Morgue Meat interview done on 6-10-24

1.Hello Sergio how are things in Texas these days? Please introduce yourself to the readers?

Texas is currently being ravaged by tornados and flash floods but it's perfect weather for song writing. As for an introduction, my name is Sergio Alvarenga, founding member of Morgue Meat. I'm originally from San Miguel, El Salvador but relocated to Dallas, TX at 6 years old.

2.When did you first discover brutal death metal and what is it about this genre that you love so much?

I first discovered brutal death metal in 2008 when I was 13 years old. My first brutal death metal song was Ebolic Regurgitation by Prophecy, and since then I've been a fan of the genre.

3.Who were the first bands that caught your attention?Who are some of the current bands that you have been listening to?

Early on I was a big fan of the Texas Death Metal bands I saw at the first TXDM fest. Ebola Zaire, Blood Stained Carpet, Disfigured, and Scattered Remains to name a few. Currently I am enjoying a lot of the music put out by Nuclear War Now! productions and select "War" Metal bands .

4. Sergio you formed Morgue Meat in 2010 what gave you the idea to start this band? Are you happy with how things have gone over the years?

The band was started after my initial project Necronomic dissolved with early collaborator Christian Benitez, he went on to form Assassinator and I put together Morgue Meat with Manuel Velazquez on drums. I am definitely happy with what we have achieved as a band and looking forward to the future of the band.

5.Who would you say are the bands biggest influences and have they stayed the same over the years? For the readers who have never heard Morgue Meat's music how would you best describe the bands musical style?

The band's biggest influences are Dying Fetus, Down From The Wound, and Archgoat. The band's early influences leaned more towards the slamming brutal side with blackened elements being added on later on.

6.Apocalyptic Visions is the band's second full length. How long did it take the band to write the music for the new release?Does the whole band work on the music or does one member usually write everything?

The first half of the album was written in 2017 with 4 songs being released as the EP "Realm of Eternal Suffering" the other 5 songs were written in 2022 after a burst of inspiration after playing a few solo shows in Asia. The songs are usually written by me using Reaper DAW then presented to the rest of the band to make adjustments but we are moving towards a more collaborative process for future projects.

7.Besides the new Apocalyptic Visions are the band's past releases still available for the readers to purchase?Besides physical releases does the band have any other merchandise currently available? If yes, what is available and where can the readers purchase it?

Our first album "Mutilation in The Chapel '' is available for purchase via Hells Headbangers and we also have a merch store through Big Cartel for apparel.

8.Has Morgue Meat played very many live shows over the years or do you prefer working in the studio? What have been some of the bands most memorable shows?Who are some bands you have shared the stage with?

We have played quite a few shows since our first in 2012 and prefer playing live than being in the studio. Our most memorable show would be the first time we played in Tokyo, Japan back in 2019, the show was played as a two piece but it was still very powerful. The most memorable bands we have shared the stage with would be Lust of Decay, Opposition Party, The Ironfist, and MayhemFancy.

9.Are there any shows or tours in support of the new release Apocalyptic Visions? If yes, where will the band be playing?

We are currently working on an east coast US tour to support the album but nothing we can disclose just yet.

10.Morgue Meat comes out of the Texas brutal death metal scene. What is your opinion of the scene in Texas over the years?

The Texas scene has certainly been influential in the death metal world, with bands like Devourment refining the Slamming Death Metal genre and Frozen Soul spearheading the rebirth of the genre. It's certainly an honor to be part of such a prolific scene.

11.Who are your all-time favorite bands coming out of Texas? Are there any new bands that you could recommend to the readers?

My favorite all time bands coming out of Texas would be At The Drive-In and The Mars Volta but if you're looking for death metal recommendation I would recommend Dysmorphia, ParanoiaTX, and Basement Burial who are leading the Hardcore Death Metal movement in their respective cities.

12.Besides working in Morgue Meat do any of the members currently work with other bands or solo projects? If yes please tell the readers a little about them?

We are solely dedicated to Morgue Meat but have all worked on various black metal and thrash projects with Judas Goat being the project that brought most the current lineup together.

13.Sergio you handle the guitars for the band. When did you first become interested in playing the guitars? Are you self taught or did you take lessons when first starting out?

I first became interested in guitar at the age of 9 after watching a VH1 documentary on the Monterey Pop Festival, seeing Hendrix light his guitar on fire ignited the passion for guitar. I am self taught and have never taken lessons.

14.Who would you say are your influences and favorite guitarists?Do you play any other instruments?

