atmospheric but crusty and deadly slab of metal. No fillers, just 9 songs that vary quite a bit from one another.
6.Who usually takes care of writing the lyrics and what are some topics the band wrote about on Wilt?
Per does all the lyrics and the theme on all of our releases (except for the earlier material) is about life's transformation. How life withers and dies and transforms into something new. Full circle.
7.What have been some of Mordbrand's most memorable shows over the years?Who were some of your favorite bands that you got to share the stage with?
We've only done one show thus far, back in 2012 (or was it 2013?) with Bombs of Hades and Terrorama. 2 great bands. We aim at doing more shows in the future and we have a lineup ready to do the heavy duty work.
8.Are their any upcoming tours or shows in support of Wilt if yes where will the band be playing?
Not yet. Unfortunately we've had to turn down cool offers due to lineup issues and family life, but we're confident things can be arranged sooner than later.
9.Bjorn you take care of the guitars for the band at what age did you become interested in playing the guitars?Did you take lessons when first starting out or are you self taught?
Around the same time I discovered the magic of music, basically. I was self-taught up until the age of 15 when I started highschool and had the chance to study music and guitar playing. I wouldn't say that the actual education was that much beneficial for me as a player, but it connected me with a new crowd of people and musical endeavors.
10.Who are some of your influences and favorite guitarists? Besides the guitars do you currently play any other instruments?
I really don't have favorite guitar players that inspire my own work with Mordbrand. I do what I know best and I try not to complicate stuff. But as a listener I'm a huge fan of Trey from Morbid Angel, Glenn Tipton of Judas Priest, Piggy (r.i.p.) from Voivod, Dave Murray from Iron Maiden and other godfathers of the genre.
11.Mordbrand comes out of Sweden's death metal scene what is your opinion of Sweden's metal scene over the years?
I think it's still intact and more varied than it used to be. You have the death metal veterans still going strong, the 'kill your idols' kind of youngsters like Degial and Tribulation, as well as a stable black metal "scene". Also there's great thrash to be found like Antichrist, which has a really promising new release coming out this year. Cool gigs are more and more common too, which is a sign of health I think.
12.Who are some of your all-time favorite Swedish bands? And are their any new bands you can recommend to the readers?
That's a hard question. Entombed, Marduk, Stillborn, Bathory and Candlemass are bands that I hold in very high regard, just to name a few from the top of my head. But the more current scene is vibrant and the bands are too many to mention (and too many will be left out, sadly).
But you'd do yourself a favour if you checked out the bands we've done split releases with: Bombs of Hades, Gravehill, Rite and Evoke. You can also find the cream of the crap on the Critical Mass collections (I think there's 3 thus far) that really tries to capture what's hot in the swedish underground.
13.Besides bands are their any honest and reliable labels or distro's you could recommend to the readers?
Yes. Carnal Records that will release "Wilt" is an example of that. A hardworking and honest label with a great set of bands on it's CV. To The Death Records we've had nothing but good experiences with. Same goes for Bifrost, Deathgasm, Doomentia and all the other labels that we've worked with. We've been very lucky in that sense.

