1.Hails    Leviathan     please  introduce  yourself to  the  readers   and  when  did you  first  get   into  metal   music?

 

Hailz Warbrother, well longtime ago , like other metalheads in my country, we see the animes like Saint Seiya, this was musicalized with

electric guitars, fast songs, and epic music, this take my attention, later I discover more about the real bands of classic rock and metal music

, first the simple ideas like metallica, later southamerican bands like sepultura, vulcano, and well , this not finished every day , I discover

new extreme music everyday, finally I here playing and making extreme noise.

 

 

 

 

 

 

2. Leviathan   you  formed    Maze  Of   Terror   in  2011   what  gave  you  the  idea  to  form  this  band?  Who  chose  the  name    Maze  Of   Terror     as  the  name  of the  band?

 

 

the name of the band was an original idea of my friend Hammer, he tells me about the idea of the human mind as a Labyrinth

without end ,an Maze, we write about terrible, terrific things, because we make "Terror" on our noise, and well the correct name

for the band was Maze of Fucking Terror.

 

 

 

3.What  is  the   current   line-up   of   Maze  Of   Terror?   For  the  readers    who  have   never  heard  the  bands  music   how  would  you  best  describe  the  bands  musical  style?

 

Hammer in Drums, Criminal and Razor in Guitars, and I in the Bass and Screams, I dont like talk about our music, I simple say to all, Listen,

but our style is not only Thrash Metal, we think on make brutal noises, brutal music with dark lirycs, not funny, not unreal, we use touches

of black and death, as the tradition of southamerican metal, is good for us dont make walls, more brutal is good, we seek the brutality in every touch.  

 

 

 

4. Maze  Of   Terror   is  getting  ready  to  release  their  debut  cassette  "Ready  To Kill"   through  P-18  Rec.  how   did  the  band  come  in  contact   with this   label?  Are  you  all  happy  with the   job they  have   done  so  far?

 

 

We are really Happy !, especially I , when the vinyl and disc is out we dont completely agree with the design, some presion of time, makes necesary put the disc, out,

but well our friend Bela Kovacs contact us, and well, was posible make a better design of the art for the tape, and I colaborate to this, and we are really satisfied

with the work, really really thank you P18 records and Neverheard Distro!!!!

 

 

5.How  long did  it  take  to  write the  music  on  the  debut release  and  does the  whole  band  work  on the  music  or  does   one  member   usually  write  everything?

 

 

usually we wrote fast the songs, but our disc takes 2 years in finished, because the shows, the studio times, and the label times delay us, we start with

the tablature of the guitars and the concept for each song, later we put drums to make the rhytm and finally, voice and solos, we try to make music fast,

but is complex in this media, we are and independent band even.

 

 

6.Who   usually  takes  care  of the  lyrics  for the  band.And  what  are  some  subjects  the  band  writes  about?

 

 

Hammer and I , we write about serious topics, hunger, hate, war, in a serious way, we dont write about mosh or satanism

for example we wrote about histories of witchcraft with the propose to tell a history, not preach about it, 

or tell histories about brutally fact like apartheid, or the horrors of the human mind in songs like "Giles de Rais". 

 

 

 

7.Besides  the  debut  cassette  does  the  band  have  any  past releases  or  merchandise   available   for  the  readers?  If  yes   what  is  available   and  where  can  the  readers  buy  it?

 

 

well , the Ep Skullcrusher is sold out , is available now the vinyl and cd of the album Ready to Kill, the album is been good

8.Does    Maze  Of   Terror   get  to  play "live" very  often  or  do you   prefer  working  in  the  studio?  What  have  been some  of the  bands  most  memorable   shows   so  far?

in my personal perspective, we have opened for different bands, but would feel ,that the most memorable were open for Whiplash, Toxik and

Pentagram, as performances, we had some, for example a concert with the NECROPSYA legends here in our city Lima, that was very good, and

I would also mention the shows in province where people gave more than if for support.

9.Are their   any  shows  or  tours  planned   for  the rest  of the  year  or  early  2017?  If  yes   where   are  some  countries  and  places  the  band  will  be   playing?

 

Coming soon we play in a tour on Ecuador  , open for Malevolent Creation, and other shows beside really good bands like Conjure and Nightprowler, 

we work on new material, close to finish in the next month October, later in 2017 we start to make music for a new Album while we make more shows

and make new tours.

 

 

 

 

10.The  band  comes  out  of  Peru's   thrash  metal  scene   what  is  your  opinion  of  the   Peruvian   metal  scene?

 

We have good bands, but we need them recorded more material and people buy them, there are good bands like Obscure Evil, Sordid, Morbid Slaugther, Bloodlust,

Here there are many metal fans 80tas, but still need people to support and understand the current metal that is done here.

 

 

11.Who   are  your  all-time  favorite  bands  from  Peru?  Are  their  any  new  bands  you  feel  the  readers  should  watch  out  for?

Necropsya, Reino Ermitaño, Anal Vomit, Mortem, Cobra, etc, here have so many good metal bands to know and apreciate my friend. 

 

 

12.Besides  bands  are  their   any  good  labels  or  distro's  you  feel  the  readers   should  watch  out    for?

 

Inti records from Peru is a great distro to take on mind, in the world I see the work of P18 and To The Death, other is Destruktor Records from Germany, his designs are awesome

I like the work of big labels like Season of Mist, Napalm Records and Relapse, I see they fight to distribute new and good bands.

 

 

 

 

 

13.In  your    opinion    what  does   underground    metal   mean  to  you?

 

Underground in metal or punk or whatever, means bands looking to make metal in its own way without following a line blindly, but looking for a unique sound in or out of a genre,

striving with or without money for it, with or without public, seeking to make art in self-satisfaction in each of its productions,

underground is not an style is an movement, fuck of rock stars !!!!!!!

 

 

14.Leviathan     besides  working  and   playing  in   Maze  Of   Terror    do  you  or   any  of  the   members   currently  work  with   any  other  bands?  If  yes  please  tell  us  about the  other  bands you  all  work  with?

 

 

Criminal, Hammer and I only plays in M.O.T, my friend Razor is guitars and voice in the band Sordid, they play a really good black thrash in an special way,

they are really good I recommend you really my friend.

