Interview with SwordQuest done on 12-16-24

1.Hello Dave please introduce yourself to the readers?

Hello everyone. I’m Dave, born and raised in Upstate NY. I’m an analyst by day, and a musician by night. I grew up in the local hardcore and metal scene, played in crossover bands in college days and currently play in several solo projects handling all instruments, vocals, mixing, mastering and marketing.

2.When did you first discover black and death metal and what is it about these genres that drew you in?

In early high-school, I got roped into loving Anthrax, Slayer, Megadeth, Metallica and Testament. I soon found Sepultura, Morbid Angel, Deicide and Fear Factory and my metal appetite grew and grew. Once I found bands like Disincarnate, Cathedral, Disharmonic Orchestra and Carcass, it was all downhill from there. College found me working for a radio station, getting to interview and hang with great bands like Morbid Angel and Dream Theater. Fortunate to see amazing shows in the 90’s like Cynic on the Focus tour, Cannibal Corpse a zillion times, Type-O, and pretty much every good HxC band in the Victory golden era. But when I found early Sentenced (North From Here) and Mayhem, Emperor, Bathory and stuff like that – that was really the beginning of the end.

3.Who were the first bands that you discovered?Who are some of the current bands that you are listening too?

I answered a lot of this in the question above, but the roots of it for me started with Slayer, Anthrax, Megadeth, Testament, Morbid Angel, Sepultura, Carcass, Obituary, and Fear Factory. Currently, I am heavily into all that is atmo-BM, and a ton of doom. Lune, Lord Mountain, Acid Witch, Crone Visions, Fugitive, Obsequiae, Grylles, Faery Ring, Black Curse, Meurtrieres, Skovtage, Paysage d’Hiver, Tour d’Ivoire and One Of Nine are a few of my favorites right now. Also a huge Brant Bjork fan. And a Bjork fan as well, lol.

4.SwordQuest is your new band/project that you started earlier this year what gave you the idea to start this project? How did you choose SwordQuest as the name of the band?

So, I have always been a classic gamer – grew up in the Eighties, loving Atari, Colecovision, Tandy TRS-80, Commodore 64 and then onto NES and SNES. I pretty much spent all my free time (and money) in arcades and the soundtracks and sound effects for the games are core memories. The first time I played Space Invaders at a hockey rink in 1981, that was the end for me. So, the idea of taking these core memories and making them into a current soundtrack for my own enjoyment resulted in this project. Swordquest was the name of a horrific game series at the time of the great video game crash, and seemed like a legit name to roll with. Its tough finding a name that isn’t already taken, and it worked.

5.Who would you say are the bands biggest influences? For those who have never heard the bands music how would you best describe it?

Honestly, the biggest influences are 1980’s classic Nintendo arcade, and a smattering of super old dungeon crawlers like Dungeons Of Daggorath. And of course great Medieval stuff like Bards Tale and Dungeons & Dragons in general. Someone I know described Swordquest’s sound as “The soundtrack to the best bootleg Zelda game mixed with hooked-on Bach” and I think that fits.

6.I believe you are the sole member of the band did you plan to work alone or would you like to add more musicians to work with on future recordings?

For Swordquest, its just me, my Mac, my DAW, and my EP-1320. But I am always happy to collaborate with people if there’s interest.

7.If you could work with any musicians past or present who would you like to work with?

That’s a tough question. Definitely Com Truise, David Gilmour, Larry Lalonde & Les Claypool. Gary “Gaz” Jennings and Lee Dorian for sure, and all of Acid Witch. So many others as well, I can’t even begin to name all of the pro’s I look up to.

8.Wielder Of Draconian Might is the debut 7 Inch that is being released through Mourning Breath Arts when did you first come in contact with this label?

I actually heard from the dude at the label through a Facebook group just recently. He’s a pretty cool dude, and it’s a small label but I hope to see it gain traction and grow. It deserves to. Its so tough now, people are slow to support, a lot of gatekeeping and its rare that people want to pay to support the art. I blame Spotify in general and social media, the mentality is consume quickly and look for the next better thing.

9.How long did it take to write the music for the debut 7Inch?How long would you say it takes to complete one song?

Probably a combined total of 30-40 hours for the 7 inch. On average, I’d say a Swordquest track takes 15-20 hours at minimum to flesh out, perform, sequence, track, mix and master. It’s an arduous process, but a labor of love. Its cool that other people dig the tracks, because in all truth, I’m making them mostly for myself!

