1.Hello please introduce yourselves to the readers?
Dawid: Hello. We are Postmortal, a funeral doom metal band from Kraków in Poland.
Michał: Hello all.
2.When did you first discover death and funeral doom metal music and what is it about this genre of music that you love so much?
Dawid: For me the first touch with death metal was in 2007. I remember I was sitting in an internet cafe and checking different music videos on some site. That day I’ve found Vader - This is the War music video and I fell completely in love with that band. Back then everything had to be heavier and faster for me. Around 2009-2010 I’ve found Draconian. This band led me to more slower riffs. The turning point was 2012 when I went to the Ahab concert on Brutal Assault. I was absolutely mesmerized by the slow and heavy riffs and crushing vocals. I love the feeling doom metal music gives me. The tranquility and melancholy. It makes me calm.
Michał: I first discovered funeral doom music around 2014 or 2015. I remember my friend Sludge who later became the band's first bassist showed me Thergothon. I've always been more drawn to heavy and slow riffs than fast and aggressive ones, so when I heard extreme slow and heavy playing I immediately decided that this was something for me.
3.Who were the first bands that caught your attention?Who are some of the current bands that you have been listening to lately?
Dawid: As described earlier - Ahab, Draconian, Type o Negative. Currently I have a mix of different genres on my playlist - Zeal&Ardor, Bloodywood, Heilung, Vartra, Born of Osiris, Ahab, Type o Negative, Therion and Draconian. Could say that’s my main focus nowadays.
Michał: First of all, the aforementioned Thergothon, The Funeral Orchestra, Ahab, Tyranny, Evoken. I don't listen to much funeral doom these days, but Pantheist caught my attention recently. I recently watched their concert from 2023 at Organic Doom vol. 1, a wonderful, mystical performance.
4. Postmortal was started in 2016 when did you first decide to start this band? Are you satisfied with how things have gone with the band over the years? How did you choose Postmortal as the name of the band?
Michał: the idea which appeared in our minds during 20th edition of Brutal Assault festival in Czech Republic in 2015. Almost all Postmortal first line-up were there. Yes, I am but I feel a certain dissatisfaction. I regret a bit that I relied more on other bands I played in in the past, which was reflected at the expense of Postmortal. The band’s name was suggested by our first bassist “Sludge” .
5.Who would you say are the bands biggest influences? For the readers who have never heard Postmortal how would you best describe the bands music?
Michał: First of all, I would list here the bands from Question 3 when it comes to funeral doom. But I also drew inspiration from Black and Death metal when writing Postmortal music
6.Profundis Omnis is the debut full-length how long did it take to write the music for the debut? How long does it usually take to complete one song?
Michał: The material for this album was created so long ago that it's hard for me to say. From what I remember, the material was created in no more than 2 years. In fact, half of the material for Profundis Omnis was already ready during the recording of our EP Soil. A single song can be created very quickly if all the components of it stick together. It can take even a week. However, if something doesn't quite fit and you start to rework the song in every possible way, sometimes a year is not enough time for one song.
7.Where do you draw inspiration for the lyrics?Which usually comes first the music or the lyrics?
Dawid: Everything started with music. When I joined the band in 2018, most of the songs were ready, they just needed lyrics. On the other hand I wrote them independently and afterwards tried to fit them into music. I’m mostly a happy person so my lyrics aren’t inspired by my own experiences. I treat my lyrics as a novel, I think of a story and try to become the main character. Then I write what he might feel and think.
8.Besides the debut Profundis Omnis is their any other releases or merchandise currently availible for the readers to purchase? If yes what is availible and where can the readers purchase it?
Dawid: We have released an EP called “Soil”. There are still a few copies available to buy on our bandcam. Any future releases and merch will be available there
MIchał: However there is the possibility to buy album in digital form all the time.
9.I believe Postmortal is a two man band. Would you like to add new musicians to perform some live shows soon?Or do you prefer to work as a duo?
Dawid: We are gathering musicians needed for live shows. It’s very hard in this genre but we are successful. We already had our first live rehearsal. I guess we will be ready for autumn to give some live shows.
Michał: I hope we will play shows in future, I love to play live..
10.What is your opinion of the doom and funeral doom scene in Poland over the years?
The Polish doom metal scene is mainly bands playing stoner doom, which is probably the most popular of all doom subgenres lately. We have very strong representatives here, such as Dopelord, Belzebong, Weedpecker, Spaceslug. There used to be more bands playing more traditional doom or gothic doom. Most of them splitted up or are still deep in the underground.
11.Who are your all-time favorite Polish bands? Are their any new bands you could recomend to the readers?
Dawid: Vader, Hunter, Decapitated, Miyasis, Cień, Mgła.
Michał: From what I've been listening to lately: Obscure Sphinx, Mag, Wij, Sunnata. From black metal, which is a lot here: Mgła, Mord'A'Stigmata, Totenmesse, Medico Peste, Jarun, Above Aurora, Gorycz. Bands that I don't necessarily listen to every day now but I have a lot of sentiment for: Medebor, Hunter, Acid Drinkers, Sirrah