Interview with Ross V. vocalist and bassist for Versifist done by Patrick
1.Hello Ross how are things going in Canada these days? Please introduce yourself to the readers?
Hello Patrick. Things are ok here in Canada. Its a very brutal winter here but we are used to it. Versifist is black metal trio from Canada formed in 2013. There is myself on bass/vox, Graham F. on guitars and Evan W. on drums
2.When did you first meet the other members of the band and was it long before you all formed the band?How did you all choose Versifist as the name of the band?
I have known Graham and Evan for about 20 years now. We met when I was playing in a local death metal act Terratomb and they were playing(and still are) with black/thrash demons Hellacaust. Eventually Graham joined Terratomb. When that band disbanded, not long after we started Versifist.
When coming up with the name I wanted something that was an original word, a creation so to speak, and its translation its based upon the theory of the spoken word or written word is a very powerful thing. It can start wars, it can end lives etc. Whether its the holy bible or the Quran, or Hitler speaking in front of thousands of starving pissed off Germans that wanted something more, or even a motivational speaker, the word can be indeed be mightier than the sword.
3.What is the current line up of the band? And for the readers who have never heard Versifist's music how would you best describe the band's style?
Versifist has a backbone made of molten black metal but we are not limited to any sub-genre.
4.Versifist is getting ready to release their newest EP. "Cipher" how long did it take the band to write the music for these songs? Does the whole band take part or does one member usually write everything?
Cipher has been out for close to a year now and we are very satisfied with the results. It is the next logical step from the "Scripting the Catechism" release. We tend to write slowly but when a song is done we know it. Quality over quantity is suppose. Versifist is a collaborative effort between the three members. We all write music.
5.Who usually writes the lyrics for the band and what are some subjects the band writes about?
Lyrics are usually between Graham and I. Lyrics are derived from all sources of inspiration including but not limited to, some occult themes, dealing with daily life, fictional stories of our own creation, nightmares/visions . The very definition of the name of the band requires that any subject is fair game. The only exception to that rule is we don't delve into politics i.e. left /right . All are worthless in our eyes so we'll leave that stuff to scum of the earth.
6.Has the band started working on new music for the next EP. or would you like to try to write enough songs for a full length?
We are writing for our first full length now.
7.Will the band work with the label Vault Of Dried Bones or have you and the label discussed it?
Yes, the Vault of Dried Bones is our home.
8.Besides the new EP."Cipher" does the band have any other releases or merchandise available for the readers.And if yes what is available and where can the readers buy it?
Our first release was the "Scripting the Catechism" cassette. The initial run of 100 tapes is sold out. We are awaiting a repress.

9.Ross you handle the vocals for the band at what age did you start growling and screaming? Is their anything special you do to keep your voice and throat healthy?Who are some of your influences and favorite vocalists?
I have been doing vocals in this style for about 20+ years off and on. The lack of touring means I don't do it often so no "tricks" to tell. My favorites are Pete Helmkamp (Angelcorpse O.F.C), Mark of the Devil(Cultes Des Ghoules), and Sir Proscriptor McGovern (Absu).
10.Besides the vocals you also take care of the bass when did you start playing the bass? Who are some of your favorite bass players?Besides the vocals and bass duties do you play any other instruments?
I started when I was 17. I am a bit of a "caveman" on the bass. I tend to keep it simple and try to lock in with Evan's kick drum and to free myself up for a powerful vocal delivery and to serve what the song needs instead of my ego. I dabbled with drums years ago but no more. Some bass greats are Steve Harris, Roger Patterson, Erik Danielsson, and whoever did the bass on the new Cultes Des Ghoules album.
11. Versifist comes out of the Canadian death,black metal scene what is your opinion of the Canadian metal scene over the years?
Canada has some the greatest metal bands in the world such as Voivod, Blasphemy, D.B.C., Sacrifice, and Revenge. I haven't paid to much attention to any "scene" in years but those are the some of great bands.
12.Who are your all-time favorite Canadian bands and are their any new bands you feel the readers should watch out for?
Answered above but local bands I would add are Thaumiel, Cottus and Novichok. All very different from each other but all worthy.
13.Besides bands are their any good labels or distro's you could recommend to the readers?
Again I don't pay a lot of attention except for in Versifist's world. The Vault of Dried Bones has a great distro with lots of great bands that we can stand proudly next too such as Sortilegia , Mitochondrion, Sorguinazia , Recluse, and Genocide Shrines. Also, Morbid Moon Records in Montreal is great distro/label.
14.In your opinion what is the best and worst thing about the underground scene today? And what does underground metal mean to you?
Probably the short attention span of people these days causes a lot of great bands to go unnoticed. Everything is a click away, so people take it for granted.(I suppose I am guilty of this as well) But I come from the days of tape trading and buying records cause the album art was great so it meant more when you saved up to buy that "cool looking" record. Sometimes the record sucked but when it didn't, there was some magic happening there.

