1. Hello please introduce yourselves to the readers?
Hey! We're NecroticGoreBeast, a Slamming Brutal Death Metal band from Quebec City, Canada!
2. When did you first discover Death Metal and Metal in general? And was it long before you discovered the underground metal scene?
Our discovery of Death Metal and Metal goes way back to the early 90's and early 2000's. People at school who were into metal were more into Power Metal or bands like Metallica, Megadeth, which lacked aggression to our taste. We eventually discovered bands like Napalm Death, Cannibal Corpse, Pantera. For the underground scene it was just a logical following for us discovering Metal, listening to some underground metal radio on the internet or sharing some cassettes or CDs with our friends, discovering bands like Marduk, Benighted and Decapitated, Dark Tranquillity, Dimmu Borgir. We've always been curious to find out new music, so it didn't take long to dig deeper.
3. Who were the first bands and artists you discovered? Who are some of the current bands that have caught your attention?
Our first metal influences include the likes of Cradle of Filth, Cannibal Corpse, Napalm Death, Dying Fetus, Deicide, Dimmu Borgir, Dark Tranquillity, At the Gates, a lot of Swedish Melodeath bands, just to name a few. In recent years, there's a lot of bands who have caught our attention and influenced us in what is the sound of NecroticGoreBeast: Vulvodynia, Cephalotripsy, Abominable Putridity, Analepsy, Rendered Helpless, Kraanium, Gorepot, Extermination Dismemberment, Pathology, just to name a few. As for current bands, some of us have been on an OSDM kick lately, so aside from the early 90's classics, we're really digging Galvanizer, Mortuous, Occulsed, Fulci, Disembodiment, Sedimentum, Outre-Tombe, Cerebral Rot, Witch Vomit.
4. NecroticGoreBeast was started in 2017. What gave you all the idea to start this band? What is the current line up of the band?
It started with John and Alex who were playing together in The Outborn. Since both of them were very fond of the Brutal genre, they decided to form the band together and pick some musicians along. It started as a studio project, just to get a couple of songs online and see where it could get us, here we are, 4 years later with 2 albums! Current lineup is JP Bouchard (drums), Alexandre Brochu (bass), Michael Chamberland (guitar) and John Mayer (vocals).
5. Who would you say are the bands biggest influences and have they remained the same over the years? For the readers who have never heard NecroticGoreBeast, how would you best describe the bands musicial style?
Since NecroticGoreBeast if fairly a recent band, our original influences when we started the band were Cryptopsy, Vulvodynia, Beneath the Massacre, Devourment and Cannibal Corpse. At first Mike was not in the band, he joined us in September 2017 and brought the slam influences with him. The demo was more Tech-oriented, the riffs and structures were a bit more complex to play. With the addition of Mike, we slowly went to a more slam oriented music and it confirmed our idea to be a live band instead of a studio band.
6. Human Deviance Galore is the bands second full length release. How long did it take the band to write the music for the new release? How long does it usually take the band to complete one song?
Even before the release of our first album in October 2019, we were already in the writing process of the new album. It usually takes a week or two to write the structure of a song (guitars, figuring out tempos). When everything is written, we make the demo tracks for the guitars and JP writes the drum parts. So it’ll basically take us 4-5 months to write a whole album (10+ songs).
7. Besides the upcoming Human Deviance Galore, is the debut release still available for the readers to purchase? Besides physical releases, does the band have any other merchandise currently available? If yes, what is available and where can the readers purchase it?
Sure! Our first album is available on Comatose Music’s website and Bandcamp! You can also also buy some super cool merch on All Over Brutality’s website, going from hoodies to bed sheets to leggings!
8. Before the pandemic shut everything down, did the band play very many live shows or does the band prefer working in the studio? What have been some of the bands most memorable shows over the years? Who are some bands you have shared the stage with?
Before the pandemic, with the release of our first album, we were definitely looking for live shows and get things started, but things have unfortunately been postponed for us and a ton of other bands too. Our first show in July 2019 at the Festival d’Été de Québec (FEQ) was very special, it was a couple of months before the release of our album. It was very special and the crowd was on fire! We've been able to share the stage with Pathology in Montreal. It was really cool to see them live and have a chat with them, super sweet guys and they really liked our set too!
9. NecroticGoreBeast comes out of Canada's Brutal Death Metal scene; what is your opinion of the scene in Canada over the years?
Canada (especially Québec) has one of the best Death Metal scenes in the world, though it's better renowned for its Tech Death than BDM.
10. Who are your all-time favorite bands coming out of Canada? Are there any new bands you feel the readers should check out soon?
Cryptopsy, Neuraxis, Despised Icon, Beneath the Massacre, First Fragment, Augury, Archspire, Killitorous. People should definitely check out (if they haven't already) Outre-Tombe, Disembodiment, Sedimentum, Présages, Hatalom, Chthe'ilist, Observants, Dépérir, The Flaying, Deviant Process.
11. When not working on new music or band business what do you like to do in your free time?
Except for our day job, we definitely enjoy different things like spending time with our families, going out with friends, drinking some good beer, hopefully going to see some live shows very soon.
12. Besides working in NecroticGoreBeast, do any of the members currently work other bands or solo projects? If yes please tell the readers a little about them?
John, Alex and, as of recently, JP all play in The Outborn, a Tech/Prog Death Metal band from Quebec City. The band was formed in 2008, John and Alex joined subsequently in 2014-2015 and JP recently joined the band on drums. The band has an EP (2012) and an album (Seven, 2017) and has played with The Faceless, Benighted, Rings of Saturn, Unearth, Protest the Hero, Black Crown Initiate and a ton more! Second album will come out next year, so make sure to check us out! Mike is the founder of Soiled by Blood (Brutal Death Metal) and has been playing with the band since 2008 (he was only 12 years old!). The band has 2 full lengths, Serving the Bowels of God (2014) and Erit Sanguis (2019). For any fans of Brutal Death Metal music, you definitely have to check them out! JP has been playing in a lot of bands over the years (Necronomicon, Bookakee, Morningless, Martlet and recently, The Outborn). He's a pretty versatile drummer who can blast at 300bpm but can also create some very interesting grooves (i.e Martlet is an instrumental ambient post-metal band). JP is a very committed drummer, extremely dedicated to his art and very open to several styles, helping him to develop a lot of versatility.