 

 

15. Leviathan   you   handle  the  vocal   duties  for the  band   when  did you  first  start  screaming? Do  you  do  anything  special  to   keep  your  throat  and  voice   healthy?

 

In my little experience, is importar know, in the underground thrash ussually , we are only screamers, in my young life sometimes my throat bleeds,

but I learn to open the throat to the air runs free and dont eat much before to scream, scream is not equal to sing, sing is difficult but screaming not,

but we must keep some details correct to make this good, without pain, but with really hate

  

 

16.Who   are  some  of your  favorite  vocalists?

 

Cronos, Chris Bailey of Infernal Majesty, Stacy Sheepdog of Razor, Max Cavalera, Nicola Ingrassia (Necrodeath and Schizo), David Vincent, Lemmy, Tom Araya, Joel Grind, I ussually listen all, are great influence and great fountain of many ideas, I really gratefull with them.

 

 

17.You  also  play the  bass  for  the  band   when  did you first  become  interested  in  playing the   bass?  Besides  the  vocals   and  bass duties  do  you  play  any  other   instruments?

I only play bass and the screams, but in primitive way, the Guitar, when I was 14, I see in the television a bass solo of Jason newsted,

was awesome, I think is more good to play and different instrument than the guitar, and well, later I learn more about the bass,

and appear an great admiration for this wonderfull instrument.

1. Hello please  introduce yourselfs  to  the  readers? I   believe  the  two  members  of  the  band live  in  different  countries  when  did you  two  first  meet?

Z: Hellschwadron currently consist of two members. We are living on different sides of the world, but this is not a problem. Modern technology makes it possible. We have been in touch for many years now and met a couple of times here and there. We both play in various musical projects and music brought us together one day.



2. When  did  you  get the  idea  to  start  Hellschawadron  and  how did you  all come up  with the  name  of  the  band?

Z: As Hellschwadron is a German/American project we thought that a word-play would fit best for the project’s name - and the name “Hellschwadron” fits in my opinion. It expresses the overall feeling of the music / the album quite nicely. Like a troop of bombers directly attacking you from above. Hellschwadron is a project that was formed a few years ago spontaneously with the intent to create aggressive and catchy music. In the beginning it was just a collection of riffs and the whole thing was put aside for a while. One day we thought that we should take all the stuff and release it on CD, i.e. to finalize it with vocals, layout, lyrics, mastering etc. The debut album was released in summer 2016 on Mercenary Musik / Symbolic Art Productions – we are very happy with the outcome.



3. Hellschawadron   just  released  their  debut  full-length  "Storming Obliteration"  how  long  did  it  take to  write  the  music  for  these  songs? Do  you  both  write and  work  on the  music  or  does  one  member   usually  write  everything? For  the  readers   who  have  never  heard   Hellschawadron's  music  how  would you  best  describe  it?

Z: The songs were recorded over a period of several months a few years back. After a few years we decided to bring these records back and to releasing them. It is mainly me writing the music, whereas B is responsible for the concept, vocals, lyrics etc. The best description of Hellschwadron is probably Black-Thrash. It is very difficult to describe the music I would say. It contains elements of Thrash Metal, Death Metal and Black Metal. Also the vocals are quite varying. The overall feeling is catchy and has the “straight-in-your-face”-feeling, I would say. Most of the songs are straight forward and quite aggressive. I usually try to avoid putting the music to a certain “category”.


4. I  believe  the  lyrics  are  based  around  World War 1 and  2   when  did you  guys  first  become  interested  in  studying  the  wars  and  history?  Will  future   Hellschawadron releases  be  based  around  these  wars  or  would you   like  to   explore  other  wars  and  times  in  history?

B: When we thought about putting a “theme” to this music, it seemed that War and especially these wars would fit us perfectly. Because these wars still connect to us in direct and indirect ways. Although they are modern wars they are now very nostalgic in our psyche. War is a function of the Human condition. 

Z: If there will be a next record, the concept of the lyrics will for sure remain the same.



5.Besides  the  first  two  world-wars  are their  any  other  times  in  history that you  like to read  and study? Other  then  history  do you  guys  like to read and study  any other  subjects  if   yes  what  are some  some you  like to  read  and  study  about?

B: We read about everything, but in regards to Hellschwadron, the subject matter will remain strictly World War I & World War II. 


6. Other then  the debut  cd   "Storming Obliteration" does  the  band  have   any  other  merchandise  available  for the readers?  If  yes  please  tell the  readers  what  is  available  and  where they  can  buy  your  release and  merchandise?

Z: for the moment, there is only the debut CD. However, we still maybe plan to get it out on Vinyl and to have some shirts available some day. Check out www.mercenarymusik.com from time to time


7. As  previously  mentioned  earlier  the  two  members  live  in  different  countries  Germany  and  the  U.S.A    what  are  your  opinions  of your  respected  metal  scenes?

Z: I cannot really judge to be honest. This is simply because I lost the connection to the “scene” many many years ago. I rather prefer to listen to the old classic records.



8. Who  are  some  of your  all-time favorite  bands  ?  And  are their   any  new  bands you  feel  the  readers   should  watch  out  for?

Z: I cannot say much about new bands that I could recommend. My all-time favorite bands are not really located in the Thrash Metal scene. There are many great bands out there that have nothing to do with Metal. There are too many to mention. There is lots of great Ambient/Neofolk/Industrial – stuff out there.

B: I feel the same way, I enjoy all different kinds of music and my taste is varied. As far as influences and favorites that relate to Hellschwadron, it would definitely be everything from the classic 80’s thrash and 90’s death metal and black metal.



9. In your opinions what does  underground metal  mean  to you?

Z: It does not mean much to me. I can just say that we both are underground and that we were part of the scene since many many years. 




10. Besides  working  in  Hellschawadron      do  either  of you  currently  work  with  other  bands  or  solo projects?

Z: I am working on a couple of projects, but none of these have anything to do with Metal. The main project we both work on right now is for sure Battle Dagorath though. 

B: We have 2 albums being released soon by Avantgarde Music. The albums are “I – Dark Dragons of the Cosmos” & “II – Frozen Light of Eternal Darkness”. The first has just recently been released, then the 2nd will come some months later. Check them out please.


