Interview with Postmortal done by Patrick
1.Hello how are you doing this week? Please introduce yourself to the readers?
Helo, here Michał, guitarist of Postmortal. I'm doing great this week, thanks. I played concert with my other band “Rites of Daath” in Wrocław this Friday (18.05.2018). It was great show!
2. Postmortal was started in 2016 what gave you all the idea to start this band? And how did you all choose Postmortal as the name of the band?
I remember the idea which appeared in our minds during 20th edition of Brutal Assault festival in Czech Republic in 2015. Almost all Postmortal first line-up were there but it changed just after this event . For a long time doom metal was my favorite metal subgenre. Moreover, we decided that more originally we will be playing funeral doom than create another black or death metal group. The band’s name was suggested by our first bassist “Sludge” (greetings for Sludge from this place) and other members agreed with this idea.
3.What is the current line up of the band? And who would you say are Postmortal's biggest influences?
Current line-up are: Me – guitar, Kamil – guitar, Dawid – vocal and Paweł – bass. Unfortunately, we don’t have a drummer at this moment. Answering for myself, I can say that main influences come from great doom bands like Thergothon, The funeral orchestra, Ahab, Evoken, Tyranny, My dying Bride, Paradise Lost and many others . But I also derive inspiration from other metal subgenres like post, death and black metal and even not from metal music.
4.Soil is the bands debut EP. which is being released through Solitude Prod. how did the band come in contact with this label?
When you play funeral doom it's really hard to find anybody who would be willing to release your stuff. There is no label that specializes in doom metal in Poland. Fortunately, in Russia there is Solitude Productions. I knew this label before and I like bands they released. I sent them our material, they like it, offered interesting conditions and we started to cooperate.
5.How long did it take the band to write the music for the debut release?
I really don’t know how long it took. Our music was creating systematically from the beginning. After some time we decided to chose 3 songs for Ep.
6.I believe Soil is a digital release are their plans to release the debut on a physical format soon? If yes when will it be availible?
Yes, we already released Soil on Cds by ourself. There is only 50 copies of it. Cds are available since 14th May and you can buy them through official store: http://postmortalofficial.8merch.com
7Does Postmortal play live very often or do you prefer working in the studio?Who are some bands you have shared the stage with?
We played 2 gigs by now, and we really like them. We want to play more but we can’t do it without full line up. Regardless of that fact new records wouldn't delay.
8.Are their any shows or tours planned in support of the Soil release? If yes where will the band be playing and who are some bands you will be sharing the stage with?
As I mentioned above, we aren’t able to play concerts now. However, I hope we’ll find new drummer soon and we'll play some gigs.
9.Has the band ever thought of making a music video for any of the songs? If you had the opportunity which song would you like to see made into a video?
We haven’t thought about music video yet. Maybe in the future when new material will be released. But If I had to choose a song from Soil I would vote for Nighttime Serenity.
10. Postmortal comes out of Poland's death, doom metal scene what are your thoughts on the doom metal scene in Poland?
Doom metal scene in Poland still exist but it isn’t as strong as in 90s, when this genre has many great representatives. Anyway, we still have couple of very good bands.
11.Who are your all-time favorite polish death, doom bands and are their any new bands you feel the readers should check out soon?
think my favorite polish death doom band is Medebor, I like all their albums, especially “Phantasma”. I also like Sirrah which is unfortunately inactive right now and Mordor which recently released new album “Darkness” after 21 years of break! From among new bands I can recommend Dath has Spoken which plays really good doom metal with great riffs and many melancholic melodies, and Above Aurora which is more black than doom, but it’s great music also.
12.When not working on new music or band business what do you enjoy doing in your free time?
Watching Youtube, reading books, meet with friends, some sport, nothing special.
13.Besides playing in Postmortal do you or any of the members currently play in any other bands or solo projects?
Yes, me and other guitarist Kamil play in Rites of Daath, furthermore I also play in Schaderian.
14.Thank you for taking the time to fill this interview out do you have any final words for the readers?
Thank you! Stay doom!
