1. Hello please introduce yourselves to the readers?
Hello sickos! This is Cercenatory and my name is Gerson Puello, usually known as Gers or GersGrind. I'm the bands drummer. It's a pleasure to give this interview.\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\
2. When did you first discover brutal death metal music and who were the first bands that you listened to? Who are some of the current bands that you have been listening to?
I (Gerson) remember discovering BDM when I was getting off school, the first bands I remember listening to are Dying Fetus, Nile, Cannibal Corpse, Suffocation, Devourment, Pustulated, Deeds Of Flesh, Brodequin, Liturgy, Cinerary, Disgorge, Lividity, a lot of Colombian brutality like Internal Suffering, Pyaemia, Goretrade, Carnal, Carnivore Diprosopus, Amputated Genitals, among many others. Fernando, Adolfo and David are old listeners as well, we pretty much listen to the same kind of bands. We still listen to the bands I mentioned, among other bands like Defeated Sanity, Amagortis, Enmity, Disentomb, Cerebral Effusion, Vomit Remnants, Excoriation, Prostitute Disfigurement, Inveracity, Asphyxiate, Bleeding Corpse, Cadavoracity, Despondency, Putrid Pile, Inherit Disease... there are so many bands, we are good listeners of extreme music and we listen to everything we can even from old school death metal to the most extreme.
3. When did you first meet the other members of the band and was it long before you all formed Cercenatory? How did you all choose Cercenatory as the name of the band does it have a special meaning?
Our city is really not a brutal city. BDM wasn't that popular when we first met, so it was easy to find the right people going to the few shows we had there. I first met Fernando, who I started the band with and we became good friends because even though he is older and one of the firsts in the city to listen to extreme music, we liked a lot of the same bands. Then I met Adolfo, because I was getting drum lessons from band drummer (Mesentherio, later Incinerating Prophecies), however we did not become friends until later on. Lastly, I met David, he used to play for a Thrash metal band called Morbid Ritual and we recruited him to play with us. We really became good friends and we still are, to us Umi's essential to be friends in order to play in the same band, we strongly believe that being good people comes before being a musician.
4. What is the current lineup of the band?
The current lineup is Gerson (drums), David (guitar), Fernando (vocals) and Adolfo (bass). I'm glad have found these guys to keep doing what we love, especially David who has been with me since we started and it's great to have Fernando back in the band since he is also a founder. He actually named the band and I carried it when he had to leave for personal reasons. Adolfo has been a great ad because he is an excellent musician, one of the best I know and he has brought a lot of value to us.
5. Who would you say are the bands biggest influences? And for the readers who have never heard the band how would you best describe the bands musical style?
Our biggest influences are Disgorge, Cinerary, Liturgy, Brodequin, Deeds Of Flesh, Goratory, Internal Suffering, Goretrade (the splits), Carnal, Disavowed, Pyaemia, among a few others. We have been influenced by many scenes like Philippines, Indonesia, USA, Europe and specially Colombia. I would say that the best way to describe Cercenatory is as a dynamic, powerful and now a bit technical. Even though we are Colombian our style doesn't sound much like most bands in the country.
6. ’GoreSphere’ is the bands second full length release that will be released through Comatose Music when did you first come in contact with this label?
I got in contact with Comatose after the sad news we all know about Unmatched Brutality. We signed with UBR back in 2018 when shared stage with Brodequin when they came back on stage. Sadly, the label is no longer active and we couldn't release before they closed. I just decided then to contact a few labels, Comatose was one of the first labels I contacted, I sent the label our single "Crucified, Gutted, Desecrated" and Steve liked it, so as soon as I got a response from him I stopped writing to other labels and it was really very easy for us to make the decision to sign with Comatose. It's an amazing label, with a lot of history and it's always been one of the best labels for extreme music. We are happy to have signed.
7. How long did it take the band to write the music for the new release? Does the whole band work on the music or does one member usually write everything?
We always work as a team when writing. Nobody is really in charge of a single duty, we all collaborate to write guitars, drums, vocals, bass. David makes some riffs, then he shows the riffs to the band and we start writing from there, fixing a few things, correcting others, same thing goes with the drums, bass and lyrics. For this album we did give more freedom to Fer, he has excellent lyrics writing skills and a killer musical instinct and when he showed us what he had and started singing we loved it. We didn't have to edit much from what he did, it was just right on the money.
8. Besides the upcoming ‘GoreSphere’ CD are the bands previous releases still available for the readers to purchase? And will you all have any new merchandise for the upcoming release? If yes where can the readers purchase your merchandise?
There are a few items for sale. I know that Amputated Vein Records has some copies of our EP ‘Gorification of All Mental Diseases’ which sold a lot, if any readers are interested they can go to their store and purchase. Our first full length is still sold by Coyote Records, but we have no more copies with us. We do have shirts available and very soon we will have a new lot of shirts of ‘GoreSphere’ available and of course CDs. Comatose will also have Shirts and CDs available of course starting February 16th. You guys can pre-order now. Make sure to check our Facebook page and IG page to see all our items available. www.facebook.com/cercenatorycol or just type Cercenatory, same with IG.