11. When  not  working  on  new  music  or  band  business   what  do you  enjoy  doing  in your  free  time?

B: Mostly there is nothing else, only music all the time. And sometimes beer

1.Hails  when  did  you  all first  meet each  other?Was it long before  you  all  decide  to  start  this  band?How  did  you  all  decide  on Wolf's Hunger  as  the  name  of the  band?

Hails Patrick. 
Well the story about Wolf’s Hunger started long time ago, in 2002. when we were 15-16 years old kids. It was some kind of “golden period” for Serbian metal scene, tons of great bands, fans were coming on every gig, many printed metal fanzines/magazines etc. In that time Caslav and Golub were playing in band Divinator, Veljko and Dusan were playing in band Balrog. After some time Caslav and Dovla are calling Veljko, Dusan and Djus and band Altair’s stone was born. Shortly after, we changed the name of the band into Wolf’s Hunger. I cannot precisely explain to you  the meaning of the name because our old member Dusan came up to that.


2.What  is  the  current  line-up  of  the  band? And  for  the  readers  who  have  never  heard  Wolf's Hunger  music  how  would  you  best  describe  it?

Wolf’s Hunger play thrash black metal with lyrics inspired by Serbian history and mythology.  Uncompromised, aggressive without any technical/avantgarde bullshits, just pure thrash/black metal. Our main influences are bands like Slayer, Aura noir, Darkthrone, Enslaved, Mayhem… Members of the band are Knez Caslav(vocals/bass), Dovla(guitars), Igor(guitars) and Ivan(drums).


3.Wolf's Hunger   is  getting  ready to  release  their  second cd  "Bez'te  Zivi  Vracaju Se Mrtvi" through  Symbol Of  Domination Rec.  how  did the  band  come  in  contact   with this  label?

All studio work was done in period between September-December 2015. then we started searching for label. One of the first labels that got our record was Satanath and Alexey(main guy in Satanath/Symbol of Domination Records) responded us couple of days after he received copy. He liked it and gave us pretty fair conditions. Also we heard good things about Satanath/Symbol of domination, couple of Serbian bands worked with Satanath/Symbol of domination in the past, so we gladly accepted his offer. On September 9th “Bež’te živi vraćaju se mrtvi” was officially released and it’s available via the band and label Symbol of domination.



4.How  long  did  it  take  the  band  to  write the  music  for the  new  release?Does  the  whole  band  work  on  writing the  music  or  does  one  member   usually  write  everything?

It’s little bit hard to tell, because some of these songs are 4-5 years old. We had many difficulties during the last 10 years: we stopped all activities in period between 2007-2009,  then lineup changes, financial problems etc. Last year, after our appearance in our hometown  Novi Sad at United metal festival, we realised that there is no point sitting and waiting something to happen, we realised it’s finally time to go into the studio and make a new record. 
Each band member contributes with it’s ideas, but for this record some old members also contributed. For example, our former guitarist Milan played guitar in song “Rusija”, main riffs in song “Slava gromu” were written by our former guitarist/vocalist Veljko.


5.Who  usually  takes  care  of  writing the  lyrics I  know  the  band  has  some  songs  based  on  WW.1 and  Serbian  history  when  did you  all  become  interested  in  writing  about these  subjects?

Knez Caslav is responsible for lyrics and we become interested in such themes since the beginning. Our main idea was to play patriotic black metal with lyrics that cover Serbian history and Slavic mythology. You know, mainstream media in Serbia and lot of assholes are trying to convince us that we should be ashamed of our history, our culture and tradition. We are doing the opposite.  For us it’s natural that band sings about history of it’s country. Yes we can write lyrics about Vikings but we don’t have any connection with them, we are not born in Sweden, we don’t live there. If bands sings about culture and history of it’s own country then we are learning from each other, learning about different cultures and nations. And, that’s a great thing. 
WWI had big impact on our country and consequences of that war we feel even today. One third of Serbian population was killed in that war. Stories we read about those people, our brave soldiers, their bravery and their struggles... This is something really hard to describe with simple words. Today’s generations we cannot put in the same sentence with those GREAT people.  


6.Besides   Serbian  history   and  World War  one  do  you  all  enjoy  studying  any  other   subjects  or  times  in  history?

Yes of course, we are interested in all historical periods. It’s always interesting to read about life in old days, problems people had in the past, battles, beliefs etc.


7.Does  Wolf's Hunger    get  to  play  "live"  very  often  or  do you  prefer  working in  the  studio? What  have  been  some  of the  bands  most  memorable  shows  over  the  years?

Playing live is our favourite activity. So far, we were playing only in our country, but now when we finally have the new record, we are more than ready to play abroad. Currently we are working on that.
One of our most memorable shows was our reunion gig on United Slavic Swords festival in 2009. We were playing with mighty Infernal War, Bleeding fist and Kozeljnik. Killer bands, lots of maniaks in the audience and tons of alcohol. That’s all what we remember from that night he he. Also we would like to mention our gigs with Vital remains(USA) in 2007. and Arkona(Russia) in 2010., on those shows we played as a supporting act.

8.Are  there any  upcoming  shows  or  tours the  readers  should  watch  out  for and  if yes  where will the  band  be  playing?

By the end of this year we will have promotional show in capital city, Belgrade, with our friends from Putrid blood and Blanquito cojones. Then we will focus on next year and try organize some tour in European countries. Playing abroad will be our main task in 2017.


9.In  your  opinion   what  is  the  best  and  worst  thing  about  the  underground  scene  today? And  what  does  underground  metal  mean  to  you  all?

Maybe we’ll sound like some hard-core band but for us underground scene is Friendship, Unity and Respect. All underground bands have same problems, no matter where are they from. We all spend our time, sacrifice part of our lives for metal music, we share the same passion for this music...It seems to us that these modern generations don’t have that passion, that would be probably the worst thing about underground scene today…

10.Wolf's Hunger    comes  out  of  the  Serbian  black,thrash  metal  scene  what  is  your  opinion  of  Serbia's  metal  scene?