1.Hello Jukka how are things going with you these days and please introduce yourself to the readers?Hello Patrick! Doing fine, thanks. I'm Jukka and I play guitar and mostly write the songs in Gorephilia.
2.At what age were you when you first got interested in playing the guitar?And are you self-taught or did you take lessons when first starting out?
I think I was 12 or 13 when I got my first guitar. It was a beat up Rockson or something. I strummed on my friends' guitars for a while before that. Never took any lessons.
3.Who are some of your influences and favorite guitarist? Besides handling the guitars do you currently play any other instruments?
Some of my favourite guitarists are Eddie Van Halen, Trey Azagthoth and Tony Iommi. I'm always more impressed by great songwriters than crazy shredders, but once in a while they come in the same package. Besides guitar I have a passion for drums. I actually started playing drums in my classroom during the recesses before I had even touched a guitar. Drums were a bit too expensive and I never had a place to play them at home. Fortunately I can now desecrate my bandmates' sets from time to time!
4.Gorephilia was formed in 2007 what gave you all the idea to start this band? And how did you all come up with the name of the band?
In 2006 we came up with this crazy idea of making old-school death metal with a western theme. The band was cleverly named GoretexX with an extra x to differentiate from the water resistant fabric. We got fed up with the concept quite fast and moved on to a bit more serious subjects. For some reason we kinda just tweaked the name and stuck with it after I did the logo.
5.What is the current line up of the band and for the readers who have never heard Gorephilia's music how would you best describe it?
Henu on the vocals, Kauko on drums, Tami on bass and Pauli and me on guitars. We play this thing called Death Metal.
6.Gorephilia is getting ready to release their second full-length "Severed Monolith" how long did it take to write the music for this release? Does the whole band take part in the writing process or does one member usually write everything? The writing took like 3-4 years and that was much too long for my liking. I'm satisfied with the end result, but I wish it came about faster. I write most of the music, but sometimes the songs are shaped further in the rehersal jams.
7.Who usually takes care of writing the lyrics and what are some subjects you all wrote about on the new release?
Henu, Tami and I all write. On this new album most of them were penned by me with Tami doing the text for two tracks. The new album is about death, nihilism and the deconstruction of the individual as a part of a whole and as a whole.
8.Besides the upcoming Severed Monolith release are their any copies of the debut still available besides the releases does the band have any other merchandise available for the readers? If yes where can the readers buy it from?

9.Do any of the members currently play in any other bands or projects if yes please tell the readers a little about them?

1.Hello Jukka how are things going with you these days and please introduce yourself to the readers?Hello Patrick! Doing fine, thanks. I'm Jukka and I play guitar and mostly write the songs in Gorephilia.
2.At what age were you when you first got interested in playing the guitar?And are you self-taught or did you take lessons when first starting out?
I think I was 12 or 13 when I got my first guitar. It was a beat up Rockson or something. I strummed on my friends' guitars for a while before that. Never took any lessons.
3.Who are some of your influences and favorite guitarist? Besides handling the guitars do you currently play any other instruments?
Some of my favourite guitarists are Eddie Van Halen, Trey Azagthoth and Tony Iommi. I'm always more impressed by great songwriters than crazy shredders, but once in a while they come in the same package. Besides guitar I have a passion for drums. Alexander: I am guitarist, founder band, death metal I began listen when I was young boy, at 10!!
Sergey: I am drummer, and I began at 10-12.

2.Who were some of the first brutal death bands you listened to? Who are some of your current favorite bands?
Alexander: old school bands 90-2000,and I listen to them now.
Sergey: It is difficult today now…definitely bands old school.Of the more famous this Deeds of Flesh
and Dying Fetus.
Igor: Bands old school : Pestilence, Melevolent Creation, of modern like Animals Killing People, Human Mincer, Orchidectomy, Foetopsy, Guttural Secrete.

