Interview with Alexey drummer for Stalino done on 3-15-25

1.Hello Alexey how are you doing these days? Please introduce yourself to the readers?

Greetings, Patrick, and all the readers of this magazine! My name is Alexey, I am the drummer of the band Stalino, I also played in the bands Endocranial, Datura, Bredor. At this stage, I'm back in business with Stalino, after a long forced pause. I play in a band, develop myself behind the drums, and give private lessons.

2.When did you first discover death metal music

It didn't come right away, it all started with my love for Deep Purple 1970-72 albums when I was a kid, then I had an interest in Metallica, Slayer... Then I heard and fell in love with Cannibal Corpse, Death, Morbid Angel at the age of 13. A year later, I discovered Deeds Of Flesh, Pyrexia, Suffocation, Cryptopsy, and my worldview was fully formed...In general terms...
I like everything about this genre, this power-energy, the very taste of style, a huge field for creative freedom. Here you can really be yourself creatively. I've dedicated myself to this music, and I've literally been living it for 30 years now.

3.Who were the first bands that you discovered?Who  are some of the current bands that you have been listening to?

I answer to it in pervious question

4.When did you first meet the other members of the band? And was it long before you all started Stalino? What is the current line up of the band?

If we talk about the first line-up of Stalino, then I have been friends with bassist Yulick since the distant 1997th year. I had a chance to play with guitarist Vadim in 1999-2002 in the bands Bredor and Gloomimored. It just so happened that the first line-up consisted of three musicians from the old band Bredor.

In the new Stalino line-up, we have two active members of the Datura band. I should add that I also had the honor to play in this  band back in 2002-2006.

The new line-up is Dmitry Kufley - bass/vocals, Alexander Brodyanoy - guitar, and myself Alexey Tsypchenko - drums.

5.For the readers who have never heard Stalino's how would you best describe it?Who would you say are the bands biggest influences?

Stalino's music is largely based on constructive rhythmic structures, the foundation for us is the oldschool  brutal death metal, but not without tangible influences from more modern examples such as Defeated Sanity, Malignancy... We were also influenced by technical-death, mostly from the 90s, and partly by progmetal..

6.Worldview pierced By Euphoria is the bands second full length that was released in 2023.How long did it take the band to write the music for this release?Does the whole band take part in the writing process or does one member usually write everything?

The music for this album was written over the course of two years 2019-2021.
All the musicians took part in the composition of Stalino's music, and it should be added that the different songs on the album were written by different participants and different methods. Here are some examples... The track "Impact" was originally composed by me as a ready-made drum part for the entire song, then I dictated to the guitarist all the riff structures that I had conceived for this song ...
All the riffs for the song "Four Unaccountable Foundations" were invented by our bassist Dmitry, and then arranged by the rest of the members. The rest of the compositions were written jointly by the whole band, some of the material was composed with the previous guitarist Ivan Lozovsky, some with the new guitarist Alexander Brodyanoy.

7.Where does the band draw inspiration for the lyrics and what are some of the topics written about Worldview pierced By Euphoria?Which usually comes first the music or the lyrics?

It happens differently with the frequency of concerts here. Regarding priorities, both aspects are important and loved by us! Recordings are held every few years, but concerts are more common.

8.If anyone is interested where can they find the Worldview pierced By Euphoria release to buy a copy?Besides this release does the band have any other merchandise availible? If yes what is availible and where can the readers purchase it?

Our new album was released on the Russian label Coyote Records in the Digipak CD format as well as in a cassette version. You can order it directly from our label, or search on other global labels where there was a distribution from Coyote.
Stalino also has another full-length album released in 2013 on the same label, which was also re-released in a limited edition in cassette format later in 2021 on the Dissonant Tapes label in the USA. Also, a Stalino/Datura/Bredor split was released on Coyote Records containing our rare recordings.
Our first EP of 2010, called "Conflict", was released on the Ukrainian label Eclectic Productions...

9.Has the band had time to start working on new music for the next release? How long does it usually take to complete one song?

Yes, of course, we are in the process of creating new music. It usually takes us from 2 to 4 months to create a single each composition.

10.Alexey you handle the drums for the band when did you first become interested in playing the drums? Are you self taught or did you have lessons when first starting out?

It just so happened that my first musical instrument was a guitar, which I practically abandoned as soon as I switched to drums. I started playing drums at the age of 13. It was a children's music school, after which I studied at a music college. But I must say that I learned a lot more on my own, listening to other drummers, fueled by the materials of video schools and music textbooks.
I would like to add that my superficial knowledge of guitar helps me a lot in terms of a deeper understanding of music in general, and a better mutual understanding with my bandmates.

11.Who  would you say are your  biggest influences and favorite drummers?

I have too many of my favorite drummers. 30 or 50 at least, and it's not just metal drummers. I really love playing by Lille Gruber, Mike Heller, Romain Goulon, Flo Mounier, Gene Hoglan, Sean Reinert, Kevin Talley, Bobby Jarzombek, Gavin Harrison...
My musical mindset is made up of many things, I listen to various metal subgenres and other music too...

12.Besides working in Stalino do you or any of the other members currently work with any other bands or solo projects? If yes please tell the readers a little about them?

At the moment I only play Stalino, until recently I was also active with Endocranal. But my bandmates have the main band Datura too and several projects Megalodont, Steam Hammer, Imitation, Vanstorbing Insolobridishn, Imitation, The Gaz.

13.When you need to take a break from working on music related stuff  what do you enjoy doing in your free time?

In my free time, I mostly continue to be around music. This includes listening to my favorite albums and interesting new things too, watching educational videos, and movies about music. A lot of online and live communication with friends who have the same interests in metal music or drumming themes. Well, nothing mundane is alien to me, I like to travel, etc...

14..Thank you Alexey for taking the time to fill this interview out do you have any final words for the readers?

1 I just wish all the readers all the best! Support the metal scene as a whole, and your local scene in the first place, I see this as an important aspect! \m/