Serbian scene is not so much known in the rest of the world but there are some killer acts worth of your attention. Bands like The stone(black metal) and Infest(death/thrash metal) are the best known and respected bands from our country. We would like to mention also Kolac(old school black metal), Redenik(necro/crossover/thrash metal), Putrid blood(thrash/hardcore metal), Sacramental blood(old school brutal death metal), Bombarder(speed metal gods since 1986.), Zloslut(black metal), Svartgren(black metal) etc. We probably forgot to mention some great acts, but it’s up to you check out bands from our scene.


11..Besides  bands  are their  any  good  labels  or  distro's  you  can recommend  to  the  readers?

First of all we would recommend our label Symbol of domination/Satanath. We easily settled all the things with them, we didn’t have any particular problem. Also we would like to recommend Serbian label Grom records which carries spirit of true UG metal. They have some killer bands  on their label. Our first album and split with Posmrtna liturgija were published on Grom records. 


12.Other  then  the  newest  cd   "Bez'te  Zivi  Vracaju Se Mrtvi"  does  the  band  have   any  past  releases   or  merchandise  available? If  yes  what  is  available  and  where  can the  readers  buy  it?

Beside “Bež’te živi vraćaju se mrtvi” we have 2 demos, 1 split release and 1 album. Our first demo “Thunders of Perun are back” was released in 2004. and we spread that demo to the media. Next demo titled “Zemlja moja u plamenu je” we released in 2005. Songs from that demo appeared on split with Posmrtna liturgija, released in 2005.via Grom records. First full length album “Osveta u krvi(Retaliation in blood)” was released in 2007., again via Grom records. Only couple of months after release date, that album was sold out. A lot of people are asking us about our old stuff but unfortunately we don’t have anything. Even we, members of the band don’t have physical copy of “Osveta u krvi” hehe. But we definitively have to do something about that. 
Currently we are promoting our second full length album “Bež’te živi vraćaju se mrtvi”, we have CD’s, T-Shirts, patches and badges. Anyone interested to get our new record or merch should contact us at: wolfshungerserbia [at] gmail.com


13.When  not  working  on  new  music  or  band  business  what do  you  all  enjoy  doing  in your  free time?

Drinking with our friends, visiting metal gigs and working regular jobs, those are our main activities. Knez Caslav is working railroad company, Dovla is working in construction company, Ivan is currently looking for a new job and Igor is on faculty of nuclear medicine.

Interview   with  Zachariah vocals and guitarist for  Kratornas  done  by   Patrick

1.Hails Zachariah please  introduce  yourself to  the  readers? At  what  age did you  get  into  metal  music and  who  were some  of the first  bands you  listened to?

I grew up in a household of “hippies” and started very young, literally. The song I can remember that really catches my attention was “One More for the Rodeo” (UFO). Things changed in the 90s, this is when I started writing to other maniacs overseas and I’m on my own.  

 

 

2.You  formed    Kratornas   back  in  1995   when did you get  the  idea  to  start this  band?Did  you  plan  to  work  as  a  one  man  band  or  did you  look for  other  members  when  first  starting out?

I formed Kratornas right after the real band (that I’m in; guitars/vocals) disbanded. No plans being in a ‘one man band’. I’ve been looking and jamming with people that I think fit but only left disappointed. I’ve done this while recording Demo 1995. However, after wasting my 1996 meddling with morons, I’ve finally decided to push thru all alone and released a very bad sounding demo in 1997. That’s the real start. 

 

3.As  mentioned   Kratornas   was  formed  in  1995  how  do  you  feel  the  bands  music  has  changed  over the  years and  who  were  some  bands  that  inspired   Kratornas   style  and sound?

The music remains the same since 1999. It was all like this since its inception. OK, maybe sounded different in Demo 1995 and Demo 1997 but the speed is always there and it’s not going anywhere. Bands were Bathory (all), Deicide (all), Unleashed (Where No Life Dwells), Terrorizer, Brutal Truth (ECDER), Vader (all), Sadus (Illusions) and Morbid Saint. 

 

 

4. Kratornas   is  getting  ready to  release  the newest  cd  "Devoured By Damnation" how  long  did  it  take  you to  write  the  music  for  the  new  release?

 

The songs were all inside my head and only waiting for the right location to be ignited. I also got like 4 C90 blank tapes filled with riffs. All these were written when I was younger – it’s sloppy but some were very aggressive. I’m only taking out what I can use.

5.Besides  "Devoured By Damnation"  are  of   Kratornas   past  releases  still  available  for the readers to buy? Besides  releases  do you  have  any  other  merchandise  available  if yes  what  is  available  and where can  the  readers  buy  it?

 

All the past releases were so bad that only wackos want to hear it – let alone spend money on it. There’s a website (www.kratornas.com), anyone can go there for information. However, if it’s not listed in there then it’s not there.

 

 

6.Zachariah you  have   been  a  part  of  the  underground  metal scene  for  many  years  how  do you  feel  the  scene  has changed  since the  early 90's?And  what  does  underground  metal  mean to you?

 

Underground to me is standing on your own, embracing the DIY culture and be creatively different. Indeed the scene has changed, now filled by anonymous smart asses but so what? I just moved on, adapt, do what I want to do and ignore the rest.

 

7.Zachariah I  believe  you  lived  in  the  Philippines  but  you  recently  relocated  to  Canada  what  made you  decide  to  move  to  Canada?

 

I’ve been living in Canada for 3 years now and haven’t ‘seen’ the Philippines since then. The decision is random since Canada is really not the first on the list. Before this, I was in England (like 6 months) but gaining residency in the UK is impossible so I’ve moved again. This is not about ‘working in a boat’ or ‘working abroad’ or shit like that. I’ve spent money myself, pick the country that I want to be in and live there literally. A lot of shit going on the past 6 years but it happened so fast that it was all a total blur now. The next thing I can remember is that I woke up on a plane (again!) heading to Vancouver”. It was all crazy experience that will not happen again. 

 

8.How  do  you  like  living  in  Canada ? Are  their  any  other  places  or  countries  that  you  would  like to  visit  someday?

Yes, Egypt (to see the Pyramids at Giza) – until now I’m still interested knowing all the ‘mysteries’ that lies behind it. Living in Canada is, like I’ve said, I can easily adapt to whatever environment that I am in so it’s not a big deal.