Gorephilia come out of the Finnish death metal scene with their second full-length Severed Monolith.Featuring ten tracks of crushing powerful death metal that is extremely tight and well written.The guitars are played with mainly mid paced guitar patterns that have some well performed structures.The guitarist can and does play crazed,faster speeds that are really good.The drumming is equally as good played with both well performed and played mid paced drums to an all out assult of fast drumming patterns.The vocals are powerful death metal growls and even some gruff screams are used in a couple of the songs.If you love heavy death metal that is well written and performed then be sure to pick up Gorephilia new release soon.

Grave Plague--The Infected Crypts 7 Inch{Give Praise Rec.}
Coming out of the Cleveland Ohio old-school death metal scene is Grave Plague with their debut two song EP.The Infected Crypts.The first song is "Arise The Infected" combing both elements from the U.S and European death metal scenes.The guitar work is done with a lot of skill and changes going from a fast guitar pattern to a more mid tempoed heavy guitar pace.The drums are with precise and with a mix of well done faster drumming patterns but do slow to a more mid paced range in the middle of the song..The second track is "Halls Of The Rotten" which is in the same vein with a little more furious and fast paced guitars that really work for the band even mixing in some solo's into the song structure.The vocals are death metal growls with some screams mixed into the song.If you are a fan of European and U.S influences with the bands own style then be sure to check this band out today.

Poland's Hell's Coronation are a new band to my ears who play a raw,mid paced dark style of black metal.The guitars are played with a mix of mid paced guitars and slower almost doonmish guitar patterns used in a few of the songs.The guitarist knows how to write some good structures and patterns while maintaining the raw style and sound.The vocals are harsh black metal screams with some raspy type of vocals used in a few sections.If you are a fan of mid paced raw black metal with elements of doom then be sure to check out Hell's Coronation new ep.

1.Hails how is the new year starting off for you and the band? Please introduce yourself to the readers?
The new year just started as the last one – fucked up! Time was running rapidly, cause I fell behind with the album and so I had to finish songs and artwork until the 3rd of february 2017 while internally we had some pretty devastating bad news. Anyways, in the end everything went fine with the deadline and the album went into pressing just in time.
2.You all formed Streams Of Blood in 2009 when did you all get the idea to start this band?And what is the current line-up of the band?
I myself formed the project in Juli 2009. It became a real band when Tavor joined shortly thereafter. During the following years the line-up changed multiple times, you may have a look at metal-archives.com for the chronology (LINK).
The current line-up is fixed since 2015/2016 and is as follows:
Thymos – vocals, guitar
Wudur – guitar
Seroque – guitar
Solvex – bass
Terrorin - drums
3. Streams Of Blood is getting ready to release their third full length "Allgegenwartig" does the whole band take part in the writing process or does one member usually write everything?
Until this point I am composing the majority of the music on my own, later adding the drums during jam-sessions with the drummer.
4.What are some subjects the band wrote about on the mew release "Allgegenwartig" ?
"Allgegenwärtig" is about the ever-present that surrounds the Band, and the dissonating insights they gain. About life and death, light and darkness, excesses and spirtuality. It is Streams of Blood's inner voices roaring from the abysses of souls, fed by the chaos of the worlds.
5.Allgegenwartig is the bands third full length release how do you feel the bands music has changed over the years? And who are some of Streams Of Blood biggest influences?
The music changed in the way that I more and more found my own style of expressing myself. Arrangements and compositions became more thought out and coherent compared to the old stuff. The major influence still is life, its darkness, and death.
6.Besides the upcoming release are their any copies of the bands first two releases still available ? Besides the releases is their any other merchandise available for the readers and if yes what is available and where can the readers buy it?
The first two albums , Ultimate Destination and The Descent to the Scource of Disorder, are still available at a few shops and of course our own. 7.Does Streams Of Blood play live very often or do you prefer working in the studio? What have been some of the bands most memorable shows over the years?
We're playing like 10 shows on average per year. One of it especially stuck to my memory, it was the „Zeremonie der Schatten“ („Ceremony of shadows“) in 2016. Overwhelmingly intense show, the sound wasn't perfect, but the athmosphere of this evening was pretty unique, pure aggression and anger on stage and in the crowds. Another special moment was a gig in Arnheim – Netherlands, where we played a show prior to Mgla, Aosoth and DeusMortem. We had a short tour together with Deathrow and Ars Venificium through Belgium and the Netherlands at this time, and were lucky that the organizers managed to get us to play at this special occasion. Those days held great experience for all of us, and we met a bunch of bloody great guys!
8.Are their any upcoming shows or tours in support of Allgegenwartig if yes where will the band be performing and who are some bands you all will be sharing the stage with?
We're having our record-release show on the 25th of february together with Angelcorpse and The Committee in Berlin. Followed by a local, smaller gig to promote the album once again on the same weekend. In april we'll be sharing the stage with Inquisition, and in june/july we'll be playing at Under The Black Sun in Berlin with acts like Darkened Nocturn Slaughtercult, In the woods, Corpus Christii and some more. We've got some more shows confirmed for 2016 as well as 2017, not only nationally, but are not ready to release dates yet.
9.What does black metal mean to you?