10.Where can the readers order your debut 7inch?Do you have any other merchandise coming up in the new year?

The 7-inch is an ultra limited pressing on Mourning Breath Arts Bandcamp page. There are 20 black copies, and 5 white copies and its selling pretty quickly. These are mono square lathe cut, so legit bootleg collectibles. The mono sketched me at first, but when I  remastered the tracks from stereo to mono, I was stoked because they sound even better in mono.                                                                      https://mourningbreatharts.bandcamp.com/album/wielder-of-draconian-might

11.Have you started working on new music for the next release?Have you decided if you would like to do a full length or a 7inch?

There is a full length on preorder at my Bandcamp page, and I would anticipate it will see physical release in the near future as well.

https://swordquest.bandcamp.com/

12.Besides SwordQuest do you currently work with any other solo projects or bands? If yes please tell the readers a little about them?

I have another preorder for a black metal project with a friend of mine singing. Its on Bandcamp as well – Nuit Eternelle. Singer has a unique sound, definitely fits the music and keeps it from sounding like every other BM band out there.                                                                                                                      https://nuit-eternelle.bandcamp.com/album/lobscurit

13.When you need to take a break from working on new music or band business what do you like to do in your free time?

I spend a lot of time with my dog Atari, and my son. Love being outdoors, on the water, on a hike – in the sun, trying new beers, or home spinning records and playing old school arcade games. I have a few original arcade machines that keep me busy, and thousands of records.

14.Thank you Dave for taking the time to do this interview

Absolutely! Thank you for having me!

Sardonic Witchery - "Barberic Evil Power" done by Cátia Godinho “Caos” Posted on 12-13-24

Band:  Sardonic Witchery

Album: “Barbaric Evil Power”

Label(s): War March Records / Nekrogoat Heresy Productions / Abyssal Productions/ Aniquilación Satánica Productions

Release Year: January /2024

We know what to expect when it comes to Sardonic Witchery.

Pure black metal with an ambient totally 80s, atrocious, with an old school production, a blackened, raspy, screaming voice.

With lyrics that echo Portugal's conquests in its early days as one of the greatest kingdoms.

Lost conquests, wounds to a country's proud heritage, but these lyrics call out for ancient glory and honor.

King Demogorgon, the Lusitanian in American lands, emanates a brutality in his uncommon art, soaked in old school black thrash metal.

The new album “Barbaric Evil Power” is a battlefield where lyrics in Portuguese and English are a hymn to the ancestors,

with raging riffs and unstoppable blast beats.

Unstoppable in prioritizing the improvement of album after album, King Demogorgon has for many decades, even in other former recognized projects, always achieved the professionalism capable of reaching around the world.

Special mention should be made of the songs: “Sofrimento da Ordem do Tempo (Disciplina), sung in perfect Portuguese with Lusitanian blood, and the historic Lusitanian Wolf”.

Congruity--Inferno cd {BoneSaw Entertainment}review done by Cátia Godinho “Caos” posted on 12-13-24

More than twenty years have passed, and the band Congruity continues to perfect its exceptional sound technique.
Their audacious black death metal is well-known to all listeners and fans of the genre. And if you don't know them yet, I suggest you discover the Portuguese group.
We have in our hands the new ep “Inferno”, and as it says, it is precisely a hellish album, with an authentic lyrical malevolence.
I would highlight the imposing adaptation of Fernando Pessoa's poem in the song “O Inferno de ser Eu”, in which, like the immortal poet, the band describes the inner personal struggles of human beings throughout life.
In this way, Congruity goes beyond the themes of violence, bloody words and blasphemy, which are known and always repeated in this type of sound, showing a much more intrinsic side full of deep inspiration.
The production quality of this work is brutally perfect, with very solid technical skills, where the drum work brightens up the whole ep.
In 20 minutes, the band makes us fall into a chaotic, aggressive abyss of sound, with a more melancholic mid-ambient surprise in the instrumental track “Only Ashes Remain”.
The devastating gutturals and overwhelming riffs complement the “Inferno” ep, leaving open the colossus that is to come in the future.

AEDELGARD interview conducted by Jay posted on 12-3-24

Hi this is Jay reporting from Bogota, Colombia…

Today I’m lucky enough to be talking with Matthew from Aedelgard Black Metal band from Krasnodar, Russia

Privet, hope you’re well… thanks for taking the time out of your busy recording schedule to talk to our readers…

- Privet! All is well. I will be glad to communicate with you and answer your questions.

