Interview with Nervosa done by Patrick
1.Hello when did you all first meet each other and was it long before you got the idea to start the band? How did you all choose the name Nervosa for the bands name?
Fernanda: I had just left my previous band and was looking for girls to start an all female trash trio. When I was almost about giving up because it may be really hard to find girls who wanna commit to a band seriously, I got a message from Prika saying she had this band that was in a need of a bassist and singer. So I always say they were what I was looking for and I was what they were looking for. Then in July 2010 we decided to join our efforts and make Nervosa finally happen as an active band. Nervosa is a great name and I agreed with that rightaway when I joined the band, otherwise I'd have suggested another one. It's a short, aggressive, easy, female and kick ass name, and in Portuguese, which is our mother language. So in my opinion it couldn't be any better then this!
2.What is the current line-up of Nervosa? And for the readers who have never heard the bands music how would you best describe it?
Fernanda: Me, Fernanda Lira, i'm singer and bassist. Prika Amaral is the guitarist and does backing vocals too and Pitchu Ferraz is our drummer. Nervosa is a thrash metal band, very influenced by old school metal, and now we're blending some other elements, like death metal into our songs.
3. Nervosa is getting ready to release the second cd "Agony" how long did it take to write and record the music for this release? Does the whole band take part in the writing process or does one member write everything?
Fernanda: We needed a break from touring to write the album and we only has like 2 and a half months to do it before the scheduled sessions to recorded it. It was crazy, because we would write a song a week and rehearse like three or four times a week, but the good thing is that we were full of ideas on our minds so everything was easy. This album really represents what Nervosa is musically because the three of us have a very important role on writing every song. I mean, in every song there's ideas from the three of us.
4.Who usually takes care of the lyrics for the band and what are some topics you all write about?
Fernanda: Me and Prika write all the lyrics and this time we even wrote some songs together, which is something we've been willing to do for a long time. As for the lyrics contents, we always like to talk about more realistic things, all related to the human being. We write about social issues and political matters, and on this album we also wrote about more abstract aspects of the humans, like hypocrisy , arrogance, intolerance. It's usually about bad stuff because we use our lyrics as our dearest way of expressing ourselves, so all the shit we live and have to deal with on our daily routine are spit out when we write our songs.
5.What have been some of the bands most memorable shows to date? Are their any countries the band has not had the opportunity to play yet but would like to?
Fernanda: Fortunately we have had many memorable shows. Of course every show is special and unique in different ways for us, but maybe the gigs at the 70k tons of metal (the metal cruise) and the ones on the European summer fests last year were the most remarkable for us! There's still many places we wanna visit though, like some countries in Asia, Oceania and Africa which are now hosing great metal circuits. I really hope we can make it to play there next year!
6.Does Nervosa have any tours coming up the readers should watch out for? If yes where will the band be playing? And who are some bands you will be sharing the stage with?
Fernanda: During June and July we'll be heading to Europe, to play some headlining gigs in venues and also a couple of summer fests. Right after that, we'll go straight to east coast USA and Canada and spend the whole month touring there. Then we'll be home for two weeks and head to Europe again and do a tour with Destruction, Flotsam and Jetsam and Enforcer, from mid September to mid October. This is gonna be great!
7.Nervosa comes out of Brazil's thrash metal scene what is your opinion of Brazil's thrash metal scene?
Fernanda: i'm really really proud of being part of such a solid and incredible metal scene. Wherever you go in Brazil you'll find a very solid scene, with very passionate and loyal fans but mainly, incredible an quality bands!
8.Who are your all-time favorite bands from Brazil? And are their any new bands coming out of Brazil that you feel the readers should check out soon?
Fernanda: First of them would have to be Sepultura because of what they represent to many Brazilian metal bands- they were the ones who showed us that yes you can be and extreme metal band from Brazil and you can succeed, and this message is very important! But there's also many other bands that I love and that influenced me a lot! Some of them are Krisiun, Ratos de Porão, Torture Squad, Claustrophobia y and many other ones. But there's many many more, I could list you like a hundred other awesome bands. As for the new school, there are very good ones like Lacerated and Carbonized, Jackdevil ad and many more.
9.In your opinion what is the best and worst thing about the underground metal scene today? And what does underground metal mean to you all?
Fernanda: I think in each scene around the globe the problems are different. For example there are countries where bands can e arrested if they are against the government on their lyrics for example. So I think it varies a lot. In South America our greatest struggle is the lack of opportunity. We have awesome aggressive creative bands that are not only heard worldwide because we have no money to invest in music, everything is too difficult around here, especially for musicians. And I think metal as a whole will always be an underground music style because just a few feel that crazy vibe when we listen to metal. To me, metal means my whole life, nearly everything I am and have nowadays owe to metal.
10.Are their any plans to make a video for any of the songs off of the new cd"Agony"?Is their a certain song you all would like to see made into a video?
Fernanda: We released a lyrics v for the ideo for Intolerance means War a month ago and today, while I write you, we're releasing a new video for the song Hostages. I'm very satisfied with the result of the video and I think it was a good option, because the song has all the elements present all along the album, ao I think it represents it really well. Also, because the lyrics are a critic to public health systems, we could do a very 'bloody' video and the result is kickass!
11.When not working on new music or band business what do you all enjoy doing in your free time?
Fernanda: I enjoy a lot cooking and eating movies, these are probably my favorite hobbies. Also I like to play volley ball and rollerskating, all of these are the things I miss the most when we're touring!
12.Thank you for taking the time to fill this interview out do you all have any final words for the readers?
Fernanda: thank you ir the opportunity if having us here talking about our music! And for everyone who's reading, thanks a lot for the support an keep respecting and supporting your local metal scene because each and every one if us are he sole responsible for keeping the metal flame burning.