Its a big, wide spread and diverse scene. I'm not as active and interested anymore as when I was younger. But I had a great time in the 2000s, and I won't forget this ever.

Accept, Bethlehem, Chaos Invocation, Darkened Nocturn Slaughtercult, Katharsis, Nagelfar and Sodom are all-time faves. I was very impressed by a recent release of an acquaintance, „Daubuz – In finstrer Teufe“.

1.Hails how is the new year starting off for you and the band? Please introduce yourself to the readers?
The new year just started as the last one – fucked up! Time was running rapidly, cause I fell behind with the album and so I had to finish songs and artwork until the 3rd of february 2017 while internally we had some pretty devastating bad news. Anyways, in the end everything went fine with the deadline and the album went into pressing just in time.
2.You all formed Streams Of Blood in 2009 when did you all get the idea to start this band?And what is the current line-up of the band?
I myself formed the project in Juli 2009. It became a real band when Tavor joined shortly thereafter. During the following years the line-up changed multiple times, you may have a look at metal-archives.com for the chronology (LINK).
The current line-up is fixed since 2015/2016 and is as follows:
Thymos – vocals, guitar
Wudur – guitar
Seroque – guitar
Solvex – bass
Terrorin - drums
3. Streams Of Blood is getting ready to release their third full length "Allgegenwartig" does the whole band take part in the writing process or does one member usually write everything?
Until this point I am composing the majority of the music on my own, later adding the drums during jam-sessions with the drummer.
4.What are some subjects the band wrote about on the mew release "Allgegenwartig" ?
"Allgegenwärtig" is about the ever-present that surrounds the Band, and the dissonating insights they gain. About life and death, light and darkness, excesses and spirtuality. It is Streams of Blood's inner voices roaring from the abysses of souls, fed by the chaos of the worlds.
5.Allgegenwartig is the bands third full length release how do you feel the bands music has changed over the years? And who are some of Streams Of Blood biggest influences?
The music changed in the way that I more and more found my own style of expressing myself. Arrangements and compositions became more thought out and coherent compared to the old stuff. The major influence still is life, its darkness, and death.
6.Besides the upcoming release are their any copies of the bands first two releases still available ? Besides the releases is their any other merchandise available for the readers and if yes what is available and where can the readers buy it?
The first two albums , Ultimate Destination and The Descent to the Scource of Disorder, are still available at a few shops and of course our own. So you may contact us, find them online or at the vendors of mostly german concerts and festivals. But I know that the remaining stock is limited and already running out. 7.Does Streams Of Blood play live very often or do you prefer working in the studio? What have been some of the bands most memorable shows over the years?
We're playing like 10 shows on average per year. One of it especially stuck to my memory, it was the „Zeremonie der Schatten“ („Ceremony of shadows“) in 2016. Overwhelmingly intense show, the sound wasn't perfect, but the athmosphere of this evening was pretty unique, pure aggression and anger on stage and in the crowds. Another special moment was a gig in Arnheim – Netherlands, where we played a show prior to Mgla, Aosoth and DeusMortem. We had a short tour together with Deathrow and Ars Venificium through Belgium and the Netherlands at this time, and were lucky that the organizers managed to get us to play at this special occasion. Those days held great experience for all of us, and we met a bunch of bloody great guys!
8.Are their any upcoming shows or tours in support of Allgegenwartig if yes where will the band be performing and who are some bands you all will be sharing the stage with?
We're having our record-release show on the 25th of february together with Angelcorpse and The Committee in Berlin. Followed by a local, smaller gig to promote the album once again on the same weekend. In april we'll be sharing the stage with Inquisition, and in june/july we'll be playing at Under The Black Sun in Berlin with acts like Darkened Nocturn Slaughtercult, In the woods, Corpus Christii and some more. We've got some more shows confirmed for 2016 as well as 2017, not only nationally, but are not ready to release dates yet.