My influences are Jimi Hendrix, Paul Gilbert, Joe Pass, and Paco De Lucia. I also play bass, keyboard, and drums.

15.You also handle the vocals for the band. When did you first start growling and singing?Do you do anything special to keep your throat and voice healthy? Who are some of your favorite vocalists?

I started growling at the age of 13, I stay hydrated and usually avoid dairy before shows to reduce phlegm. I have asthma so staying fit and healthy is key for maintaining my vocals. My favorite vocalists are John Gallagher, Chuck Shuldiner, and Muhammed Suicmez.

16.When you need to take a break from working on new music or band business what do you like to do in your free time?

I'm an avid fisherman in my free time and also have a career in technology.

17.Sergio thank you for taking the time to fill this interview out. Do you have any final comments for the readers?

Thank you for your time and for taking interest in the band. golgaborg interview conducted by Jay posted on 6-8-24

Today I’m talking to Count Morthos from Gølgaborg, a one man DSBM band

based in Aberdeen, Washington USA.

Hi man, thanks for taking time out of your busy schedule to talk to our readers…

1- Tell us about Gølgaborg.. when/where/why did you decide to form the band?

It was sometime in December of 2021. I had already been writing songs at this point, but I had so many ideas that didn’t really conform to the genres I was listening to at the time, I was listening to bands like Metallica, Megadeth, Cannibal Corpse, lots of thrash and death metal as well as numerous punk bands. Then one day I left Youtube on autoplay, and Burzum’s Dunkelheit started playing, and it opened my eyes and ears to a whole new sound. It sent me on a black metal rabbithole of sorts. I connected with this style of music on a deeper level than any other thing I’ve heard before.

2- From where do you draw the inspiration for your lyrics and music?

I think I get inspiration from many things. Usually feelings from a personal experience or thoughts that I have, processing a traumatic experience, negative emotions… I tend to write a lot about feelings of being trapped, isolated, forgotten. My nightmares often involve being trapped in a realm I can’t escape, being tormented by figures of my own psyche. This is probably because of some fucked up shit I went  through in my past… A lot of the time Nature, the night, and looking to the outdoors inspires the same feeling of creative energy that I get from listening to black metal. I will say, it usually all comes back to darkness… I believe darkness and pain tends to inspire most of the best art.

3- Run us through the new album, which is being released on double CD in July, Suicide & Misanthropy, and the new single, Dejected…

I consider Suicide & Misanthropy to be my first good album. many of my previous releases were recorded and mixed poorly, and to me, not in a good “true kvlt” way. S&M was the first album I was actually proud of! I don’t really think I can add anything else, I feel that the album and single are self-explanatory.

4- Tell us about your other Eps and albums, which as I understand,

will be released later this year on physical formats…A lot of the older recordings I’ve made were recorded using only what I had at my disposal at the time. I had to record everything with a cellphone!

5- Tell us about the new stuff you’re working on…

Most of the stuff I’ve been working on lately is a lot more dissonant and fucked up than much of my past material. I’ve been experimenting more with the instrumentation, using different synths, implementing clean tones. I always want to try something differently than I’ve done before, you know? Like sometimes I find myself feeling like I’m  following the same black metal cliches when in the process of writing  sometimes, so trying something unconventional or having a different approach can help with my creative process.

6- Gølgaborg has grown quickly over the last few months and has been very well received by fans and critics alike… what are your plans and expectations for the future? Have you thought of forming a full band and perhaps playing live?

As for my plans for the future, I want to continue to make music for as long as I can, and continue to progress and evolve my own sound further. Maybe I’ll make a thrash album someday! As for forming a full band, I’m not so sure. I find solace and peace when recording by myself. I don’t have to talk to anyone, listen to bullshit, its almost like I don’t even have to think. When working with other people as a full band, creative differences tend to clash, and if you’re the frontman, you have to worry about directing everyone. And from my experience, that’s a pain in the ass. I’ve played in bands with several less experienced peers who are always trying to be the “leader”. They all seem to want to always be Kurt Cobain. Like, when the drummer is bossing everyone around like he’s the fucking singer it makes me want to rip my hair out and stab someone! Like, what the fuck is that? I’ve played live as Gølgaborg one time. It was an alright show, nothing groundbreaking. I may play live again in the future, if I’m not to lazy to create mounds of backing tracks!