When / why/ where was Aedelgard  formed?
- In 2022, I started thinking about creating my own project. I had been saving up ideas and riffs for songs for a long time, and I decided to put them all together.
In the summer of 2024, I finished recording my debut album with Tony Hraefn (vocals and lyrics). We used the name "Aedelgard" for our project. I'm from Krasnodar, and the vocalist is from Arizona in the USA. However, we don't have any barriers in our creative process.

The debut album, Natteglimt, is due in January on CD.. tell us about it and where people can get digital and physical copies…
- Yes, you can get digital copies of "Natteglimt" on our Bandcamp page: https://aedelgard.bandcamp.com. If you want a CD, you can get it from Masters of Kaos (https://mastersofkaos.bandcamp.com). And if you prefer cassettes, they are already available from Regolith Records: https://regolithrecords.ru.

What inspires your music? What are your lyrics about?

- We find nature and a change of scenery very inspiring. The lyrics of our songs touch upon themes of unity with nature, paganism, and mythology.

What bands have influenced you? What music did you listen to growing up?

- The classics, of course. I was most influenced by Burzum, Emperor, Satyricon, and Windir. Also, the lesser-known ones like Evilfeast and Lilith. I think you can find a similar atmosphere to these bands in my music. You can hear it.

What equipment do you use and what is the recording process?

- For the first album I used minimalistic equipment. I recorded the guitars on the line input of a sound card. I mixed everything myself on one computer, but the vocals were recorded by the vocalist, at his home studio. For the second album I plan to use updated and improved equipment.

Do you have new releases planned for 2025?

- Yes, it will be our second full-length album. We're already in the process of creating it, and we've already written half of the songs. The album will be of higher quality, with well-mixed tracks. It will have more folk and emotional elements, and also include more philosophical themes.

What are your plans for the future? Will Aedelgard be playing live ??

- In the near future I want to focus only on music. However, I also have plans for concerts. In the future I hope to give at least a few concerts in Russia. Later, when we have a bigger audience and more material. In any case, I want to make a great atmospheric show.

Tell us about the current scene there in Russia… recommend some bands for our readers to check out
- Russia has a good scene for black metal. Although there are more post-black metal bands here, they are really good.
I especially like bands like Todestriebe, Black Lakes and Grima. The first two bands are a great example of our old-school black metal. Grima inspire me as individuals who broke through among other bands and made it to the world stage (By the way, they recently signed with Napalm Records.).

How has the current political crisis affected the scene and bands in Russia? And what have they done to overcome these obstacles?

- Our bands fewer opportunities to perform in other countries and receive support from fans there. However, we must continue to grow. Even in this situation, it is possible to attract fans from all over the world.

what are your top 5 metal albums of all time and why?
 1. Satyricon - “Nemesis Divina”. This is a cool and atmospheric album that has been permeating me for quite some time now. It has its own unique sound and feel that I can't find anywhere else.
2. Emperor - “In The Nightside Eclipse”. This is a beautiful classic, and I don't think many words are needed to describe it. It's a great melodic album.
3. Summoning - “Minas Morgul”. Another epic black metal album that I highly recommend.
4. Ulver - “Bergtatt”. This album immerses you in a cool atmosphere, very “alive” and beautiful. I think it will never be forgotten in this genre.
5. Evilfeast - “Elegies of the Stellar Wind”. This album is not as famous or old as the ones I mentioned above, but I really liked it for its atmosphere and interesting sound. I love works with this kind of sound.

What is your opinion of the current Black Metal, not just in Russia, but globally speaking?

- There's a lot of black metal around the world right now. This is both a good and a bad thing. When I look for good bands to listen to, I often find dozens of bands with similar sound, melodies, and designs. So yes, this genre needs more variety right now!

Do you have any words of wisdom for young musicians looking to follow in your footsteps?

There is one piece of advice that has helped me and musicians I know in my time. Don't write songs “for the sake of need” when you “need” to write something. Write them only when you are inspired. And if you don't have it, the best option is not to listen to almost any music for about a month, to take more walks in nature and to “bore” a little on purpose. And of course, good luck in your endeavors!

Would you like to add anything for our readers?

Don't hold back your creativity. Do whatever you want to do here. Music needs new discoveries. Thanks!
Spasibo Matthew! 666                                                                                                                                   https://aedelgard.bandcamp.com/album/natteglimt                                                                                      https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61563467735192