 

9.Zachariah you  also  added  a  drummer  to  Kratornas  when did you first  meet Guzzarin  and  how  is  it  going  working  with  him?

GB Guzzarin is just a name that will be use by ANY drummers hammering an album for Kratornas. I didn’t “meet” him by accident. I drop him an email, ask him about what he do and that’s it. 

 

 

10.Will you  try to  look  for  more  members to  make   Kratornas  a  full band  or  do you  prefer to  work  as  two  piece?

No, we’re good here. It would be useless to add another member just for recording purposes alone. 

 

11.You  handle  the  vocals  for the  band  when did you first  start  screaming  and  growling? Is their  anything  special  you do to  keep your  throat and voice  healthy?Who  are  some  of your  favorite vocalists?

 

I don’t think doing vocals (in this kind of music) has any formula or secret – you just gather all the hate and scream your lungs out. The key ingredient in keeping a voice healthy is common sense. This is not a string that you can replace, otherwise you’re fucked. I have no ‘favorites’ but any vocalist carrying an instrument has my respect.  

 

12.Other then  the  vocals  you  also  play  the  guitars  at  what  age did you  become interested  in  playing  the  guitars?Are you  self taught  or did you  take  lessons  when  first  starting  out?

I grew up ‘surrounded’ by guitarists, I simply learned guitar at a very young age. So yes, I’m self-taught. All they gave me was a chord book, LPs that I like for a reference, and a couple of Betamax/VHS where I can watch how it is being done. I envy these new generations of guitarist. Everything they want to know is a click away. You just can’t do that back then.

 

 

13.Besides  the  vocals  and  guitars  do  you  currently  play  any  other  instruments if yes  what  do you  play? Are  their  any  instruments  you  would  like  to  learn to play  someday?

I played bass guitar for all of the songs in this new album but of course, that is still a guitar. I have no interest learning other instruments, if you mean like drums. That is nothing but a distraction. 

 

14.Besides  working  in    Kratornas   do  you  currently  work  with  any  other  bands  or  solo projects?

No… Kratornas is enough. All energy and invocations were all in here but It’s funny you asked because lately I knew that there’s a lot of one man bands with 46 other bands and actually is the same person doing everything again - ALONE! I think that’s what you call “prolific” nowadays. How time flies, right…

Hello    Big Boss   how  are  things  going  with you  these  days?  Please  introduce  yourself  to  the  readers?

Big Boss: I´m great bastard and hate all:-))


Big Boss   you  formed  Root  back  in  1987  what  gave  you  the  idea  to  start  this  band?And  how  did you  come  up   with  Root  as  the  bands  name?

Big Boss: The band formed as the recession but we realized a bit later that we like it. We found that right title and the band is here. The title was taken from the sentence Root of all Evil. 



Besides  the  upcoming  release  of  "Kargeras--Return From  Oblivion does  the  band   have   any  past  releases  or  merchandise  available? I  know  Root  has  had  a  tremendous   career  but  do you  have  a  personal  favorite  Root  song  and  release?

Igor: We offer both all ROOT´s older releases and shirts. Check out our store at www.rootan.net

Big Boss: All our songs are our children. Would you love some of your children more than another one? I don´t think so. That´s it. 


Root is  getting  ready to  release  their  new  release   "Kargeras--Return From  Oblivion"  how  long  did  it  take  to  write  the  music  for  the  new release?


Big Boss: I wrote both albums in 1993-1994 but the right time to make the music for the second part has come now as far. 


I  believe  the  lyrics on the new  release   are  a  concept  What  gave you  the  idea  to  do  a  concept  release? And  what  is the  concept  based  on?

Big Boss:  It is a direct continuation of “Kärgeräs” album from 1996. My own closure of the story which I wrote back in the nineties. I promised once that one day I would finish that story and so I am keeping this promise. Many fans have been waiting for it since the first “Kärgeräs” album. Now they can finally get it and can enjoy another part of this story. I’m looking forward to listeners’ opinions about this new masterpiece. The album is simultaneously a gift directly to “Kärgeräs” album fans. It´s very important because there are many fans of ROOT who prefer just some of our albums. And “Kärgeräs” is the special one.


Root  has  played  many  shows  over  the  years   what  have  been  some  of your  most   memorable  shows? And  who  were  some  bands  you  had the  pleasure of  sharing  the  stage  with?

Big Boss: All shows are great and all bands too. I don´t prefer anything, only politics do this:-)

Igor: Most of gigs out of Czech Republic are more special because we don´t play in other countries so often. Really special trip was Calgary in Canada some years ago. Still remember also No Mercy Festivals European tour with Moonspell, Behemoth and Napalm Death in 2007. 


Are  their   any  tours  or  shows  planned  for the  rest  of  2016  or the  beginning  of  2017? What  are   some  countries  Root  will  be  playing?Any  idea  who  are  the  bands  you  will be  playing  with?

Big Boss: Maybe that very the first US show ever. ROOT is confirmed for Maryland Deathfest 2017. This is really special one. Otherwise we still play live over here in Czech Republic mostly, sometimes in Germany, Sweden, Lithuania, Belgium, Poland, France, Canada, Serbia, England...etc.
And we played with Moonspell, Anathema, Apocalyptica, Mercyful Fate, King Diamond, Nifelheim, Pungent Stench, Behemoth, Destroyer 666, Enslaved, Napalm Death, Impaled Nazarene,  Satanic Warmaster, Amon Amarth, Sodom and more and more...


Root   comes  out  of  the  Czech Republic's  metal  scene  what  is  your  opinion  of   the  Czech Republic's  scene  over  the  years?

Big Boss: There still appear new good bands and friends, some older bands play on – ROOT for example. I don´t prefer any band at all. Many old bands split up, of course. 



Who   are  some  of your  all-time  favorite  band? Are  their  any  new  bands  or  projects  you  feel  the  readers  should  check  out  soon?
Igor: Maybe you guys should check out our projects;-) 


Besides   bands  are  their  any  good  labels  or  distro's  you  can  recommend  to  the  readers?

Igor: Agonia Records actually. Quite a good business partner;-)

In  your  opinion  what  does  Underground  metal  mean  to  you?