7- Tell about your arsenal of instruments and the writing/recording process for your music…

My main guitar I record with is a black Epiphone Flying V, my favorite

out of all of them. My second “axe in command” is a Jay Turser JT-220D (Les Paul shape). I’ve also got a really sick vintage BC Rich Warlock that I sometimes record with. I’ve covered it in stickers… I KNOW, why don’t you crucify me? My bass is a black Ibanez Gio Soundgear, a good basic model, no pun intended. I also have two acoustic guitars, ones a very old Airline guitar that’s pretty beat up, Its probably older than myself. The other is an old Honer guitar. When It comes to writing, I usually have an idea in mind of what I  want the song to sound like. I’ll have a few riffs ready, then I write the lyrics, although sometimes I record the whole instrumental first, then write the lyrics to the track. When recording the guitars, I will record three rhythm tracks (one panned 100% left, one 100%right, one up the center), Then I’ll record the bass guitar. After bass I record two more guitars as the melody/harmonizing parts (one panned 60-70% left, the other right).

8- Which bands inspired you to become a musician? Which bands are

you listening to these days?

When I first heard Nirvana’s In Utero, I was inspired to start playing guitar. Believe it or not, I am a Nirvana fan. Then my dad gave me Metallica’s Ride The Lightning, and I instantly fell in love with metal. It all just progressed from there.Nowadays I’ve been listening to a lot of bands I’ve just discovered. For the black metal stuff, I’ve been listening to a lot of Xasthur,Durbataluk, Nocturnal Depression, Burzum (like always, literally one of my top favorites), Shining, My Useless Life, Abyssic Hate, Leviathan, NONE, Anti, Decalius, to name a few. I could go on and on. Dead Can Dance has been catching my ear a lot as well.

9- As a part of the ever growing and ever evolving new wave of post pandemic Black Metal, the so called ‘Plague Generation’, how do you compare the new bands and new genres to the so called ‘classic’ and ‘traditional’ sounds from the 80s/90s?

I find some of the newer bands lacking a certain rawness and fuzziness

that I like. On the other hand, many of them try so hard to sound raw that they end up sounding like absolute shit! The colder sounding the better, in my opinion, as long as it isn’t too “posey” or over the top.

10- What is the scene like there in Washington USA? Recommend some local bands for our readers to check out…

The metal scene here is dry and bland. There are 0 even remotely black metal bands in my area. The closest black metal band to me in Washington is Decalius, who I believe lives in Seattle. Alternatively,

there is a good solid punk and grunge scene here in Aberdeen, many good bands. I would recommend the band Clear Nothing if you’re into metal driven punk rock.

11- What are your top 5 albums of all time?

Hard question! If I had a gun to my head I would say it would be

Burzum’s Filosofem, Abyssic Hate’s Suicidal Emotions, Nirvana’s In Utero, Metallica’s …And Justice For All!, Emperor’s In The Nightside Eclipse.

12- What advice would you give to other young and up and coming

musicians looking to follow in your footsteps? Keep practicing, keep recording, and don’t stop. You will find your own process and way of doing things musically. Also Keep an open mind, sometimes the most “un-metal” things can inspire you to write anything. Sometimes folk music inspires me to play black metal.

13- Would you like to add anything for our readers?

Thank you for having me, and thank you for giving me the time of day and hearing what I have to say. Thanks to Count Morthos!!                                                                                                                          golgaborg                                                                                                                                                       https://glgaborg.bandcamp.com/                                                                                                                   https://www.facebook.com/people/G%C3%B8lgaborg/61556635868899/                                                  https://www.youtube.com/@countmorthos                                                                                                 Masters Of Kaos Prod.                                                                                                                                  https://mastersofkaos.bandcamp.com/album/g-lgaborg-usa-suicide-misanthropy                                      https://www.facebook.com/people/Masters-Of-Kaos-Productions/100083264766354/                             https://www.instagram.com/mastersofkaosrecords/                                                                                     https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJ5mrPBaMgDuGn71cyYWpbw

Interview with Kaivs posted on 6-5-24

When did you first discover death metal music and what is it about this genre that drew you in?

Max "During the '80's with Sepultura and Death, then Morbid Angel, Carcass, Autopsy, Napalm Death, Cannibal corpse and Obituary came to take the pace with Dismember, Grave, unleashed, Entombed and Carnage in Europe after all the thrash wave!".

Jacopo "My first approach with death metal was with Children of Bodom, I have never had a hard approach with this genre, it was mostly just...well, amateur. But during these years I managed to explore more, and luckily so!".

Tiziano "It happened a long time ago when I was 19 or 20, I went to my first music school for leaning guitar indeed and there, I met a guy who introduced me bands like Death. I didn’t know death metal before and get started right with them was a bit difficult, understanding this genre at first hear I mean, but time after time and discovering much bands as possible I become to appreciate it".