1.Hello please introduce yourself to the readers?And at what age did you become interested in playing music?
My name is Zuberoa and I’m a singer, flutist and composer from Spain.
Music is a very important part of my life since I can remember, so I couldn’t tell exactly. I come from a family of musicians and I’ve been singing my whole life. I started singing in the choir my mother conducted when I was a child. Then I started to study flute and guitar when I was 8 years old so I wasn’t really conscious about my capacity or not to do music. I think I realized that later, when I was around 20. I remember the first time I joined a band, I was 18 and a friend of mine convinced me to apply as a singer in a rock band. I didn’t want to because I was very shy, but the band convinced me. Until then, I just sang in choirs and studied music, but I had never thought about joining a band. My “metal” career started by chance. I just was a metal fan, but no more than that. Back then I was singing in a rock band and then a metal band (Dragon Lord) called me to record some choirs. They liked the result and asked me to join the band as main singer. This was my first contact with a metal band as a singer. After this I started to compose songs and then decided to found my own band and that’s how Diabulus in Musica was born.
2.When did you first meet the other members of the band and how did you all choose Diabulus In Musica as the band name?
I met Gorka in Dragon Lord. He was the keyboard player. When The band split up I proposed him to start a new project. I had already written some songs that I showed to him. He liked the idea and we searched for new members. They were some other musicians friends we already knew. The lineup has changed since then (except for Gorka and me), but all the members are friends we knew from the local scene.
Regarding the name, it was me who chose it when I started the project. “Diabulus (or Diabolus) in Musica” is a Latin mediaeval word which means ‘the devil in music’. It was like that as they called the triton or the interval of the augmented fourth. The medieval ear was used to hearing perfect fourths and perfect fifths, (early music instruments are tuned different, in meantone tuning). The augmented fourth, being half-way between these two most common intervals, was about the worst discord imaginable. That’s why they thought that the devil was inside the triton.
The reason I chose this name was because of my music studies and my passion for Early Music. I studied classical signing but I’ve been above all focused in Historical singing. The name was perfect for us not only because of the meaning it has to me, but also because it sounds a bit dark, as our music sometimes. We like this ‘dark romantic aesthetic’ as well as Early Music (actually we have included these elements in our music more than once), so we thought Diabulus in Musica was the name that fit us the best.
3.Diabulus In Musica is getting ready to release their fourth cd "Dirge For The Archons" how long did it take the band to write the music for this release?Does the whole band take part in the writing process or does one member usually write everything?
It’s usually me who writes most of the music. In general, I write the whole song and then if the rest of the members think they can improve their instruments they do and if not it stays as it was. For this record, the rest of the guys have also written some tracks, generally riff structures, then it’s me the one who writes the vocal-lines and most of the “classical” arrangements. Gorka is the one who makes the job of a producer, deciding how the song works better and making the final structures. He usually works in the orchestral arrangements with me.
Anyway, I love when the guys write some structures because it is always challenging to put the “melodic” elements in a base you haven’t done. I think it’s richer than making everything oneself. Besides, the guitar and bass-player come from the death metal and metal core scene, so that makes our songs even more interesting. I personally like very much that mix between those styles of metal and the symphonic part, so I hope we can work this way for more songs in the future.
4.Who usually writes the lyrics for the band and what are some topics you all write and sing about on "Dirge For The Archons"?
It’s me who writes the lyrics. I talk about different topics, but there are some that I usually repeat: nature is always very present, psychology and philosophy as well, nowadays social issues and personal feelings are probably on my top. I sometimes use mythology as a metaphor too.