Igor: Don´t like this word at all. I understand why some people use it within the musical business but this word covers also some bad things. Many people and bands just hide behind this word. I think the real underground scene disappeared with the internet. 


Are  you  or  any  of the  members  of  Root  currently  working  in  any  other  bands  or   projects?

Igor: We´re still working on other projects. Big Boss will record his another solo album next year and other ROOT members help him with this a bit too. I still work on some new songs, as well as other guitarists. 


Big Boss  you  take  care  of  the  vocals  at  what  age did you  become  interested  in  singing  and screaming? Is  their  anything  special  that you  do  to  keep  your  throat  and  voice  healthy?

Big Boss: I do not work on my voice at all. I smoke and drink  I do not care about the voice. It is a gift from Satan, okay?

Who   are  some  of your  favorite  vocalists? Besides  handling  the  vocals  do you   play  any  other  instruments?

Big Boss: My favorite is – Janis Joplin, Chris Farlowe, King Diamond, Denis Shaforostof....I play a little on keyboards, drums and bass....



When  not   working  on  new  music  or  band  business   what  do  you  enjoy  doing  in your  free time?

 Big Boss: He he he....you do´t want to know...hehehe

Balfor--Black Serpent  Rising  cd  {Drakkar  Prod.}
Ukraine's  Barbaric  black  metal  band  Balfor   return  with  their  newest   cd Black Serpent  Rising  featuring  eight  tracks  of  destructive  black metal.The  band does  have some  elements  of  death metal  and even  a  few  somber  and  slower  sections before  going  all  crazed  and  fast paced.The  guitarist  knows  how  to  play  well executed  guitar  chords  that  are played  in the  fast,destructive  pace  but their  are  some  well written  and  performed  mid paced sections.The  drums  are done  in  the  fast  barbaric  blasting  drums  but the drummer does  slow to  a  more somber and slower  pace  in  a  few of the  songs  before  going  back to  the hyper fast  drum  style.The  vocalist   are  done  with  both raw,raspy black metal shrieks  and  some  death  metal  growls  used  in  a  few  songs.If  you  are  familiar  with  Balfor's  past  releases  then you  know  what to  expect  but  if you  are  a  new  fan  then  imagine  well  written  and  played  barbaric  black metal  that  has  both  plenty  of  vicious  and  some slower,melodic black metal sections.

Interview  with  Anders Guitarist  and  music  writer  of   Omnizide   done  by  Patrick



1.Hails  Anders please  introduce  yourself  to  the  readers  and  when  did you  become  interested  in  playing  and  writing  music.


Hails! 
Well, I play the guitar in Omnizide and some other bands as well, not much more to say about myself.
I always listened to music. First Twisted Sister and that sort of stuff, then bands like Metallica, and later on the Earache bands (Bolt Thrower, Morbid Angel, Carcass etc).
Like many other in my generation I first discovered black metal when I read newspaper articles about the churchburnings and murders in the Norwegian Scene. As a teenager I though it was really fascinating and instantly got hooked on band like Darkthrone and Burzum.  After a while me and Mikael thought we should try to create something similar ourselves and that's when I picked up the guitar and started to write music (well at least tried anyway)



2.When  did you  first  meet  Mikael  and  what  gave you  two  the idea  to  start   Omnizide ?How  did you  come  up  with the  name   Omnizide  for  the  band  and   does  it  have  a special  meaning?


Me and Mikael grew up as neighbors but we didn't really start hanging out until we realized we shared a mutual interest for extreme metal. 
It was actually Mikael who got me to play the guitar in the first place. We were both really into Scandinavian black metal and, like I said, we felt that we wanted to create something similar ourselves.
Mikael came up with the name Omnicie (but we decided to spell it with a "Z") 
It means the destruction of all life, total death. It suits our lyrical themes and our music very well.


3.Anders  you  and  Mikael   formed  the  band  in  1995   how  do you  feel  the  bands  music  has  changed  since the  beginning  of the band  until  present day?

When we started none of us really knew how to play our instruments so the music was really simple an minimalistic. And very influenced by Darkthrone and that style of Scandinavian  black metal. 
Back then we were much better at drawing cool logos band taking band photos than actually writing and recording music so the early days just ended up in a couple of rehearsal tapes we mostly kept to ourselves.
Through the years we have discovered and got influenced by other types of extreme music (crust for example) and incorporated more death metal elements. 



4. Omnizide  is  getting  ready to  release  the  bands  second  full length  "NekroRegime" through Carnal Rec.  And  Daemon Worship Rec.  How  did you  come  in  contact  with  these  two  great  labels?

Björn, who runs Carnal Records, is an old friend of ours. So when we decided to reform the band it seemed natural to ask him if he was interested in releasing it. He is also  very easy to work with and doesn't live too far from here.  
We came in contact with Daemonic Worship through Carnal. They have collaborated on other releases.


5.Anders  you  take  care  of  writing the  music  for the  band  how  long  did it take  to  write the  music  for the  new  release  "NekroRegime"?

We started writing the songs right after the Nekromantik EP was recorded. The song "Shockwaves"as actually finished before that. I guess it took about a year or so to write all the songs.
We actually never intended it to become an album, we aimed to record another EP, but then we realized we had nearly enough new songs to make an album, and then the idea of a second album were born. 


6.Who usually  writes  the  lyrics  for  the  music  and  what  are  some  of the  subjects  you  all  write  about  on  the  new  release?

Me and Gaddur(drums) usually write most of the lyrics, but Nox contributes with some lyrics as well. And the lyrics for the first song (Himmelstrasse) were written by B-Force.
The lyrics of this album deals with things such as Necrophilia, Doom, Murder and WWII.  And some other delicate subject as well. 


7.Besides  the  new  CD   "NekroRegime"  does  the  band  have  any  past  releases  or  merchandise  available  for the  readers if  yes  what  is  available  and  where  can the  readers  buy  it?

I think some of our previous releases is still available through various distros and record shops. Easiest for the readers would probably be to contact Carnal Records directly, they may have some stuff left. 
When it comes to merchandise we have handled that part for ourselves so far. We usually print a very limited amount of shirts (30-50 ex or so) each time so they are quickly sold out.  However, we we probably make some Nekroregime"-related shirts in the not so distant future.