Who were the first bands that you listened to?Who are some of the current bands that have caught your attention?

Jacopo "Well, I started with the classic bands like Metallica or Slayer, just like everyone I suppose. Currently I'm so involved with Kanonenfieber and Gaerea!"

Tiziano "Uhm, actually it tooks a while to find something that captured me, I always like doom metal and the first ones were bands like Asphyx, Winter and stuff like that including early Anathema and Paradise Lost too, because of their slow and decaying mood. Then, I approached to the first Entombed songs, Gorefest, Autopsy and so on. About the current ones I’ll go with Necrot, Undeath, Tomb Mold, Lik, Undergang, Mortuous and Morbific".

Max "Surely one between Iron Maiden and Metallica, then Saxon, Judas Priest and Black Sabbath as for Led Zeppelin, Ac/Dc, Kiss and Black Sabbath, The Who, Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra and Peter Frampton".

When did you first meet the other members of the band? And was it long before you formed Kaivs ?How did you choose Kaivs as the name of the band does it have a special meaning?

Max "We all knew each other for previous experiences, especially me and Jacopo who met at gigs as performers or between the audience. Then I quickly got in touch with Tiziano, as Leonardo joined because he was in touch with Jacopo and he easily joined the band mainly for this reason".

Jacopo "I've been knowing Max for years but never talked with him very much! I've been playing with Leonardo in other projects, but then we went on other ways, and I met Tiziano in the summer of 2022 when we founded the band! Kaivs takes the name from the villain of the second act of Hokuto no Ken, which I'm a huge fan of!".

Tiziano "I initially met Max Foam in June or July '22, we spoke about the band to create and I found it interesting so I decided to join, after that I had a meeting with Max and the others who were already in".

Who would you say are Kaivs biggest influences I hear a variety of death metal groups? And for the readers who have never heard the band how would you best describe the musical style of Kaivs?

Max "Surely all the early Stockholm death metal rampage!".

Tiziano "Since the first rehearsals we had together, our influences quickly moved to an HM-2 Swedish sound which certainly had a foundamental part in the songwriting process. Well, our style is indeed a simple and well played death metal having the rotten and dirtier sound possible, mirroring what probably are the same bands you listed and you heard in our music: Entombed, Bolt Thrower, Lik, Dismember, etc. I think these are the most recognizable in our songs".

Horrend is the debut that was self released would you like to find a label to work with or do you prefer to self release your music?

Max "We'll in release the full-length for Brutal Records! Do it yourself is great, but it disadvantages you in terms of visibility, for doing that you have to give up with your job and I can't!".

Jacopo "Michael (the owner) is a fantastic person and we are so proud of working with him and his team!".

How long did it take the band to write the music for the debut release? Does the whole band take part in the writing process or does one member usually writes everything?

Max "In half of a year we got eight songs for the record, then three were for Horrend and reprised for the album. We're very quick to write an arrange, Tiziano gets all under control as I do for the lyrics".

Tiziano "The songwriting didn’t take so long as we expected and that’s was quite surprising, each song comes out naturally and in very few time from the previous, we do not had dead periods from that point of view. I made all the guitar riffs and Max wrote all the lyrics".

Jacopo "Generally one of us brings an idea at rehearsals and we study together its anatomy, and only when we are fully convinced on how the song sounds we can call it a day, mainly because we are listeners before musicians! For "Horrend" it took about 2-4 months to complete the songs and record them, we still are pretty confident with the results!".

If anyone is interested where can they purchase the debut cd? Does the band have any other merchandise currently available at this time? If yes what is availible and where can the readers purchase it?

Max "Search us on Bigcartel, it's all there!".

Has Kaivs played any live shows yet or do you prefer to work in the studio? What have been some of the most memorable shows so far?

Max "Just for myself i like both: writing new songs, rehearse and record, but the best thing are the shows: different approach and possibility to travel in the world!".

Jacopo "Playing live, to me, is the key core of a band. The atmosphere, the people, the rush of adrenaline... makes it too special for not to play. We love rehearsals, but  playing live is a whole other story which we are heavily focused to".

Are there any tour or shows planned in support of the new release?

Jacopo "We have some gigs scheduled and soon they'll be revelaed! In due time a tour will come, it's a matter of organization".

Max "European tour in in store to support the album, but don't ask me where and when: we gotta ask our label for that! Single shows, dates and festivals too".

Tiziano "The very next one will be in Milan in September, and it’s gonna be crazy..."-

Max "Oh yeah, a festival with 4 or 5 bands!".