In the case of this album and its title, the Archons were the governors of a province in the classical Mediterranean world, but there is also a second meaning to the archons. According to some cosmologic theories, they are an alien force that intrudes subliminally upon the human mind and deviates our intelligence away from its proper and sane applications. In short, Archons here are representing control and mind manipulation over humans. With this title we claim for freedom and consciousness. The control systems (governments, multinationals…) are constantly playing with us and it seems we are not aware about it.
Also, most of the songs in this album are talking about perception. We humans are limited by only five senses to perceive all we have around (a perception that can also be manipulated by other factors, here the Archons), but these five senses are just physical… And what about our spiritual condition? We are losing this capacity and I think that’s very dangerous and one of the reasons why the world is getting so scary.
5.As mentioned "Dirge For The Archons" is Diabulus In Musica fourth release how do you feel the bands music has changed over the years?
I suppose the music is more mature now. We have grown with the band and the band with us. When we recorded our first album, we just wanted to do something good and work hard to achieve a high quality result. We had our music in our minds, but mixing all those elements (orchestra, choir and metal) was not easy sound-wise. That was our main obsession back then. We could have never imagined that our first album would be distributed worldwide. We actually had never thought what would come later, but once we got signed we couldn’t stop making more music. We are very passionate about it and very restless: we always want to improve and learn more and more and that’s actually what we have been doing with all the releases. We do everything by ourselves (except the mixing and mastering), we work as composers, sound engineers, producers, arrangers… So we are very proud of all we have learnt and achieved through all these years. The good thing is that we never get bored and we have always something new in mind that allows us to write more stuff and experiment with new sounds. I guess we will keep on evolving and trying to learn and search for new sounds in the future too.
6.Are their any tours or shows planned in support of the new release and if yes where are some countries the band will be playing?
Yes! We are very excited about the upcoming tour. Our label mates Amberian Dawn and us, we are celebrating our 10th anniversary and we are starting an European tour This Friday 10th (February). We’ll play ten dates in UK, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands and Switzerland.
7.What are some of your most memorable shows over the years and who are some bands you have shared the stage with?
There have been a lot! We enjoy live shows very much so each show is special. We love big festivals but also small club shows, as it allows us to have a more direct contact with the audience. One of the most special shows for us is the one we played last year in the main opera house of our city, with a full symphonic orchestra and big choir. We were 100 people on stage! One of our dreams came true because our music is conceived to be played that way, even if it’s not always possible to do so and we usually have to take the choir and orchestra recorded. It was fantastic!
We have shared stage with many great bands. We supported Manowar in Spain, Tarja in Belgium or Theatre of Tragedy in their farewell show in Mexico to name a few. Of course in metal festivals we have had the chance to share stage with many others: Doro, Arch Enemy, Cradle of Filth, Lacuna Coil, Therion…
8.Does the band have any plans to make a video for any of the songs off the new cd? If you could make a video for any of the bands songs which ones would you like to see made into a video?
We recorded one for “Invisible”. I personally would have loved to make another one also for “Ring around Dark fairies’ Carousel”, but it should be a very special one. For this song I was inspired by D. Elfmann and Tim Burton films so I would love to make a video in that style. Of course that would be really expensive to do, so not possible for now

10.When not working on new music or band business what do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I personally have very little time as I spend most of it working on music. Apart from Diabulus in Musica I have my solo project (Zuberoa Aznárez, ambient-folk music) and the folk trio Dryades as well as my classical projects and teaching. My other passion is Nature. I really enjoy hiking, trekking and climbing, so when I have the chance I run to the mountains. I also do natural soaps as a hobby. I like reading, yoga… In general I’m a very active person who loves to do quite a few bunch of things!