8.Omnizide comes  out  of  the  Swedish  blackend death metal  scene  what is your  opinion  of  the  Swedish  black and death  metal scene  over  the  years?

I think it started out strong in the late 80's and early 90's. Especially the death metal scene. But then it got really boring and  I really grew tired of black metal and especially the sound of the late 90's.
However things have improved a lot. I think the Swedish scene of today is probably as strong as ever with lots of great new bands. And some older bands like Marduk still releases real quality stuff (I think Frontschwein is there best record so far).


9.Who  are  some  of your  all-time  favorite  Swedish  bands  and  are  their  any  new  bands you  feel  the readers  should  check  out  soon?

Bathory (of course) is one of my favorite Swedish bands, as well bands as Nifelheim, Repugnant and Kaamos and such.
People should check out our labelmates in WAN, there really good. And the latest Kill album is really worth a listen.


10.Anders  in  your  opinion  what  does  black  metal  mean  to you?

It's hard to explain.
 Of course the lyrics has to deal with the  "right" subjects, but to me it was always the music that was most interesting. The rawness and the feeling in black metal. It was a whole new  experience compared to the death metal stuff I had listened to before and I was totally engulfed by  black metal back in the 90's. 



11.Besides  writing  and  playing  music  what  do you  like to  do in your  free  time?

Since I work full-time and have a bunch of kids  I don't have that much free time. But I do enjoy fishing.
However music ris my main interest. I'm an eager record collector, so listening to and discovering new bands is how I spend most of my free time.


12.Thank  you  Anders  for  taking  the  time  to  fill  this   interview  out  do you   have  any  final  words  for the  readers?

1. Hello, Max, please introduce yourself to the readers and tell us at what age did you become interested in playing and writing music?

Hi there, folks! Greets from Ukraine! Name’s Max, I’m musician from Kharkov, Ukraine and the mastermind of Atmospheric Doom/Death band Sorrowful Land. As I recall I was like 14 when I realized that I want to become a musician. My mom was the one who presented me an acoustic guitar and I started to learn how to use that thing J Firstly it was more pretending then real playing of course. I ran a Metallica CD and just hit the strings like a James Hetfield wannabe. Oh, God, it was awful and funny!

2. What were the first instruments you learned to play? Are there any instruments that you would like to learn one day?

Obviously – guitar. An acoustic one. I took some lessons, but then I abandoned these classes ‘cause they were way too boring and if you wanna play metal – attending musical classes ain’t the option.

 
3. Max, you formed Sorrowful Land in 2014, when did you get the idea to start this band and who are some of Sorrowful Land's influences?

The funny thing is that it was not totally my idea! Originally it was a duo. The story goes like: in April of 2014 I received a PM on my Facebook page from a dude I knew for quite some time. And that fellow was Peter Laustsen from a Swedish Melodic Doom band WHEN NOTHING REMAINS. How cool is that? It was he who offered me to create a collaboration project in more darker and heavier style then our main bands played. We both enjoyed Funeral Doom so we decided to give it a try. And then I came with the name “SORROWFUL LAND” and so on. But now it’s totally my solo-project. As for the influences I can name such bands as Doom:VS, Colosseum, Evoken, even a bit of Esoteric. 

4. Sorrowful Land is signed to the great doom label - Solitude Prods. How did you come in contact with this label?

I knew this label for 5 years so far. I’ve been with them since they signed my main Gothic/Doom band – EDENIAN. All Edenian albums were released through the Solitude Productions. So it was not a question for me where to release a debut Sorrowful Land album. And it turned out great!


5. The band released the debut CD "Of Ruins…" How long did it take you to write the music for these songs? Max, you also write the lyrics for the band, what are some topics you wrote about on the debut album?

 Yes, the album was released on November, 7th. It took me two years to complete the album. Main themes for the lyrics are my own feelings, experiences, soul-searching, some dark thoughts I carry within. Also I often use a classic English poetry of XIX century, adopting it for a song. You can find a lot of gems in old poetry.  


6. Max, you handle everything for Sorrowful Land, when you started this band did you plan on working as “one-man band” or would you like to find other musicians to work with?

 Let’s set it clear. When Sorrowful Land appeared – it was a duo (me & Peter Laustsen) and it meant to be this way. But time flows and things change. Since the beginning of 2016 Sorrowful Land came under my control. And it’s gonna be like this ‘cause I’m a “control freak” you know? If something goes wrong – I’m the one to blame, haha


7. If you had the opportunity to work with any musicians - who are some musicians you would like to work with? And what do you feel is the best and worst thing about being the sole member of the band?

Never thought ‘bout that yet. Time will show. Maybe some guest musicians will appear on the next album, who knows. As for the being a sole member of the band – the main thing here is that you’re in charge and the great responsibility is on your shoulders only. I’m ok with that. But sometimes I feel so lazy to record bass parts or compose some cool solo, so I go like “Oh, I need someone else to help me out with that shit”. I think I may call it a “worst thing”.

8. Besides the debut CD "Of Ruins…" does the band have any other merchandise available for the readers at this time? If yes, what is available and where can the readers buy it?

9. Max, you live in Ukraine, what is your opinion of the Ukrainian death/doom scene? And who are some of your all-time favorite bands from Ukraine?

We have some pretty decent doom bands here in Ukraine. To name some: Endlesshade, Luna, Embrace of Silence, Eternal Void, WinterMor, Mental Torment. But the funny thing is that Ukrainian bands I like don’t play doom. I enjoy a power-metal band Morton, I think they’re doing great. 


10. Besides atmospheric death/doom do you listen to any other forms of doom or music in general if yes, who are some of your most favorite bands and artists?

 Indeed, I listen to almost every genre of rock and metal music: heavy-metal, thrash, death, melodic-death, black, gothic, progressive, power, etc. As for the favorite bands – TONS OF THEM!! To name a few: Metallica, Slayer, Kataklysm, Amon Amarth, Iced Earth, Kamelot,  Nickelback, Trivium, Breaking Benjamin, Lacuna Coil, Epica, Draconian, and the list is almost endless 


11. Besides working and playing in Sorrowful Land do you currently work with any other bands or projects if yes, please tell the readers a little about them?