9. Has Cercenatory played very many live shows over the years? If yes what have been some of the bands most memorable shows over the years? Who are some bands you have had the opportunity to share the stage with?
We've been active for 11 years now and during this time we have played maybe 4 or 5 shows per year. We've been lucky to have shared the stage with bands like Devourment, Internal Bleeding, Animals Killing People, Brodequin, Putrid Pile, Condemned, Invidiosus, Vomitory, C.A.R.N.E, Malignancy, Paracoccidioidomycosis Proctitisarcomucosis, Urtikaria Anal, Surgery, Decrepit Cadaver, and most of Colombian brutal bands like Goretrade, Evil Darkness, Impure Faith, Ancient Necropsy,Inbreeding Sick, Carnal Blasphemy, Goreobscenity, Mindly Rotten, Bacteremia, among many other national and international bands. We've been very lucky to come from a place where there was no BDM at all and get to share with such amazing bands.
10. Are there any tours or shows planned in support of ‘GoreSphere’? If yes where will the band be performing?
We are working in touring to promote ‘GoreSphere’, however nothing has been confirmed yet. Even though we have solid conversation with some promoters we rather not share those details until everything is confirmed. One thing you should know is that people will definitely be able to see us live very soon again ripping new and old songs. Also, if any promoter is reading this and wants to have us playing in your city or country don't hesitate to message us. We are eager to play live everywhere we can!
11. Cercenatory comes out of Colombia's brutal death metal scene what is your opinion of the scene in Colombia over the years?
To us, the Colombian scene is one of the best in the world. I remember that one of the things that really made me listen to extreme music is when I discovered all these Colombian bands that I used to dream about seeing live, and now most of them are friends and people we frequently see in shows and we have a good time with. The way Colombian bands play is just very extreme, nasty, hateful, hideous, it's got all the elements to make good BDM.
12. Who are your all-time favorite bands coming out of Colombia's metal scene? Who are some of the current bands that you could recommend to the readers?
All-time favorite bands from Colombia are definitely Internal Suffering, Carnivore Diprosopus, Goretrade, Carnal, Amputated Genitals, Ancient Necropsy, Blaze Inside, Evil Darkness, Purulent, Mindly Rotten, I'm not sure if I forget some. Really most bands I know in the country aren't new, but there are definitely some bands that are worth mentioning. One of the best bands I can recommend from my country and my region is Morgues, they just released their debut full length though Infinite Putrefaction records, Grotesque Atrocity that are waiting on their album as well through Mutilated Records, Solengium that has been out there for a while and are incredible musicians, Kinguts also great friends and well known, Impure Faith that I play with and we are working on our next full length, Decarabion that I also play with and we have released an EP just a few months ago, Human Abasement that are doing a great job but are relatively new. Those ones I can mention.
13. Besides working in Cercenatory do any of the members currently play in any other bands or solo projects? If yes please tell the readers a little about them?
Yes. I personally work with Impure Faith and Decarabion like I mentioned in the previous question. I work in these bands as a solid drummer for touring, composition and everything else. I also work with Amputated Genitals as a live drummer only, I played with AG back in 2018 and now I'll be going at it again for the next Mexican Tour in March. Other bands I play with are Catacombs (old school DM) from Barranquilla, Leprodermic that I started with Jhenry (Infectology) and Oscar (Esophageal, Scatology Secretion) but now the new guitar is Daniel Lara (Decarabion). David has a one man band called Basatan and he released a full length back in 2012, it's a great band worth listening to, he also has another band called Brutally Impaled and they are currently working in songs and recording after a little while. Adolfo has played for some bands out there like Mesentherio, Incinerating Prophecies, Mouldered, all bands from my city and he and I are working on a BDM band that we hope sees the light very soon and we hope Fernando can do the vocals for. Fernando doesn't play in any other band and has never played in any other band.
14. When you need to take a break from working on music or band business what do you enjoy doing in your free time?
Well, we really never take breaks from music, but when we take a break from work and Business we just like to travel, to chill at the beach, go to a bar, we like to smoke a lot of marihuana and have some beers, some shots, talk a lot of shit and laugh telling stories. Most of our free time we just decide to listen to music and talk, no matter the place. We are very fun people so we have one thousand stories to tell and laugh at.
15. Thank you for taking the time to fill this interview out do you have any final comments for the readers?
We want to thank all brutalheads around the world who have supported us during our 11 years career, we also want to thank you Winter Torment for giving us this space to speak about us and what we got for all the international brutal community. We encourage all sick supporters to keep doing what you do best, showing up to shows, buying merch, CDs, LPs, which is a passion for all. We hope to see every one of you soon and visit your country/city. Keep spreading the disease!!