Tiziano "We hope to arrange an European tour for the beginning of 2025".

Have you all started working on new music for the next demo or would you like to work on a full length?

Max "New songs are ready, maybe we'll start in the next months of during the summer to practice them, I don't know as it's still too early for that!".

Jacopo "We know that our riffmaster Tiziano has lots and lots of stuff in his lab and can't wait what he will show us! New music is now on hold, but I'm pretty sure not for so long".

Tiziano "We have already worked on a full length, it will be relesed this year".

What does underground metal mean to you?

Max "Basically it's all where all the bands come from before facing the commercial aspect, that is where all is set and done for the bands in a certain way to become professional".

Jacopo "The underground environment is a pulsing nexus of live wires: I have to be honest, there are some bands which are pretty much strong, I like them and wish them the best! But I can also say that, dude, it's a crawlspace: we are so many, but in the meanwhile we are distant. I love the scene but it needs to be more cohesive, more genuine... at least here in Italy!".

Kaivs comes out of Italy's death metal scene what is your opinion of the scene in Italy over the years?

Max "Cool!".

Jacopo "In the last few years, Italy has been a great cradle of very awesome bands, but the hard truth is that they are the very few that put their head out of the water surface. We haven't well equipped venues, too much personal interests over genuinity, and also there is no mutual support whastoever, beyond the very rare cases. It kills me man".

Who are your all-time favorite bands coming out of Italy? Are their any new bands you could recomend to the readers to check out soon?

Max "Extrema, Bulldozer, Necrodeath and Death SS from those the audience could know, then there're too much from the underground!".

Jacopo "Well I'm a huge fan of Rhapsody! (The old ones) I basically grew up with them! But also smaller realities like Furor Gallico, Draugr, Selvans and Black Faith! Love me some Italian black metal!".

When you need to take a break from working on new music or band's business, what do you enjoy doing on your free time?

Max "I always work, my only luxury is to sleep sometime!".

Tiziano "I would rather take a break from my job, that’s really stressful not working on music ahah Anyway, I’ll say movies, some videogames, concerts, walking and relaxing".

Jacopo "Well, other than working in a pretty good job, my way of relaxing is made of Magic The Gathering Cards or D&D dices! But my mind's always connected to the project, you just can't turn off a musician that is proud of his work!".                                                                                                             Kaivs                                                                                                                                                             https://kaivs.bigcartel.com/                                                                                                                           https://www.facebook.com/kaivsofficial                                                                                                    https://www.instagram.com/kaivsband/                                                                                                         https://www.youtube.com/@kaivs

Morgue Meat--Apocalyptic Visions cd{Satanath Rec/Pest Rec.} Posted on 6-1-24

Coming out of Dallas Texas is Morgue Meat that plays a brutal death metal style that is done with great song writing ability.Apocalyptic Visions is the second full length featuring nine tracks of uncomprimising brutality at it's finest. The guitars are played with a skill with both some extremly fast paced guitars and some heavier mid paced passages. The guitarist does a great job of performing both the fast and mid paced. The guitarist does write some memorable guitar patterns and some really well executed solo's through the release. The drumming is done with some extremly fast and chaotic drum passages. The drummer does slow to a heavier mid paced range with some crushing mid paced drums as well as the more chaotic fast drumming. The vocals are deep death metal growls that are intense in their delievery.Their are also some raw screams that are used in some of the songs that fit the music.Morgue Meat is a new band to my ears but i hope to hear more releases in the future. If you are a fan brutal, vicious death metal then do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of Apocalyptic Visions today you won't be disapointed.                                                                                                                              Morgue Meat                                                                                                                                                 https://morguemeat.bandcamp.com/album/apocalyptic-visions-2                                                               https://www.facebook.com/MorgueMeat                                                                                                     https://www.instagram.com/morguemeattx/                                                                                                 Satanath Records.                                                                                                                                         https://www.satanath.com/                                                                                                                           https://satanath.bandcamp.com/album/sat377-morgue-meat-apocalyptic-visions-2024                             https://www.facebook.com/grimmdistribution                                                                                           https://www.instagram.com/satanathrecords/                                                                                             https://www.youtube.com/user/satanath666                                                                                                Pest  Records                                                                                                                                                 https://pestrecords.limitedrun.com/                                                                                                              https://pestrecords.bandcamp.com/album/morgue-meat-apocalyptic-visions                                             https://www.facebook.com/pestrecords                                                                                                        https://www.instagram.com/pest.records/