As said before I have a female-fronted Gothic/Doom band called EDENIAN. It gathered in 2010, we released two full-length albums, EP and a couple of singles. One can easily find us on Internet and give it a listen ;)


12. Max, besides playing music you also recently started a webzine called “Shelter Of Doom”, when did you get the idea to start this webzine? Besides Atmospheric Doom do you want to cover and promote any other forms of doom or music in general? So far there are only reviews up, do you have any interest to do some interviews soon or is this a ‘zine only for reviews?

It’s true. Guys from Solitude Prods asked me if I want to write reviews for their upcoming releases and I came with idea of creating my own blog where I can share my humble opinion not only on Solitude Prods releases but every album or EP or even single that I like (or not). So Shelter Of Doom was created. And yes – it’s dedicated to doom-metal only. Also I’m having a thought about adding “Interviews” button. 



13. Do you have anyone helping with the webzine or do you prefer to work alone? If any bands or labels are reading this - where can they send their music to be reviewed?

I prefer to do things myself ‘cause review is very subjective form of expression your own thought. And if you mean help with blog construction, then I must say it’s an easy thing to do, nothing special. Interview  with  Fredrik   Larsson   bassist  of   Hammerfall  done  by  Patrick


1.Hello  please  introduce yourself  to  the  readers? How  are  things  going  in  Sweden  these days?

Hi! Fredrik Larsson here, bass player of HammerFall! Things are getting a bit busy now with rehearsals coming up and still a lot of promotion and preparing to do. And of course the usual stress with everything around Christmas. Other than that, it's all good! 

 

2.Hammerfall  is  getting  ready to  release  their  new  cd  "Built To Last"  through  Napalm  Rec. how  did  the  band  come  in  contact  with  this  great  label?

 

Well, we were kind of looking around for a new label since our contract was fulfilled and we wanted to do things in a different way instead of just doing it the same way we've always done. We had a casual meeting with Thomas ad he made some impressions on us so we started to investigate our options and we were even more convinced that this was the way to go. It feels like it's still I'm the beginning but so far we have a great cooperation. 

 

 

3.How  long  did  it  take  the  band to  write the  music for the  new  release?Does  the  whole  band  work  on  the  music  or does  one  member  usually  write  everything?

It's mostly Oscar and Joacim that writes and I think Oscar started pretty much right after the last tour ended. There is a lot of planning to do and it's hard to know if you will write the perfect album in three months or in twelve so it's best to start early. I know he had a hard time getting the inspiration he needed so it took some time but he is also very structured and sat down a couple of hours every day just to get something down and in the end he'll get there. It's not a democracy in that case but it's always been Oscar and Joacim that had the vision for HammerFall and they have done a great job so far!

4.Are  their  any  shows  or  tours  planned  in  support  of    "Built To Last"   if  yes  where  are  some  countries  the  band  will  be  playing?Any  idea  who  are  some  bands  Hammerfall  will  be  touring  with?

We have a hectic period beginning early January next year. We start off with a European tour together with Gloryhammer and Lancer and then we have a South America tour coming up and later on a North America tour with Delain. And that before the festival summer starts off. We haven't planned next fall yet but I'm sure we're gonna squeeze in a couple of more shows. 

5.What  have  been  some  of  the  bands  most  memorable  shows  over  the  years?

For me personally I would say the Ines we've done in Scandinavium in Gothenburg. That's where I saw most of my childhood idols, such as Accept, Iron Maiden, Anthrax and many many more. To be on the same stage is a fantastic feeling and something I wouldn't even dream of when I was on the other side of the fence as a kid. And I must mention a free concert we did in Gothenburg as well, that was truly amazing. There were people everywhere. We played on top of our biggest avenue and it was so crowded you couldn't see the end. Fantastic. 

 

6.Are  their  any plans to  mane  a  video  for  the  new  release? If you  had  your  choice  what  song  would  you  like  to  see  made  into  a  video?

Well, we did a lyrical video to ‘The Sacred Vow’ and a proper video to ‘Hammer High’ which obviously are the singles. We usually just do one video per album so consider this a bonus. 

7.Hammerfall  also  plays  a lot  of  cover  songs  of  various  bands and  in  2008  did  a  cover  album "Masterpieces" what  have  been  some  of your  personal  favorite  cover songs  to do? Are  their  any  cover  songs  that  the  band  has  not  yet  done   that  you  would  like to  record  someday?

Since I didn't play on most of the cover versions I have to say ‘Youth Gone Wild’. A song that I really liked when I was younger and still think is a killer song! I can't say that I think about cover songs, it's just a fun thing to do. Don't hold your breath for more covers though. 

8.Hammerfall  formed  in  the  mid  90's  what  has  kept  the  band  going  strong  after  all  these  years?

I think we've always done things by heart and not followed trends. We play Heavy Metal the way we think it should be and we still love this. If we wouldn't I think it would have shown and people would notice. 

 

9.The  band  comes  out  of  Sweden's  heavy  metal   scene  besides  heavy  metal  do  any  of  the  members  listen/like  any  other forms  of  metal  and  music  in  general?

Yes, of course. We all like a lot of different music. I listen to a lot heavier music, thrash and groove or whatever the genres are called these days. I used to listen and play a lot of death metal as well but not so much right now. I know Oscar still listens to some old school death metal and we use to talk about it from time to time. We played together in Crystal Age, a death metal band, before I joined HammerFall. 

10.When  not   working  on  new  music  or  band  business  what  do  you  all  enjoy  doing  in  your  free  time?

Right now, HammerFall is taking most of our time, but Joacim is really into Whiskey and Champagne. Oscar is a big MMA supporter and he also collects and play a lot of video games. Pontus works as a Front of House engineer and records a lot of bands both live and in his studio. David is into beers and peppers, he always have a new brand to speak about. And I try to get as much family time as I can before the tours start. I got two sons that really wants my attention all the time.

 

 

11.Thank  you  for  taking  the  time  to  fill  this  interview  out  do  you  have  any  final  comments  for  the  readers?

Thank you very much! I hope I'll catch you all out on tour somewhere or on a festival nearby. Bring some friends and make the party even bigger!
